Re: CX concept

My gut reaction is, just make your bike from a sturdy MTB frame. It just makes no difference if you strap 25 pounds of motor and battery to a 15 pound bike, or a 30 pound bike. But it does make a ton of difference, if your choice is not stiff enough from side to side to ride comfortably with a larg...

Re: CX concept

Have a read of my cyclocross build based off a 29er frame. It sounds sort of similar to what you want I think. 1. I solved the throttle mounting issue on drop bars/STI levers (watch the vid). 2. Use some good 10AWG cable and you shouldnt have issues. High core thread count (eg turnigy silicone) mean...

Re: Raged Cube Reaction 29er Cyclocross BBS02 Build Thread

Small update... I changed the shoes to some more road friendly Continental TravelContact 28" tires ( 700c, 28" and 29er share the same wheel, just diameter changes) pumped up to 55psi and it's improved battery range to do the trip to work and back on full power on 1 charge. 30km with 5.8Ah of batter...

Re: New Kepler carbon build

5800 series 105's are about the cheapest you can buy with hidden cables but then you are forced to go 11 speed. You can find 10 speed all over the place with hidden cables. I run Sram Apex on my roadie, and it is dirt cheap, and 10-speed. Does SRAM shift indexing work across both disciplines? Eg. S...

Re: BBS02 - How many watts do you really need for a MTB?

You need more power for 30mph as wind resistance is a major factor (It's a logarithmic algorithm past 25mph I believe). As a cyclocross/gravel grinder/commuter I upgraded to a bigger chainring for higher top speed to add leg input for 30+mph whilst maintaining a good cadence. To be honest though, th...

Re: [bike doping]How do you understand this humilliation?

Its only illegal in a race. Most of us build to commute or for fun. Sure the news wasnt great, however it has raised awareness and there is now an ebike race categoy. This means more popularity, more money, more development and better products moving forward.

Re: Raged Cube Reaction 29er Cyclocross BBS02 Build Thread

Yes... the bottle cage mounts are insufficient for lateral force with batteries. I found the same issue with dolphin packs. Wait till you've seen one after an accident including lateral force. It will happily rip the bidon mounts right out of the frame. Trick is to make a sweeter in between mount w...

Re: New Kepler carbon build

I know where you are coming from but the geometry of this bike with drops really bends you over. Makes for an uncomfortable commuter. The Flat bar setup makes the most practical sense with this bike. With regards to the Microshift shifters for drop bars, I did look at this. Unfortunately they do no...

Re: Trayser ebike from New Zealand firm ETT

Thats might look nice but its horrible design ergonomics and definitely not safe to ride. 1. Why have 2 panels sticking up in the middle to fcuk your standover height? 2. Each panel represents a sharp edge to cut yourself open in an accident. 2 panels sticking up between your legs and.... noballs....

Drop bars is where it's at. There's some cheapo microshift shifters around from cyclingdeal. I havent used them yet, but its an option for my next gravel grinder/cyclocross.

Re: Raged Cube Reaction 29er Cyclocross BBS02 Build Thread

Quick question on the build, as I'm considering a similar build. How is the chain ring clearance, and what size chainring would you recommend? My current 29er has a 68mm BB, and I'm wondering what the distance from the BB to chainring is for the BBS02. Great looking bike BTW. Sorry for late reply.....

o_O.. I told everyone that 29ers were the future over a year ago and it's great to be validated =) Hahaha j/k =) The MAC10T was a beast on my old 29er (Focus black forest which is now dead). I ran 52V (14S) and 40A controller for a top speed of about 52-55km/h. MAC10T torque would lift the front whe...

Re: Mixing in with the Normals. (Bafang speedo)

Carry a rag or an old hat and just throw it over it, that's what I've been doing anyway. This basically means I won't feel comfortable parking it anywhere in public, which is a great shame. Are there any alternatives that allow easy removal of the LCD? Do you even need to look at the LCD? If you're...

Re: Ebike conversion for Giant Toughroad (29er)

So I'm strongly leaning towards a BBS02 install with downtube shark battery pack. I think it'll be a nice clean look and plenty functional for what I want. With the BBSxx motors, how do you handle cable routing? Currently, all the cables (1 hydro, FD, RD) run under the BB. Obviously, the FD goes, l...

Not trying to get in the fight, but what is with this 250w thing? Is there something Eco-holy about that number that I don't get? Is there a link to some sort of test or experiment that validated 250w as opposed to 200w or 300w? Who/what person or agency decided for the world that this was the virt...

Re: Ebike conversion for Giant Toughroad (29er)

I run a BBS02 750w which is great as a commuter who likes to pedal.... I do have a megarange 9 speed ( 34t to 11t rear ) and got the upgraded 48t BBS02 front chainring so I could still input leg power above 50+km/h ( 32mph ). Just note that the BBS02/BBSHD is not the same as a big hub motor. I used ...

Re: New build next month

Pedal only is going to be more difficult with a motor attached to the bike. Geared motors dont have the Direct Drive Drag without the juice. It also depends on your controller (or something)... I dont really know. But yeah, a geared or mid-drive rides just like a normal bike albeit with the extra w...

Re: Rude comments from lycras. Should we reply?

Don't get me wrong guys, I love both types of bikes and wish I had a few ebikers out on the road that I could pace with for training. It by far a much too under utilized training tool for most serious cyclist. Nothing like trying to draft at 30+MPH for 5, 10 and 20 minutes for getting speed and pow...

Re: Ebike conversion for Giant Toughroad (29er)

Check if the Bottom bracket is threaded. You would really enjoy a BBSHD if you want to keep your good component setup and keep it feeling like a bike. My cyclocross is a similar setup (29er all rounder with 1 x 9 ) but with dropbars and 2.25" tires. The 9 speed rear is typically a megarange , so gre...

Re: Need Help Building My Own 29er from Parts

Cycling Deal is here down in Melbs. I've been there a few times (its just a big fat warehouse with a small shop front). With the Venzo frames, I was really tempted when I was building my 29er Cyclocross, but they didnt come in 16-17". You must be pretty tall (6ft) to get a 18" frame. Also take into ...

Re: Battery in backpack vs. mounted to frame

Backpack technology has advanced leaps and bounds over the last 10 years... I personally use backpacks which sport a mechanism similar to the deuter aircomfort system ( http://www.deuter.com/DE/en/back-systems-865.html ). It's a hiking backpack which lifts the weight off your shoulders and on to you...
