Re: My Bafang Ultra Mountain Bike! Frey AM1000

Yes, the part that broke is the lever on the top right side of the hub in the photo. The rotary shift lever is what failed when the chain jumped the rear cog and hooked it.

Re: My Bafang Ultra Mountain Bike! Frey AM1000

There are two different SA 5-speeds, the newer one with the rotary shifter was designed for high torque and ebikes from the start. I used one for a few hundred miles exclusively off-road with no issues until a chain derail broke the plastic shift cable connection at the hub, something that would not...

Replacing OEM Bosch or Shimano with Bafang Ultra?

Is anyone familiar enough with the OEM Bosch and Shimano motor mounts to know if they could be modified to accept a Bafang Ultra? Or are all three so uniquely proprietary that it would require a complete replacement of the mount? It would be part of the American tradition to replace a small motor wi...

What sort of top speed are you getting and at what voltage? I ask because I am just starting to research a hub motor to run at 72v on a suspension recumbent.

Re: Bosch mid drive

I would have to say the Yamaha has slightly quicker engagement on the PAS and uses regular chainrings also, so replacement is easier. The Bosch drivers get hooked teeth pretty quickly that suck a new chain up so every few chain swaps you need to do the driver too. Both systems though totally lock y...

Bikes Direct enters the eMTB market

http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/motobecane/full-suspension-mountain-bikes/ebikes-hal-eboost-electric-mountain-bikes.htm It looks like the ebike business is big enough for one of the major discounters to step in. A quick scan of the specs shows a 500wh battery of undetermined voltage and an inter...

If you want to help out independent builders then your association needs to offer liability insurance. This is the sad reality of todays world...... money hungry LAWYERS... its so bad, that people have become fearful of trying to help others in a life or death situation , out of fear of being sued ...

Re: Why are more of you DIYers not in the e-bike business?

I only do beach cruisers. I keep seven bikes on the floor, five step-thrus (we don't call them girl's bikes anymore) in five colors, but only one standard (diamond) frame in black only. Micargi Pentaria frame, 7-speed with all the Shimano stuff. Micargi maintains there own warehouse in Southern Cal...

Re: Why are more of you DIYers not in the e-bike business?

These is no money. How many ebikes would you have to sell to clear over $100k after taxes? Or even $50k? Seems like a life consuming commitment with very little return on the emotional investment. On the other hand, it seems like a perfect way to spend the best years of your life permanently stresse...

Guys, they don't need new laws. They just need to enforce the ones on the books now, the ones you all are already ignoring. You know, like riding on the sidewalk, power and speed limits, stop signs, riding on bike paths with electric motorcycles that have pedals, riding on paths and trails that ban ...

Re: News from Bosch today: New motors, ABS braking etc

We can expect to hear lots of announcements of ebike technology from Bosch in the coming year: they are up to their necks in fraud since it was their tech that allowed the Dieselgate cheating by VW as well as all of the new diesel cheating stories we are learning about. Different car companies keep ...

Re: What will it take to make ebikes, More mainstream ?

In America most bike stores sell mostly toys to people who use them for recreation, ebikes will be the same. What percentage of bike shop sales are MTBs, electric or otherwise? They are all sold as toys, as playthings to be used during leisure time and it seems like the OEMs are putting a lot of mon...

Re: What will it take to make mass produced ebikes, mainstre

Ebikes will never become mass market vehicles until they address the paired issues of sun and rain protection and climate control. We already have cheap and reliable two wheeled commuter vehicles and they stubbornly remain niche products. People do not want to bake in the sun or get soaked by the ra...

Pack to 100%...just a thought
Then you would never be able to balance that pack unless you had a 52v compatible bike on hand to run it down into 48v range once in a while.

Re: Ebay Fraud - ebike kit - xcceries seller

As ebikes of all sorts, not just DIY, become more common and the market center moves from hobbyist to consumer, expectations will change. You can see this in posts like this: people expect things they buy to be exactly as implied and to work perfectly everytime. And what's wrong with that? It's the ...

Re: Hitting the MTB trails

The car analogy is a false one, if you want to make it equivalent compare it to driving your car on the sidewalk that goes through the local park: does it really matter how slow you go when you shouldn't be there at all. The same applies to eMTBs and emotorcycles, if you want one ride it where you a...

Where do you live and ride? Is a 3000w eMTB legal there? I am building one too, but there aren't a lot of places to ride it around here. My Class 1's are permitted on any of the trails just a few hundred yards from my house, but the OHV area is about an hour away.
