Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

And your personal power consumption is? (please name also your share of power use from your country and name your use of grey energy/power from imported products) So if you firmly believe we are "near the doomsday apocalypse" what are you personally doing to avoid it? What amount of power do you th...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

The IPCC is apparently even waking to the reality that wishful thinking about the timeline for decarbonization or hoping for the future possibility of massive bioenergy with carbon capture and storage does not make it pragmatically possible. There is new discussion promoting a required degrowth of t...

The Limits of Clean Energy If the world isn’t careful, renewable energy could become as destructive as fossil fuels. BY JASON HICKEL | SEPTEMBER 6, 2019, 8:51 AM The conversation about climate change has been blazing ahead in recent months. Propelled by the school climate strikes and social movement...

For news about Tesla's Solar-city here He didn't mention the 750 million that SolarCity took from the state of NY. This is why I like the banana video, just swap bananas with apartments. What would be really great is if someone made the same video with just apartments instead of bananas. https://ww...

Central and Eastern USA are some of the few spots on Earth that have actually cooled over the last decade due to the new instability of the Polar Vortex which allows Arctic air to dip down over the continent due to a much warmer Arctic region.

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

If you listen to financial news on the radio, you'll hear a daily report on economic growth, with dire predictions if it has slowed, and cheerful tones if growth appears to be rising. Yet we know that endless economic growth is incompatible with life on a finite planet. Jason Hickel's article on the...

Looks like microwaves rather than lasers are the preferred option. At least that's what the Chinese and Caltech projects are opting for: https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottsnowden/2019/03/12/solar-power-stations-in-space-could-supply-the-world-with-limitless-energy/amp/ CalTech is working on an orbi...

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

Some considerations for the laser. 1050 nm wavelength is common and would be perfect for the panels to convert. Standard 4mm commercial lasers offer 5 mrad divergence. A low Earth orbit at 500 km would result in a 3km beam width on the ground. Probably have to spec something an order of magnitude be...

100 years from now, if we are lucky, most of our energy will come from non-fossil-fuel sources, and the remaining oil will be used as feedstock for the various industrial processes that need them. Easier to see chart of predicted energy by source for the different Shared Socio-Economic Pathways that the scientists are now using for the updated climate change models. Right. You will need more land, and more people dedicated to farming, to produce the same results without natural gas centric fertilizers. And that will be a big change to our economy. (And diets)
Most people will go back to working for their living and far, far fewer people will have "jobs".

Re: Wind and Solar vs Coal, Gasoline, Nuclear

There's actually some good debate on this. There are methods of raising livestock and crops that with proper management can produce yields better than we currently get from these intensive mega farms (calories/acre). I would have to see a study on that stated this. I of course see memes and stories...

which means we will need new, less intensive farming methods. Fortunately we have them. But unfortunately the less intensive farming methods will not produce total world calories at this scale. The Green Revolution and Big AG (and antibiotics) has allowed us to triple the human population since 1955.
