Re: Using bicycle's frame as heatsink for the Phaserunner

Now that I can finally log the stats from the Cycle Analyst and Phaserunner , I see that even with my kludged on big heatsink, the Phaserunner is still peaking at around 70 degrees Celsius when going up long, big hills. Is it worth trying to get the phaserunner to operate at lower temps or is this ...

Re: Why Li-Ion cells have huge difference between their charge/discharge rates?

First, before going on with the subject of the topic, you realize that if you are afraid of limping home due to approaching the lvc, you just need to slow down... I remind you that wind resistance energy loss works with the square of speed. With modern CA firmware, you can see your instant Wh/Km rat...

Why Li-Ion cells have huge difference between their charge/discharge rates?

Hi, Can anyone explain why the huge differences? For example, MG1 cells can be charged at ~0.5C but discharged at ~3C with no problem. Further more, many LiPo's (or as I call them - gunpowder  ) can be discharged at a whopping rate of 90C but only charged at 0.5C~1C or so. Chemistry is not ...

Re: Given 80 90 100 % what is the sweet spot?

You'll notice I am not advising riding off less than 100% charge. I don't see any benefit to discharging the battery deeper on any cycle. Its time at 100% charge that matters, more than anything. Ride off right away and you have nearly no time full. You are back to 90% in a mile or so. I strongly d...

Re: Lithium Batteries Shipping Rules Discussions

What about flying with Lithium batteries as a passenger? (when going abroad) I saw the new IATA rules several times, and didn't see any limitation on the number of spare <100Wh batteries you can carry inside the cabin. This means that you can carry as many LiGo batteries as you want, until you reach...

Re: Building many smaller A123 packs (NO BMS) and add them together

I was thinking of making several A123 ANR 26650 packs. (3,3v nom and 2300mah, each battery) Im considering having 6 packs, each of the battery pack with 6s10p. 1 pack would then give around 19.8 nom volt and 23AH. I want to connect lipo low voltage alarm to the 6 packs, so i can hear the alarm if s...

Wow! Just saw that thread. I am sorry for you, but I am glad that eventually you are able to resolve the damages with not so much losses of money... This thread gave me another reason to stick to my existing A123's, despite the tempting lightweight (but short life-cycle lived) modern cells. I happen...

Re: Panasonic NCR18650GA disclosed specs, and 30Q Samsung cells

I wanted to find more detailed specs about those cells, but the official ones are very, very shallow. For example, it writes only "standard" charge rate at 0.5C, and I am interested in: 1. The maximum continuously allowed charge rate. 2. The maximum peak charge rate. (Regen peak currents) All(!) 35...

Like I said I bounce my bike for 4.5 year old pack put together with plastic totes and duct tape I've dumped my bike 3 times I beat the s*** out of it on the trail. I believe you have contaminants inside the cell and or impurities. Maybe overcharge over discharge. But vibration on a road bike I don...

Re: A123 20Ah prismatic cells got expanded - What can be done?

As far as I know, there should be no problem with vibration as long as the cells are properly constrained. Zero motorcycles use prismatic cells these days (although Li-ion chemistry). This is a high vibration environment also but they hold up fine. Their packs are now fully potted. The cells inside...

Re: A123 20Ah prismatic cells got expanded - What can be done?

I still didn't get an answer for the most important question: The cells got inflated obviously because of the vibrations and the shocks of the road bike frame + their lack of pressure container. I am wondering, if those cells were meant to work at such unsprung environment even if I pack them with r...

Plus where did you get these cells what kind of tabs they have on them to someone add on some tabs and cut them out of a pack. New used and how old are they mine were probably made in 2010 or something I got him 5 years later or whatever that makes I got them second hand a year a go from a friend w...

Re: A123 20Ah prismatic cells got expanded - What can be done?

I have two 12s A123 20ah packs on my bike for 4.5 years and 1,088 cycles. I use at 40 to 90amp now. I get 17ah at that level. Bulk charge to 3.5v and rarely need balance. I had replaced one in the beginning as it puffed and got soft. I built the pack with plastic totes and fiber duct tape. The one ...

Re: A123 20Ah prismatic cells got expanded - What can be done?

A123 20ah as 4s for a car battery sounds good. Like to know how it works out and what size car. 3.5 × 4 = 14 volt high - 2.9 × 4 = 11.4 volt low . A car doesn't have lvc. I mean to use them as an auxiliary 12V battery for emergency - for example to jumpstart a car with a drained lead battery or for...

Re: Using bicycle's frame as heatsink for the Phaserunner

you guys are really overthinking this. if you run the phaserunner to the point that it needs such a big heatsink, it will eventually fail from its inability to shed the heat to the outer heatsink over time... its a tiny 6fet controller. The PR has a very good rollback mechanism, and as I understood...

Sadly, it won't dissolve back. So I just dump those cells, or, use 4 of them as an emergency car starter. I will rebuild the pack with spare good cells I have, and will press it with two aluminium plates. I understand that with proper pressure, even the massive shocks and vibrations of road-bike fr...

Re: A123 20Ah prismatic cells got expanded - What can be done?

I've read about making a small puncture with a pin and squeezing the gas out, then seal the hole with epoxy. I can't recommend this, but most accounts are that this works. Having too much gas in the pouch will make it hard to get proper compression on the plates. I heard from Russian speaking frien...

But you know the answer to your question ? The manufacturer said more 0.4C charge will reduce the cycle life....and you want to charge at 1C. Re: A123 20Ah prismatic cells got expanded - What can be done?

In that case yeah most likely vibration and fretting. The best you can do is fix it firmly to the inside of the enclosure, and fix the enclosure firmly to the chassis of the vehicle. Last thing you want is a cell moving independently of the chassis, even if there's a layer of foam/rubber there to d...

keep in mind that the higher rate you charge cells at, the harder it is on them. Re: A123 20Ah prismatic cells got expanded - What can be done?

With pouch cells of any persuasion, their biggest threat is physical trauma. Vibration, fretting, rubbing and puncture are real risks which need to be mitigated against. Unfortunately gaffa tape is not as good as a hard enclosure. The gassing happens when a cell is heated excessively - the electrol...
