Re: Top 5 reasons against bikes - SOLVED

I generally get as much elbow room from drivers as I give myself. Trailers make lots of sense when there's no room in your life for another bike. An admitted advantage of trailers is when you're carrying one bag of sand. With the Xtracycle, it's easier to carry two bags. A long-john or bakfiets solv...

Re: Top 5 reasons against bikes - SOLVED

Ok: cargo: well honestly, i have not figured this one out yet. Rear rack + backpack are working well for shopping. That's the easiest one to solve and it doesn't even require an ebike. Get a bike trailer with a lockable, waterproof box. Zarges and the Carry Freedom Y-Frame are the perfect fit. http...

Re: Top 5 reasons against bikes - SOLVED

Yes it is a huge concern in rugby as well - off the top of my head I can think of several players who should not be playing. Probably worse in American Football though as the players are actively told to tackle with their heads under some misguided notion that a helmet will protect your head from c...

There's new research demonstrating, in rats, that something as simple as a tight shirt collar can reduce, or even prevent, brain concussions. http://www.guelphmercury.com/sports/article/619003--neck-bands-may-prevent-concussions That's brilliant, Zoot. Brain injury has become a hot topic in ice hoc...

Re: Top 5 reasons against bikes - SOLVED

Yes, fully agree with you on the dangers issue. That fender bender may have left you externally unmarked but I have no doubt it didn't do any wonders for your brain. The front part of our brain casing (which protects the frontal lobes) is full of sharp and jagged protrusions that cause brain damage...

Yes, you're right. Ah I'm sure it wouldn't take them too long to realise we're not though. :D
It undermines the credibility of the site being non-corporate and unbiased.

I can bring up the ~28 page thread of people yelling about corporate/business ownership if you like. But yes, i don't think i was alone in being certifiably pissed that an outside group was going to have influence here when we got bought out. Justin's a great guy, i just don't want a giant 'represe...

Re: What type of kickstand do you prefer?

The Xtracycle got a KickBack center stand after breaking two kickstands in four years. It was the missing piece. Errr, $140 for a kick stand? Ugh, there's gotta be a better (cheaper) way. It's a quality built accessory, in a niche market, that's designed to do what it does very well. A reliable, st...

An SKS Pletscher aka.ESGE, double legged kickstand was the only one that fit my other bike because the chain ring is so large.

Re: Single Speed Freak!!

Most of the top racers would have ridden fixed at some point in their career, because it was one of the classic old school coaching techniques to teach a rider how to pedal. It takes a lot to learn how to efficiently pedal around a circle. Most people just stomp up and down on the pedals. You can't...

Re: Single Speed Freak!!

For SS bikes, fixed are more fun, seem more efficient pedaling, they're really silent and truly simple. Mine was converted butted, brazed, 70's Swiss made 10 spd. dumpster find. Comfortable classic geometry. Not a track bike. I built it up Sept 2001. There weren't many riding around. It was catching...

Now that the stinkies have been truly handed their asses maybe they won't let the ebikes play any more.
. . .or they'll go gas free themselves for next year.
Luke's repeated stopping and starting, only to pass them and die so he could pass 'em again, must have aggravated a few riders.

Yeah, that's cool but I don't want to advertise that I'm exceeding the 32 kmh legal limit for ebikes. There was a guy wearing a prototype at a local "Bikes Inside" event probably sometime around late 2006 or early 07. We talked briefly. I remember him mentioning the positive acknowledgements that he...

We shouldn't have to dress like neon xmas trees to ride a bike. We can make ourselves and our machines as visible as possible but it doesn't do any good if some stunned turd isn't paying attention to what it's doing with a deadly weapon. The killers will walk free. Our social sickness makes us worsh...

Re: Different brake styles and performance

Le Béte had always been sorta sketchy in the brakes department. Loads and rain compounded the fun Now, at ~120# plus rider and cargo, the V-Brakes got too whimpy to trust at speed. The pads required more frequent replacement than before it was motorised. Without a disc mount on the old X5 there is n...

Re: Factory Longtail Cargobikes (12 so far)

My conversion to longtails happened ~Sept. ''05.
Xtracycle was the only game in town.

I loved the ride and convenience of having the cargo capacity.
I rode it three years before adding a motor that made it even more versatile.

Electrics is a natural match for cargobikes.

According to our city's latest report: Approximately 60,000 trips are made on a bike every day in the City of Vancouver. More than 3,500 cyclists commute to work downtown every morning, which is the equivalent to 65-75 full transit buses. About four percent of commuting trips in Vancouver are made b...
