Re: Should a 8S cassete be a good option for e-bikes?

It will be a 2000w+ middrive road bike I predict that it will work okay for the first several rides and then the teeth on both the chainring and the cassette side of the will start to wear a little. You will start to notice the chain "snagging" and the teeth will get to the point in which...

Re: Need brakes upgrade for etrike conversion.

Aww too late, I was going to chime in and suggest one of those speed controllers that does PWM based regen. You pull a brake lever and your motor regenerates based on how hard you pull the "e-lever". Pulling the lever all the way down is enough to lock the rear wheel up. Glad you got the n...

Re: 24v hub motor on 48 battery

Motors hit a point in which their efficiency drops due to overvolting. Your wh/mi numbers go up if you overvolt too much.

Re: How to plan how much battery I need for a TSDZ2?

You would need to know the watt hours of your battery: ah x volts = wh for instance 10 amp hours x 44 volts = 440 watt hours 10 watt hours per mile = you are in good cycling condition and have an efficient bike 20wh/mi = pretty typical cyclist condition, pretty typical bike 30wh/mi = not atypical es...

Re: Overvolting Panterra motor

1) you can flow as much voltage and amperage down that motor as you want; unless we are talking something super extreme the flow of electricity isn't what is going to kill it, it's overheating that will kill it. 2) Motors often have overvolt protection built into them so you can overvolt a little. Re: OK, who rides a recumbent???

I like my recumbent. I have a hard time breaking 20wh/mi with my diamond frame and I have a hard time breaking 10wh/mi in my recumbent. Despite the extra weight of a third wheel, the bend just rides more efficient. I can ride pretty much all day in my recumbent and not get very sore. I always feel l...

Re: higher or lower kv

So because the amps are limited i am better of with a low kv-motor for a fast acceleration-bike? Actually the acceleration isn't effected that much by kv, just the motor temps. Its a mis-nomer to say a low kv motor accelerates faster. The torque to the wheel is the same, it's just that the motor do...

Re: higher or lower kv

Your motor will have an optimal "band" that it works in. When the motor is bogged down only maybe half of the energy is going towards forward momentum and the other half is generating heat; your motor will overheat at too low of rpms under high power. You will want to either gear or kv you...

Re: Hub motor industry dying?

How do you guys cope with motor overheating in such hot places like Phoenix ? Maybe it's not even competition of mid drives that will kill the hub motor industry as OP suggested, but climate change... Morning temps should not be an issue, but coming home from work at 6p.m when it's 50°C outside - o...

Re: Hub motor industry dying?

Mid drives are not outperforming big hubs, unless the trails are very slow and technical. When the trails are nice enough to speed, mid drives are left in the dust. Yeah but it’s an e-dirtbike at that point. There is merit to doing most of the work with your legs and just having assist when you nee...

Re: Hub motor industry dying?

The problem with hubs is that you can put miles and mile and miles on those things and they just never wear out. I finally got to the point where the wheel bearings wore out but even that wasn't enough. Just popped a few new bearings in and kept going. Mid-drives are not a one-time sale for the vend...

Re: Poor Man's RV

I'd aim for 30-50mi/day. 50mi/day is a pretty standard rate for bike touring. As long as you can find a campground or town every 30mi, no need to do the 50 unless you feel like it. *shrug* 135 miles is the most I personally have done in one day (https://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&a...

Re: Safety/protection requirements for 'naked' blue battery

You can seal it up tight to no ill effect from heat. You won't get full mah out of your pack the closer you get to 1800watts draw. I bet someone posted the exact formula somewhere but if you want a full 3500mah you will run about 20% of your 1800 watts or 360 watts. When it's cold out that number go...

heat and Wh/mi

If you overvolt too much your cruise efficiency starts to go down, your motor instead of being able to handle let's say 2000 watts starts to hit maximum heat (about 110 Celsius for me) at maybe 1800 or 1500 watts.

Utah has posted speed limits on their "multi-use paths" and doesn't seem to enforce wattage; 20mph I think. What's it like in Phoenix now with the scooter thing? I haven't been to Phoenix in a few years and last time I was there were scads of scooters everywhere. It seems that you can cell...

Re: Solid tires?

Airless tires had not been popular so far, because they ride horribly at speed, and most are making rims fragile since hits are not spread around the wheel. I like solid tubes. I would liken the experience to something similar to riding in the mud on the bicycle side of things but install them on t...
