Re: Schottky Battery Paralell setup... How?

:!: That epoxy stuff...where did you get it and how much? :D This was black 2-part epoxy I got at our locaql Ace hardware for $3.99. I needed 2 of them. I think it said for use with steel, metal, etc. but i figured was just marketing and that it didn't really have any metal particles in it. When ha...

Re: Even Newer 4 to 24-cell Battery Management System (BMS)

So, my understanding is that with this relay in parallel to the charger's 120v line, the BMS control circuit would be switched on (via the board jumper) when the charger was turned on, CORRECT ??... and that if I used a Soneil 4808 SRF charger, I could leave it connected all the time to the battery...

Re: Even Newer 4 to 24-cell Battery Management System (BMS)

To be absolutely sure, you could use a DPDT relay and use one side for the control circuit and the other side to disconnect one leg of the charger output. In this case the contacts need to be rated higher than the charger output. Richard, thanks for all your tips, and especially this one! I like th...

Re: Even Newer 4 to 24-cell Battery Management System (BMS)

You could also use a small relay with a 120vac coil. The coil would be wired in parallel with the charger input so it activates anytime the charger is plugged into the wall. Richard, could you suggest a relay from Mouser that would do, like one of these: http://www.mouser.com/catalog/635/1717.pdf ?...

Re: Even Newer 16-cell Battery Management System (BMS)

Gary & Richard, Thanks for carrying the BMS design forward with the new ability to be able to turn off the charge circuit! This will be great for having my charger in the battery box, and not worring about generating unnecessary bypass heat (like all night) after the batteries are done charging. 2 Q...

Re: Even Newer 16-cell Battery Management System (BMS)

Sorry for the delay, but since Richard and I are looking into adding a feature to cut the charge current when all the shunts are fully on, I've held off submitting the "tear-off" layout. One way or another, I will tun something in on Monday, which should get them back before the end of the week. --...

About the TC54s: Does anybody know where to get other values, in small quantities, in a TO-92? Thanks, Patrick Patrick, Looks like Digikey's are non-stock, with a minimum of 2,000 to order, but small quantities can be had at Mouser: Here's your T0-92 package in 2.9v ,$.64 each: http://www.mouser.co...

Re: Even Newer 16-cell Battery Management System (BMS)

I'm not aware of any technical issues. For a totally enclosed solution, the heat has to still go somewhere. You may be better off using a lower shunt current (10 or 15 ohm resistors) to limit the heating. I plan on ordering the 15 ohm shunt BMS version to try to hold down the heat for my applicatio...

Re: Even Newer 16-cell Battery Management System (BMS)

Yes, if the charger voltage is high enough, the shunts will stay at their maximum current and dissipate a crapload of heat. If you get the charger voltage tweaked so the current drops to under 100ma (or whatever the trip point for the soniel is), then it will shut off at end of charge. There is a c...

Re: Even Newer 16-cell Battery Management System (BMS)

No, I haven't tried this, but I know the Soniel will change modes when the charging current gets down to about 100ma. The Soniel (at least the one I have) also has a voltage adjustment trim pot inside that can be adjusted. If the adjustment goes far enough, it should be possible to tweak it so the ...

Re: Even Newer 16-cell Battery Management System (BMS)

With something like a Soniel charger, if the voltage was set so the total string current drops to under 100ma when everything is charged up, the charger light would go green and drop the voltage output causing the cells to stop charging. To fechter: Have you actually tried this? I know Gary has a S...

Re: Even Newer 16-cell Battery Management System (BMS)

Question for Gary or fechter: After the BMS master LED comes on, indicating all cells are fully charged, would a supplying Soneil charger also turn to a green LED light to indicate end-of-charge and shut down? In other words, could the charging operation be set-it-and-forget-it ? or would you have t...

Re: charging lifepo4 with 4808srf

Here is a repost of Soneil 4808srf instructions for tweeking the voltage and amperage settings. The voltage can be upped from the factory 57.6 to 58.4v, which would for a 16cell a123 series would be 3.65v per cell. I have fould that it works best where cells (or groups of parallel cells) are matched...

They are 50A but 25A for each input, the diodes have two input one output, nicely setup for parallel connection. The application is for 3s2p of 18.5V (5 cell LiMn) packs each with BMS in circuit. My maximum amp draw appears to be 32A, and this would draw from two banks, so it seems sufficient. I ha...
