Re: Nucular electronics - complete kit for ev! [beta]

Also, I did a full auto setup on the motor. The bike was off the ground so there was no load on the wheel. Its a direct drive chain mid drive setup. Since there was no load the chain flops around quite a bit when the motor is at 6krpm. Is there anything to be gained here by disconnecting the chain f...

Re: Nucular electronics - complete kit for ev! [beta]

Looking for a little help regarding a 3 speed switch. I have a 3 position switch connected to I05 I06 and ground in the I02 port. I can only get speed 2 and 3. In the I/O configuration menu I have: Speeds mode - switch Can Port 5 - S 1of3 Can Port 6 - S 3of3 I tried swapping those 2 settings to chec...

Re: Nucular electronics - complete kit for ev! [beta]

Nice solution. I'm assuming there is a main contactor in there. You have more room under the hood than my bike. I thought about one of these Marine breakers with a resistor in parallel. But even that is a bit big. They also aren't rated for 84v so I dont know how long if ever it would take to burn t...

Re: Nucular electronics - complete kit for ev! [beta]

Makes sense. So it wont damage the controller but is still needed to keep the spark down on the contacts. I move my battery between a few bikes so I never leave it connected. I sure wish there was an elegant solution for precharge. My battery connections all have anderson PP connections for precharg...

Re: Nucular electronics - complete kit for ev! [beta]

Out of habit I made a pre-charge resistor lead off of the main battery input of my new Micro controller today. I used a 50ohm resistor in parallel with the main leads that I connect first. Was this needed? Does the nucular already have some spark suppression to prevent the inrush spark at the batter...

Cool to see you moving forward so quickly. I have the same lipo alarms. They are deafeningly loud. I think they are designed to be heard from the ground when you are flying an RC aircraft. Virtually all of the cheap alarm and cell monitor devices on the market tend to drain your cells unevenly. Its ...

I 2nd Mikebike. I also was impressed with the sale once my number came up and the shipping was quick and easy. I have been around the diy electric vehicle community for over 10 years now. In that time I have seen awesome controllers born out of the DIY market go extinct. It's hard to develop a produ...

Re: Trials Motorcycle - 1st Build. Qs-motor +Votol

There is no single right answer. Being full for any amount of time is bad for them. It causes the formation of dendrites which will eventually destroy the cell. They are also more dangerous when full because there is more energy in them. If they are charged to their absolute upper limit and then all...

Re: Trials Motorcycle - 1st Build. Qs-motor +Votol

I know what that is like. My RC lipo stays perfectly balanced most of the time. I bulk charge it outside or under supervision in the basement and I always check it with a cheap cell log meter before And after I ride just to make sure there aren't any weird erratic voltages or outliers. I have some c...

Re: Trials Motorcycle - 1st Build. Qs-motor +Votol

If you can live with the weight and volume it would be in your best interest to just run all of those packs at the same time.

No sense in letting half of them sit on the shelf. They'll be much happier cranking out high amps together.

Re: Trials Motorcycle - 1st Build. Qs-motor +Votol

That is why I was suggesting that you get wye adapters between the balance leads in each parallel group. Something like this: balance wye.jpg In the above pic this WYE adapter would be for paralleling 6 packs of 2cells. When you parallel a 6s lipo pack together at the main discharge lead (red black ...

Re: Trials Motorcycle - 1st Build. Qs-motor +Votol

With your zippy example above 6s 6200mah packs, you need to buy 9 of those to have 18s 3p. It would be 3 groups in series each containing 3 packs in parallel. The reason people dont all do this is complexity, wiring costs, and safety. Rc lipo is dangerous when mishandled. You need to treat them like...

Re: Trials Motorcycle - 1st Build. Qs-motor +Votol

The battery in your picture appears to be a 6s 4.5ah pack. Thats 6 cells in series at 4.2v per cell. The total voltage of that pack fully charged is 4.2v X 6 = 25.2V. The nominal avg voltage of a cell is what we use for the math. Depending on the exact cell type 3.7 or 3.8v is about the average volt...

Re: Trials Motorcycle - 1st Build. Qs-motor +Votol

These cells linked below built into a pack by dogdipstick would be a great option. 15Ah is a good size for what you are trying to do. They Are as cheap as lipo and would use the same cheap alarms And an rc balance charger as lipo. They also are small enough to be split apart into multiple modules li...

Re: Trials Motorcycle - 1st Build. Qs-motor +Votol

THIS iS AWESOME! Everything you wrote has made things so much clearer to me. This is making sense! You have pretty much provided me with the formula(s) I was missing. How does this translate to torque? I NOW get 12kw = 16hp. My motor is rated for 40 ft. lbs of torque (56nm) at 3000RPm (I think). My...

Re: Trials Motorcycle - 1st Build. Qs-motor +Votol

I've decided to purchase a proper battery and skip the guess work. Only problem is I haven't the slightest idea on how many batteries I can fit in there. I think I may get a smaller battery to begin, and then use it on a smaller project later. Something like a 20ah to start. Back to the battery spe...

Re: Wire gauge and amps, series vs parallel

Your concept of the Current flow sounds correct. The nickel strip is very wide so although its thin there is still a good amount of conductor. Picture rolling that nickel strip into a tight cylinder. It would be substantial cross section wire gauge for the small contribution each cell is adding. It ...

Re: 9c hub in 26" rim super slow wind with temp sensor

Yes. By 20s I mean 20 cells in series. Since almost everyone is using li-ion cells that are fully charged at 4.2v each then 20s is 84v full and about 74v avg. Thats what I was using this motor with. When ebiking I prefer to cruise at around 20-25mph. Any slower than that and I'll just take a non ele...

Re: 9c hub in 26" rim super slow wind with temp sensor

Possibly a good fit depending on how fast you want to go. Being a direct drive slow motor it will run with pretty much any controller on the market. With the more common 52v battery packs available right off the shelf you'd be looking at a top speed of about 15-18mph. If you run a higher voltage pac...

Re: Electric motorcycle motor choice

Are you sure you can build a reduction drive to get your 10krpm down to something useful at the wheel? Typically you end up adding about the same amount of weight in gear reduction parts as you would have just using a larger motor that isn't on the verge of becoming a fireball the whole time. In my ...
