Re: Poor Man's RV

A guy on a dropbar road bike, and I, were stopped at a cross road, out in the country. It was a steep grade, and there had been a new culvert put under the road. We were stopped in deep gravel. When the way was clear, we both pushed off with our clipped in foot, and then clipped in the other foot. ...

Re: Poor Man's RV

OK, I guess I should have chosen my wording differently and not mentioned the MTB thing. I didn't mean to derail this thread even more. But since there are multiple responses... All I can say about those videos is that those aren't the sort of MTBing I'm referring to. They look like fun, beautiful r...

Re: Poor Man's RV

The primary motor would be the DD, and the geared motor would only apply power when climbing a hill, as all geared motors are significantly less efficient than DDs on flat ground conditions. That's a really interesting idea. Going that route, it seems like it would be fairly easy to use a motor tha...

Re: Poor Man's RV

But the rest of it - stop and go, county highways, bike haters - that's not a good enough reason to ride a long distance in misery. Riding a regular bike isn't misery for the vast majority of people. It's just fine. And to me, not crashing or possibly getting hit by a car is totally a good enough r...

Re: Poor Man's RV

A recumbent seems to me like much more of a niche "fun" bike for long, relaxing rides on your day off. It doesn't seem like it would be as practical as a regular bike for touring. Especially not in the case of the OP where he plans on doing many extended miles on gravel trails and very hilly/mountai...

Re: Illegal bike confiscation possibilities by police not up to date on newer laws

Unbelievable the cops responded to that call in less than 2-3 hours. Seriously. I've called the cops on people getting into fist fights a several times(bartender for years) and a guy actively stealing a bike once. I don't think they've ever shown in less than 15 minutes, if at all. One of their fav...

Re: Illegal bike confiscation possibilities by police not up to date on newer laws

I just kept my mouth shut to not cause a scene and disrespecting the Sergeant Eh. Respect to all people should be the default, but he sounds like a government street thug. No need to respect someone who starts off your interaction disrespecting you(assuming you were polite and merely explained your...

These are plastic of some sort, but seem to have a good rating after lots of reviews. They might be a good value.

Re: Poor Man's RV

I read somewhere that they make sandals that clip into pedals, any thoughts on that from your perspective? Personally, I don't think being clipped in makes sense for touring. I like to stop often and look at the beautiful sights I see, maybe stop in a shop for coffee in the first town I get to that...

Re: Liberty Stealth Climber (MTB)

That's a really interesting bike. Do you know what brand or how old it is? I wonder how it'll ride with the long wheelbase. Good and stable for high speed? Is the shock and fork "real" or just springs? That'll be a fun project. I vote for the high powered motor option! :D

Re: Poor Man's RV

Well as this drifts towards being less about the bike and more about the ride in general, I'll also offer a few things from my touring experience... As for the synthetic clothes, I personally would not use synthetics for shirts. You'll likely be biking more than one day in that shirt, and biking all...

This thread is really building up, and it's late, so I didn't have time to read it all. I'll just add my opinion on a couple of things from page two, where I made it to for tonight. As for the trailer, personally, I'd say the kids trailer with the push handle option is more appealing to me than a Bo...

Are you looking to sell just a wheel/motor, the electronics to go with it, or the full kit with battery? Those answers are going to greatly affect the value.

Re: Poor Man's RV

I don't recall if I saw this mentioned yet, but have you considered a trailer pulled behind the bike? A simple Burley trailer can be found cheap, and carries plenty of stuff in place of the two small children. I had one for a while that I used for all sorts of in town hauling. People use them for bi...

You have all the time in the world. Maybe ride it down to Costa Rica? That would be a blast. Maybe something to keep in mind once you've ridden across the US and are very comfortable with touring. I have done the Gorilla tape ghetto tubeless. It works great. I actually toured Costa Rica on my ghetto...

Re: Upgrading chainset on Cannondale F6 - how large can i go?

Figure out what model crank you have, or what the BCD(bolt circle diameter) is. That's what you really need to know in order to easily figure out if you can get a larger chain-ring. If you know your BCD is 104, for example, then you can just go search for "104bcd chainring" or something of that natu...

Re: Even the mormon capital of the USA has legalized medicinal cannabis..

I feel bad for those who have their lives destroyed over a single beer. We don't get to vote on these things though. This is something that's Insane to me. So many states have Crazy DUI laws these days. You'd be better off driving around on heroin than alcohol. At least then you'd get busted for he...

Re: Even the mormon capital of the USA has legalized medicinal cannabis..

That DUI law is insane. My god. They're really gonna be upset once they realize that most stoners think they drive better when they're high... I think that the "It's all good. Weed is totally harmless" attitude is the main problem with legalization. Personally I don't care if it's legal or not. I se...

36v vs. 48v Range Question.

I apologize in advance because I'm sure this has been answered, but I'm having trouble searching in such a way as to find the answer. Assuming you drove the same course under the same conditions, same motor efficiency, etc, would a 48v 1000w motor use more battery power than a 36v 500w motor simply ...

How does it handle? Have you ridden any of the Lime type rentals? I tried a Lime once. I can only describe it as sketchy and exciting, but not in a good way. It's certainly nothing like the scooters I rode as a kid. The steering was really twitchy and the thing was really jarring when hitting bumps....

Someone has this 1000w 48v Leaf Motor kit for sale for $150. He says he rode it for ~350mi before leaving the battery out in the cold and killing it. He says the LCD still turns on and the kit works fine. Worth it or should I keep shopping around for a new kit online? https://www.leafmotor.com/hub-m...

Re: Will The Trek Fuel Frame Suit My Needs?

I'm aware of the building costs. I've built up several bikes from a frame. I'm pretty good at taking a year to do it and browsing CL every day or two until I piece everything together for a really good price. I love bikes and browse CL anyway, so it's not like it's some huge time-investment loss for...
