Re: Tesla Model 3

Coal will be around for a long time yet. Natural gas is picking up. PV and wind are growing at huge percentages, Unfortunately, a huge increase in a tiny number is still tiny. https://www.resilience.org/stories/2018-06-21/in-depth-bps-global-data-for-2017-shows-record-highs-for-coal-and-renewables/ ...

Re: New 80 volt push mowers

I got the 80V chainsaw yesterday. Seems like it will work great. I am planning on trying it this weekend, we'll see how it goes. It was heaver than I expected (14lbs with battery). Get one of these. It allows my wife to use the weed whip with the 4 Ah battery. https://www.greenworkstools.com/shop-b...

Justin,

I am looking at that PV roof, and trying to imagine riding along our scenic two lane roads in central Virginia, which are idyllic for half an hour at a time, until you find yourself next to a propane truck with a logging truck coming the other way.

I wish you all the luck in the world!

I was getting a bit concerned that you got run over, but figured you were more likely spending mad hours rebuilding everything. Glad it was the latter. :-)

Re: Tesla Model 3

So Tesla delivered 9,220 EVs for May. Tesla was over one third of all plug-in sales alone! The next six combined are only 8,975, and only 2,701 of those are straight EV. All the rest don't amount to dog droppings.

Just watched the video. You are going to have a fabulous time.

My Thys used a Shimano silent clutch hub, which had very little rotation before engaging. At 4 mph, on a steep hill, in my lowest gear, it was still frustrating having any lost stroke. I dreamed of zero loss.

Re: My Sun Trip Bike, Back to Back Tandem Trike with Rowing Generator, Pedals, +Solar

OK great to know. We ordered some of these Macmaster Carr pulleys but they didn't show up before the weekend so we'll see if I have time to make them into spares. On the pulleys: The pulleys were too narrow to use a shoulder, and snap ring to trap the ball bearing. The nylon was too elastic for a p...

Re: My Sun Trip Bike, Back to Back Tandem Trike with Rowing Generator, Pedals, +Solar

Did the grit and oil also ended up causing wear of the pulley grooves as well? I machined these current pulleys from a piece of round PVC plastic stock I had lying around, but it sounds like I may want to remake them from a material that's tougher against abrasion. Nope. Never had any problem with ...

Re: Chevy Bolt first drive

Thought I'd do another update. We finally got our 250 kWh per month of PV from our electric coop's "solar garden" this month. Hardly anybody has signed up for this, so we will get a chance, at some point, to opt for more 50 kWh chunks of PV power. I got my second battery management system software u...

JR would certainly agree with you. His written pieces are easier to read than his videos are to watch.

Re: Model 3

Yeah. That is what I am hoping for too. I figured 50% for worst case scenario. That is how we talked ourselves into spending that much money on a car we really don't need. The 2006 Corolla would have gone another ten years with little maintenance. But this was my shot at a car of the future. I've wa...

1054 pounds including charger/DC-DC, 4416 cells, 96s46p, 2 modules 23s46p, 2 modules 25s46p, ~80 kWh, 75 kWh usable? I guess it is 66 kWh usable. https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-sets-new-range-record-at-606-2-miles/ I see that these guys got 75 kWh out of theirs. https://www.teslarati.com/tesla...

Re: Tesla Model 3

Here is my opinion, as someone who spent 50% more for an EV than a comparable ICE. My personal belief is that nobody has yet figured out how to make money on EVs at prices close to ICE. At comparable prices we might see actual consumer demand. At this point, none of my liberal, Prius driving friends...

Re: My Sun Trip Bike, Back to Back Tandem Trike with Rowing Generator, Pedals, +Solar

Justin, You may have procrastinated, but you are really making up for lost time...amazing progress. On your cord drive; I used 1/8" braided kevlar, but you may have similar issues. Over time; water, oil and grit worked into the cord at the pulleys. They looked fine but eventually ground through the ...

Model 3 battery teardown!!

Everyone will want to watch this Model 3 battery teardown video from JR! I watched at double speed, and re-wound for the interesting bits, like onboard charger and DC-DC in one unit. 1054 pounds including charger/DC-DC, 4416 cells, 96s46p, 2 modules 23s46p, 2 modules 25s46p, ~80 kWh, 75 kWh usable? ...

Re: My Sun Trip Bike, Back to Back Tandem Trike with Rowing Generator, Pedals, +Solar

I'm a big fan of clipless pedals on a recumbent. A couple of threaded holes, for pedals, is much easier than footboards too. It's funny. I had this discussion with folks on the C2 rowing forum years ago, and many were all, "No you'd be trapped upside down in the shell and drown. Then Shimano came ou...

Re: My Sun Trip Bike, Back to Back Tandem Trike with Rowing Generator, Pedals, +Solar

Rowingbike Pivot Drive Concept.jpg It's going to look a tiny bit goofier than the sliding design, but has so many advantages for reliability by trading a pair of parallel sliding rails for a single pivoting structure. And it should be lighter too. I think it's CAD modeling time to make a proper 3D ...

Thanks for clearing that up. Your understanding of both styles is correct.
