Re: Converting a FAT-BIKE to electric for off-road use

A front hub motor would be possibly the worst configuration for single track trails especially those with any sort of climbs. If you limited yourself to dirt roads it would probably work OK. Having the unsuspended mass of a motor in the steering wheel is not ideal at all for rapid changes of directi...

Re: Recumbent trikes

Here in LA, there is a recent law that says a car or truck cannot pass closer than 3ft to a bicycle. The next step is to get it enforced here in the hit and run capital of the country. I suspect that the law abiding never got that close anyway and the rest won't care what the law requires..... :(

Re: Sturmey-Archer 5-speed hub, it's real!

Top speed was about 21/22 mph in third gear with a 52v pack, hot off of the charger and 20 a few miles later. The problem with extreme offset IGH cogs is that under torque the lateral force on the locking ring is too strong and the cog pops off. If you buy a bunch of lock rings and never reuse them ...

Re: Help-My BBSHD ebike eats chains and breaks gear teeth ~5

I have been happy with a 34t to 36t cog when used with a Nexus3 IGH combined with a 30t chainwheel. You can go to Sheldon Browns gear calculator to compare that to your setup. Second gear is direct drive and first is IIRC 33% lower. My current setup is 42/42 for the improved chainline with the great...

Re: Sturmey-Archer 5-speed hub, it's real!

The hub may very well be strong and I will be trying it again at some point, but the rotary gear selector is vulnerable to damage during derails which is a serious concern for me. I rarely have a chain drop, but when it happens I don't want it to lock me into a single gear. The traditional 3-speeds ...

Re: Gary Fisher conversion

The only charger I can suggest without reservation is the programmable Grin Satiator, it's more expensive than any of the others, especially when you add a basic charger to a battery order, but it is far more versatile and informative. If you get hooked on ebiking you will find that a high quality b...

4 ebikes with one not running as I wait for some mods to an ERT kit...... A pair of BBSHD Class 1 fatbikes with IGHs built to Karl's recipe, a FS fatbike with a BBSHD awaiting a power boost and a Lightning P-38 recumbent with a Magic Pie DD hub motor.

Does Luna still sell the Magic Pie? I've had one on my street bike for a year or so and its working fine. Integrated controllers have a lot to recommend them for a first ebike.

. . . .it made me wonder if when Lance rides an ebike, he has to put up with people holloring, "cheater." at him? I've been wondering if Lance Armstrong goes to the produce section and people yell "Cheater." He picks his kid up from school, people are shouting "Cheater." I don't think an ebike woul...

I mean I had simply not realized that electrifying my bike made me so ...

Re: Do You Build E-bikes for Resell

Thanks for the information. This would seem to give an edge to the DIYer who wants to run more power than any factory bike, as long as local rules and regulations don't get tweaked to favor the OEMs. I think we can all agree that performance based limits make more sense than "power" based ones and a...

IIRC There is a US regulation that states that electric motors imported for sale and use as bicycle motors shall be 750w or less. Re: Do You Build E-bikes for Resell

My bad...... Still, it more than proves my point. BTW, this is not due to any inherent defects in either the bikes, the batteries or the motors, just the likelihood of Mr. John Q. Public screwing something up in the first two years and the cost of making things right. (Mostly the batteries I suspect.)

Re: Do You Build E-bikes for Resell

Woodland Hills, much of the aggravation can be avoided by building bikes as simple as possible with as few unnecessary, and pron-to-fail bells and whistle as possible. Why would I want to build boring ebikes? And why would you think that building that sort of ebike will immunize you from assholes? ...

Re: Do You Build E-bikes for Resell

I've had many people offer to buy my ebikes, usually at a handsome profit, but I have always refused. I make up some excuse, but the real reason can be seen in the ongoing forum exchange between a buyer and a seller: who needs that sort of aggravation?

Re: Getting the best chainline with the bbshd

I'm not sure what 5:1 means, but the Nexus3 has a direct drive 2nd gear with first being -25% and third being +25%. The Sturmey Archer 3-speeds are the same AFAIK. I ran their new 5-speed for a while which is a DD third gear with the other steps the standard +or- 25%, I liked it, but found that the ...
