Re: Windings shorted, fixable?

I used to work at a motor repair shop and we used to dip and bake motor winding's all the time. If you can get the short taken care of, just shellac it with some air dry stuff.

Thanks, I looked at Thud's printed fan, it is looks really nice. Is there not a ready made fan out there for these motors?

Re: Product Idea. Lights.

The problem with staying a doors distance away is, the car coming up on you might hit your handlebar with their mirror, run you down... The streets around San Diego are just not wide enough and I won't take the whole lane expecting the driver to be paying more attention to the road then their phone ...

Re: 1970s EV sets new 1/4 mile record

If the 1/4 mile vehicle (quickest accelerating) is going to try to use the idea that it's a street driven vehicle. It should be a production vehicle of so many units,: ..that would be the "Producction/stock" class....much slower .....otherwise it's only how much money that can be throw at it will d...

Re: RC motor torque.

My parts arrived yesterday from Value Hobby. They seemed to have really good prices and shipping was only a few days. They had stuff in stock too, which HobbyKing seems to carry no stock now. I hooked the motor up the the ESC (speed controller) and used a servo tester to energize it and test it. The...

Re: Repairing a commutator?

Yeah, I noticed that my Ebikes when run at stock voltage produce almost no heat. One bike, I run a 24 volt motor at 36 volts and it still stays cool to the touch. Only when I went to 60 volts did the 24 volt motors start to produce tons of heat and fail. It seemed kinda strange, when overvolting to ...

Product Idea. Lights.

Does anyone make a safety light that comes on automatically? I think that would be a nice feature. A light that knows when you using your bike and it comes on. Even during the day, I noticed the flashing ones draw attention to the bike and rider. It could just be a light with a motion sensor on it. ...

Re: Lots of Stop Signs, traffic...

I noticed that I hardly ever go over 20 MPH, by the time you get up to speed, I encounter another stop sign or light. I usually try to slow down enough so I can spot a cop if I'm going thru a stop sign, plus I look both ways twice to make sure I did not miss any other traffic. Anyways, that is what ...

Re: Repairing a commutator?

I wonder how hot these commutators can get.

The only reason I bothering to fix this motor is, Gaint LaFree Sports are pretty hard to find and parts are non-exsistant.

Re: The Chinese EV Market is Exploding

I just watched a TED talk about a hybrid trash truck. They used a turbine/electric/battery/electric drive. Turbine drives a alternator which charges a battery pack, which drives four motors on each rear wheel. Seems to make much more sense then a all electric drive. A all electric drive trash truck,...

Repairing a commutator?

My Gaint LaFree bike thru a commutator segment from running the 24 volt motor at over 50 volts. Too much heat and too many RPM's was probably the reason the segment came loose. I'm thinking some epoxy and dental floss might work. Dental floss would be used to wrap the commutator and epoxy would be u...

Lots of Stop Signs, traffic...

When building a Ebike, people talk a lot about maximum speed, but what do people build when there is a Stop Sign at every other block, lots of traffic, people... Does it make any sense to lower the gearing for better acceleration and trade off some speed. What other considerations when building a bi...

Re: RC motor torque.

I decided to try my hand at a RC build, here is my build: What I'm starting with: Giant LaFree bike. Comes with a transmission that has a ratio of 22:1 motor to the crank. From the crank (21 teeth) to the cassette on the rear wheel (34 teeth low, 13 teeth high). If I use the Top Speed and Gear Ratio...

Re: RC motor torque.

Not all outrunners fit that rule... DD hub motors are outrunners, they are low rpm (0-400rmp), and they work fine with a 1:1 ration to the wheel. ...it all depends on the detail design of the motor to suit its applicarion. RC motors were not designed to propel Ebikes. Are you saying a RC motor is a...

RC motor build, is this correct?

Before I make a motor purchase, I wanted to get some input on if this will work good or not. What I'm starting with: Giant LaFree bike. Re: Wheel diameter to speed/RPM chart

Here is a great calculator from "Electric Scooter Parts", there are actually two of them, a Top Speed and Gear Ratio Calculator for a non jack shaft type and a Jack shaft type. Just input the motor speed, gears and tire diameter, it gives you the gear ratio and speed. http://www.electricscooterparts...

Re: RC motor torque.

Well, there is so much to know about what motor to use for what application. As far as the outrunners, I know that they are not low RPM motors, so from what you are saying, they seem to be low torque and get all their power from the higher RPM's. That is why they need such crazy gear ratios to get t...

RC motor torque.

I was looking around at RC motors for my bike and I noticed that maximum torque is not reached at maximum RPM's. I found a site that did testing and the maximum torque readings were coming in at over one half to almost one third of maximum RPM's. So to me this means if you are picking out a RC motor...

Replacement motor for Gaint LaFree.

Well, I burned up the motor in my Giant LaFree. I have several LaFree's, the 2002 year model. The motor mounts to and drives through a transmission and then the rear seven speed cassette. I have two stock 24 volt bikes, two modified bikes one runs at 36 volts, the other I was running at 58 volts. We...

I started looking around, and I was surprised on how many places there were to buy brushes. They gave measurements and what the brush was made of. Anyone have any idea where I should start looking for replacement brushes for my Giant LaFree motor? This is a 2002 bike, so I'm sure there is nobody servicing these bikes.

As long as the brushes are close, I can sand them down to fit.

What's the big deal. That is the way society is, everyone cheats. The Government, industry, the people... They all cheat. The government came into my neighborhood and cheated on raising taxes. We had to go to court to get them stop cheating us on our taxes. Ebike riders come to this forum to see how...
