Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

You totally missed the point of world energy scale. One country requiring 1/40 of electricity can boast of big gains in rebuildable electricity percentage when they are consuming a large part of available world hardware production. To see the whole world doing this will reveal the hard limits to ac...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

The other consideration I often think about when Germany is bragging about it's solar and wind capacity is that much of the hardware is not made in Germany. So they are buying it from a global market. Actually we make and export a lots of things in both industries. Solar is a lot more than just mak...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

I think some of the most important efforts in the world of renewable energy are the efforts to equip villages across Africa, India and Southeast Asia with microgrids. Getting a microgrid in a village to provide 20 watt-hours a day per person makes a much larger change in quality of life than supply...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

Great argument for Gen III reactors. For me it is very simple: Look at the amount of radioactivity stored at the reactors site and expect all of it to escape. That's your worst case. The nature of the disaster is not relevant. If you are able to handle that amount of radioactivity from a engineerin...

... If you keep telling yourself often enough, eventually you might believe that.. ! .....but anyone who bothers to check the facts, will not ! 2020 solar production (up to June 16)...24.5 TWh 2020 Nuclear production same period....28.2 TWh And of course you ignor the fact that the Nuclear g...

Re: BionX display using Bluetooth

The BionX DS3 display is just a dumb display. No information is stored there. (it's different with the BionX Gen 2 console/display) Use the standard firmware 4.0 or the firmware 4.1 that includes the debug screen and that's it. No need to "program" anything if the DS3 display does have a f...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

In fact it harms the climate tremendously. I can't get behind an attempt to damage the climate beyond what's already been done. We should be working on ways forward, not ways to go backwards. Obviously nuclear has its benefits, mainly for the climate. On the other hand our nuclear reactors are old ...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

The increase shown is “generated” power. But 3.3 TWh increase over 2018 is actually only 0.6% of the annual total generated. ....Huge overcapacity ! That's why it is wiser to look for long term trends and the longer trends look quite encouraging. We are not there yet, but it is doable. We already i...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

Jack,..why do you think Germany retains that 100+GW of coal and gas generation ? A fossil fuel powerplant by itself does not harm anyone very much. It's the burning of fossil fuels inside that does the harm. So 100 power plants running at just 10% capacity has the same impact on carbon emissions th...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

Easy; convert it to methane via the Sabatier process. MUCH easier to store and transport. I think that the next 10-20 years we should concentrate on the elecricity mix and make some hydrogen out from electricity and some hydrogen from natural gas via pyrolysis (Kvaerer) As long as you use natural g...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

In Germany electricity production from coal is falling very quickly now, even lignite power blocks are shutting down, so they are only switched on alternately for some days. Production from natural gas is more or less stable so far (expected to rise after the final nuclear shutdown), renewables hav...

I'll choose "fly less" for $20
Using biofuels in ICE cars is a very stupid waste of precious resources. Just fly less and use biofuels for the remaining planes. Problem solved.

New interesting articles on Hydrogen breakthroughs etc.

"...New material releases hydrogen from water at near-perfect efficiency..."
"...Only works at UV wavelengths..."

The energy of UV is less than 10% of total solar irradiation.

No need to read and further.

Re: EV charging prices in Europe increase 500%

, if you want to charge for cheap your own solar system is helpful with charging costs for solar electricity at 9ct/kWh. But, every kWh you divert to charge your EV is a kWh you do not have for use in the house !..so you would have to replace it with a grid supplied kWh at market prices. Effectivel...

Europe missed out on the Bolt because of GM pulling out of Opel/Vauxhall :(
It's called Opel Ampera-E over here. It's a quite good car.

This (Bolt, Ampera-E) cars electric drive train and battery are made by LG Chem anyway, so only the "shell" is not made in Korea.

Re: EV charging prices in Europe increase 500%

79ct/kWh is the maximum price. You can use other tariffs to use the Ionity system with prices around 30-40ct/kWh, which is not so far away from typical household tarifs and okay for occasional(!) super quick charging. Super fast chargers are not meant for everyday charging if you have other options ...

Re: Best Li-ion cell model for ebike pack?

Almost all lage battery packs built with those cells (edit: 30Q) have failed in the pedelecforum.de, as users have reported over here. There is no possibility to repair those packs, the cells fail one after one. Only very few people report no issues. Maybe this 30Q cell was never intended to be used...

Yes it would be good to have another cylce test, with lets say: 5A for LG M36 and MJ1 5-10A for 29E7 and M29 10-15A for HG2 and VTC6 with 2A charge current or so That would be way closer to how the cells usually being used in real world. Typically the battery in an electric bike should/will last fo...

Re: One stop for solar charging ebike info?

I do recommend "semiflexible" panels wit Sunpower cells. Use moduls with PTFE coating, NOT PET coating. Do NOT treat them as semiflexible panels, they need a very riged surface to mount them. If you let them flex the cells will brake and output power will degrade quicky. Do NOT use high vo...

Re: Im going RC LiPo - General advice / BMS / Charger

That's my point. 1. Don't use cheap cells, especially do not use cheap cells that are optimized for anything but safety. 2. If you build a battery pack build it as safe as possible. 3. Do not abuse it 4. If it catches fire you better have it in a place where fire and smoke are contained. This is qui...
