Re: 10S custom skate ESC: testers wanted!

Recently I have been spending a lot of time on getting FOC running and currently I have both sensored (with pulse encoder) and sensorless FOC working. My code is inspired by this code: https://github.com/madcowswe/Servo/blob/master/FPGA/software/ServoDrive/Servo.c and the sensorless observer is the ...

Re: VESC Humming!!

Thanks guys... But I think this it totally my own fault!! I've just cut it out the shrink wrap and found this.. Looks like my positive capacitor leg has touched the board somehow and fried it!! I don't know how... Check my pictures, All the metal was covered in heat shrink, no metal exposed at all!...

Re: VESC Uart communication

You seem to run an old VESC furmware, can you try with the latest one? Also, I would leave UART speed default to 115200. Thanks for the tips. I have to run at 9600 because the Adafruit UART only runs at that speed. I'm also stuck on Firmware 1.6 as updating via BLDC tool isn't working for me. I've ...

Re: 10S custom skate ESC: testers wanted!

Regarding 4.10: I think they are fine, but I have _not_ tested them myself since my boards haven't arrived yet. I think I will get 10 pieces some time this week, but I'm not sure. I haven't talked much with onloop at all about him selling VESCs, I only talk with Jacob occasionally who talks with onl...

Re: Issue: VESC with Nunchuk works only with full throttle

Nice! I was also planning to add a nunchuk command to the commands interface, but I haven't done it yet. I'm also planning to use the commands interface from the nrf app so that there is no need to add an extra arduino to read data, but I right now I'm working on the FOC implementation so I won't ha...

Re: VESC Uart communication

So I've been trying to get data back from my VESC this weekend, but no joy so far. I'm using an Arduino, and based largely on pkondratyuk's code, just modified to call COMM_GET_VALUES which should return me a nice stream of data about voltages, amps, RPMs, etc. I am no expert on Arduino or serial c...

Re: Wiiceiver with VESC?

Did the pulsewidth do down to half (where it is supposed to be off) some time? If it didn't and safe start is active, it will prevent the motor from starting. Safe start will only let the motor start if the input throttle has been within the the region that corresponds to not driving the motor for s...

Re: VESC, current control and wheelspin

thats very real traction control - you detect the slip by rpm "jumps", basically rmp changes or accelerations that are not physically possible ... and reduce torque in that moment. one of the best amateur traction control systems in motorcycle racing works like that. and my evolve on loose terrain ...

VESC Uart communication

I have finally written a tutorial for communicating with the VESC using UART. It would be nice if someone can give this a try:

Re: VESC, current control and wheelspin

Could we not achieve some level of traction control by watching for too rapid of a change in motor rpm / equivalent parameter? thats how some motorcycle traction control systems work. I know that some RC car escs do have traction control and now that I think about it: boosted and my evolve have tra...

Re: First Electric Skateboard Build

The current draw from the battery will only be high on high duty cycles, so when going slowly you can have high torque and high motor current without drawing much from the battery since the motor inductance, input capacitors and PWM work like a switched mode power converter. For this to be safe you ...

Re: VESC, current control and wheelspin

you can put a sensor on one wheel and have traction control with only one motor, it needs a bit of extra software though. I have considered doing that on my single motor longboard some time since the one with two motors and traction control behaves nicely in this regard.

Re: 10S custom skate ESC: testers wanted!

That really sounds like a hardware problem. Is the PCB from the old enertion batch or from the new one? Did you run the sensorless motor configuration? I don''t know whether the VESC is from the old batch or not, maybe you can check the attached pictures... Yes, I run the sensorless motor configura...

Re: 10S custom skate ESC: testers wanted!

Another small update (I will write a blog post about this when I have made more progress): I have been using a VESC on my ebike that I have been working on for a bit now and then. It is an old mountainbike that I had since I was 12. A few days ago I made the first long test ride (50km), and it worke...

Re: 10S custom skate ESC: testers wanted!

Nice! Is there a link for the bom and gerbers? I want to get an order put in asap. Is the current offset the boost that happens at a certain speed? Didn't mind that too much interested to see the difference. The current offset is exactly what causes that boost. The BOM and gerbers are on github, bu...

Re: 10S custom skate ESC: testers wanted!

I just tested hw4.8 on my rc buggy with lizards 1717 motor (the most difficult testing platform I have access to right now) and it is a big improvement over 4.7 for sure. I have changed the shunts to 0.5mOhm to allow higher current and set the current limit to 120A. Even without extra capacitors the...

Re: FAULT_CODE_DRV8302

Hi guys, today a made a very short test drive with fully loaded battery. I drove 50 meters straight and than some meters down hill... rolling no break no acceleration. After maybe 15 meters I tried to accelerate (speed was slow, around 5-10 km/h) but it didn't work, so I tried to break just to see ...

Re: VESC on wheel motors

Hub motors behave quite differently from other motors and will not give as much torque in general. I had a chance to try hub motors for one km before one of them failed, and to make startup from a complete stop work at all with them I had to change the following settings in the sensorless tab: Minim...

Re: 10S custom skate ESC: testers wanted!

Ran the 1.12 FW with 90 A motor/battery limit and 0.2 Current back-off gain. The lowered back-off gain is very nice: peak Currents now go up to around the set limit (peaked a little over 2.4 kW from batteries) and Current seems to fluctuate less heavy. Motor temps might be a bit lower too, although...

Re: KV vs Gearing?

I'm not sure if this was clearly covered before, but another compromise with gears is the rpm range. Of course this will only be a problem for some motors / applications. Gears work like going arround the block to avoid a steep hill. Again, everything depends. You can gear for a theoretical top spe...

Re: KV vs Gearing?

vedder 3000rpm or less is typical for hub motors. What kv would u recommend a hub motor have? That is the problem with hub motors. While a single 6364 motor with gearing can take you up any hill, the same single 6364 motor can never do that as a hub motor. You need at least two hub motors to climb ...

After some trial-and-error, I at least got the BLDC tool executing now on the thumbdrive, but somehow I still get some socket error preventing the VESC to connect over the USB cable... have to dig into that some more later, would be cool to just have a bootable USB drive with all the stuff needed t...

Hopefully last question before this is fixed w/ your adjustments. What's the difference between the 33k .bin and default .bin? Both are 28KB it seems... Re: KV vs Gearing?

BOTH PRODUCE THE SAME AMOUNT OF HEAT FOR THE SAME TORQUE That is correct and very important to understand. You can run a 1 turn 2000kv motor just fine on a longboard if the electronics and cables can deal with that. running on high voltage causes higher switching in the esc and motor which cause lo...
