Re: Illegal bike confiscation possibilities by police not up to date on newer laws

If it were me, I would sell the Urb-E and buy or build a legal or legal appearing ebike. Selling the Urb-E and building a new bike from a kit would probably be less than $1000 net. I don't know your financial situation, but it might be worth it for the peace of mind. Alternatively, if you have enoug...

Re: Illegal bike confiscation possibilities by police not up to date on newer laws

You don't give us the details of the plea deal. If it was a DUI that you were convicted of, that makes the Urb-E a motorized vehicle, not a bicycle. If you plead to something like public intoxication, then the court would have no authority to confiscate the Urb-E. In California, you can get a DUI o...

Re: Illegal bike confiscation possibilities by police not up to date on newer laws

Like I mentioned earlier. I don't have a valid driver's license. Almost every Moped that I see in Michigan has a "floor board". My URB-E does NOT have a floor board. Does that not make a Moped a "scooter"?? More confusion to add to the fire. Actually, if it did have a floorboard it would qualify as...

Re: Illegal bike confiscation possibilities by police not up to date on newer laws

URB-E makes this statement in their FAQ: "Do I need a driver's license, insurance or registration to buy an URB-E? Nope! According to US federal regulations, URB-E is categorize as a low-speed electric bicycle and does not require a license. We always encourage you to be as safe as possible while r...

Re: Illegal bike confiscation possibilities by police not up to date on newer laws

That link contains this sentence:

"This is the law that defines electric bicycles as those with fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than 750 watts."

Re: Changing pedal distance on cranks

I haven't heard of drilling and tapping a crank to move the pedals, but I suppose it is possible. Remember the left pedal uses a reverse thread, so you may have trouble finding a tap for that. You are not locked into a 5 spoke spider with a 130 BCD if you replace the chainring also. I think your bot...

Re: Perfect especifications for hills

It seems like that setup would work okay. Those are short hills. The first one averages a 9% grade for less than 1/2 a mile and the second one is a 6% grade for 1/4 mile. If I put a 9 Continents motor in the Grin motor simulator with a 25A controller and a 52V battery, it can go 14 minutes on a 10% ...

Re: Perfect especifications for hills

I think you will get better advice if you provide some additional information. How steep and long are the hills you will be riding it on? What bicycle will you be installing the kit on? How much range do you need? What will be the weight of you + bike + cargo?

Re: Illegal bike confiscation possibilities by police not up to date on newer laws

According to this, an electric bike must have a seat and operating bicycle pedals. https://detroitgreenways.org/michigan-laws-on-electric-bicycles/ Your URB-E doesn't seem to meet the definition of an electric scooter either because it doesn't "Have a floorboard designed for standing upon when ridin...

Re: EM3ev, setting the record straight on a few things

I bought a battery from EM3EV about a month ago. I paid for it with Paypal. They didn't ask for a DoB. It took 2 1/2 weeks to get the battery to California. During that time I received several emails with the status of my order. I even got an email after I received it asking me to confirm it arrived...

Re: Donor for tall guys

Been toying with the notion of wiring up a smoke detector to one of my arduinos and programming it to fire up an exhaust fan in the garage and notify me via text of any issues. Maybe this new larger pack will prompt me to get moving on it. I have some of the First Alert Z-Wave Smoke and CO2 detecto...

Re: Poor Man's RV

Even fluorescent shirts and reflective vests won't help with the phone zombies. Despite it being against the law, there are still many people that drive while reading their phones and texting. You just have to ride defensively and assume that every driver is out to get you.

Re: Donor for tall guys

If he were building a touring bike, I'd tend to agree. But this is a short to mid distance commuter that probably doesn't have to carry a whole lot or a very large battery. The photo doesn't show a lot of detail on the rear dropouts, so it is hard to tell how well equipped this bike is for fenders ...

Re: Surly Disc Trucker Build

I didn't make quite as much progress as I had hoped for this weekend. The front wheel is built and the crankset and headset are installed. The Sempu bottom bracket was more of a challenge than I thought it would be. Drilling the hole for the wire went smooth. However, if you have one of those little...

Re: Adventures On The Cheap

Dang, I was looking forward to giving Grin money, but $15 to ship a $4 spacer isn't awesome  What's the worst that could happen if I used a washer with a round hole in the middle? I am sure you could fabricate something. I think a round inside hole wouldn't matter. The outside diameter of...

Ah, lockring vs non-lockring is how you can tell. Thanks! TIL.... This was quite helpful to understand the difference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcgz3-XyNkI I have 8=speed shifters on this bike, but I'm still a little nervous about whether I can cram an 8-speed freewheel in there, like this g...

It looks like your hub motor uses a freewheel and not a cassette. You can't swap them.

Re: Donor for tall guys

Make sure you get something designed with a front suspension fork in mind. Because after 20mph, the ride can get pretty bumpy. Also, damn, that is a lot of money for a >25 year old bike. I see those in thrift stores sometimes here in Utah going for $50.. don't know about your area. Check this out. ...

Agreed. One of my first bikes in the 80's was a Haro Freestyler Master and that thing took one hell of a punishment. I found another Ad by the seller posted by RunForTheHills with a pic. Re: Surly Disc Trucker Build

I have all the parts and I am ready to build the bike. This is my first ebike build, so I am sure I will make mistakes and regret some of the decisions I made. I ended up buying a GMAC advanced PAS kit from Grin. I really liked the idea of an integrated torque arm and a standard 10mm axle as I wasn'...
