Motor Longevity

I have a cyclone 360w motor and after 5 very good years it is getting rather noisy. I have put maybe 8 thousand heavily loaded city miles on the motor. It still does the job, but is getting rather noisy. It still does 25mph and pulls 350 lbs up an 8% grade if I help pedal. I have replaced 2 throttle...

Re: Question about nimh batteries on ebay

energy density is different than power. most ebikes will need 350watts power or about 10 amps at 36 volts. and peak power of at least 5oo watts. Ask the guy if the cells can deliver and hold 10 amps without significant voltage sag? I really doubt it. especially with button tabs, not solder/welded ri...

update "manual" thermal readings

Well yesterday I tripped the overtemp sensor on the 360w cyclone. Rode all day in the 90f heat making my rather senior body a bit worn out , heavy load, climbing a steep long hill when pretty tired and let the motor do most of the work; after the top it stopped helping and I was back to pedal only m...

the long length would easily be supportive of a chain drive, which youre loads would appreciate. consider a cyclone, but their are others too.

Some things to consider here; I would venture that about half of the U.S. population is incapapable of installing and maintaining anything but the simplest of ebike kits. they cannot fix a flat or adjust their brakes, much less wire a power harness. But they want a product to work. These folks need ...

Re: Tadpole trikes - Rear drive with regen? Issues?

Doc, same thing with my trike, Tricruiser, locked my rearwheel due to chain in wheel, lost directional control, locked fronts under panic, flipped. I consumed about $50 in supplies from the drugstore and needed a new helmet. We Join the tadpole end-over club. anyway, a regen brake would be hard to s...

Re: How important is weight of an ebike?

at the engineering brainstorming meetings, (local pub after work) it was often said: "You can change anything you want in a product, but you can seldom change only one thing" Soooo, if you lower the weight, what else changed? just cost? or did your loose or gain some functionality? So, you lightened...

Re: geared hub motor - no cruise, but regen?

my two watts worth:

Then in most cases one must answer the question, "Do I gain more with coasting/freewheeling or with regen braking?"

Yes both would be nice, but..... remote freewheel lockout?

So someone with more physics background could maybe help here?

Luke?

"manual" thermal readings

some time ago, I thought i read an article that converted how long you could keep your hand on a motor to approximate motor temperature. anyone remember or have insight to this? After a particular tough long hill climb, I could only keep my hand holding the cyclone motor about 4 seconds... app. temp...

Re: NIMH 36V 10Ah pack questions

you have gotten some very good info here. Let me put it a different way; NIMH has a higher internal resistance as it gets hot, discharged and at high currents. To avoid this, use voltage rather than current, to get your wattage. If you go 72v nimh at an 8 am max discharge rate from fairly decent set...

Any suggestions for a good lube to get for these gearboxes? Synth 90 wt?

thankx

Various thoughts on this topic; I think if "Car Share" and Car Co-op were more widely available, then being free of car ownership would be more wide spread. One 55 year old couple I know have been car free for about 5 years in Seattle and San Diego; but due to a sick elderly parent about 75 miles aw...

WOW! When I posted this question, it was not my anticipation that the title would ring true in "Failure is not an Option" uses.
