Re: How to upgrade 48V 1000w kids buggy?

30AH would be a good improvement. Between that and being able to safely use 80% of the capacity instead of 50% with SLA, you'd notice the difference. I don't know manufacturers well, but I will say, that if you want a SAFER lithium pack, with much less danger of fire, then I'd suggest a Ping LiFePo4...

Re: How to upgrade 48V 1000w kids buggy?

Just replacing the SLA (lead acid) batteries with a similar lithium pack will improve performance, by reducing voltage sag - assuming it's a good quality pack. You could try going with a somewhat higher capacity lithium pack alone, and if that doesn't produce enough speed, then go one of the routes ...

Re: Sondors x new bike the Metacycle

so as far as legal restraints related to power and speed it just has to go 60mph to be legal for the highway? Id think the requirements would be federal. 60 sounds like enough to get down the on-ramp and then a danger once on the highway. That's pretty much it, last time I checked. My ZEV 5000LA ju...

Re: Sondors x new bike the Metacycle

how does highway legality work for electric bikes? for gas they state must be 150cc or more. In New York, they have to be on an approved list of certified makes/models. There are three classes of what the state calls "mopeds" oddly enough: low speed (30 or 35MPH top speed) medium speed (4...

Re: Batteries.....

I think at the very least I need to charge my batteries outside, Keep in mind, though, that the easiest way to cause a battery fire, other than by shorting cells, is to charge it when it is in sub-freezing temps inside the case. Don't charge ice cold lithium batteries unless they are part of a car'...

Re: project e-trailer w solar charging

I agree with having the motor on the bike, and the battery or batteries in the trailer. I'd also put one motor on the trailer, for hills, with an electrical cable running from the trailer to the bike - that is much easier to engineer than a pusher setup. If you do keep the pusher setup, I suggest yo...

Looks like I've been mis-typecast once again. No flags, no leathers, no emblems that weren't painted onto the bike. I use as many accessories as will do me good, and just don't care what people think. Nothing stays on the bike that doesn't get used.

Re: Best grease for CYCLONE gearbox.

Don't be too shocked if you can't eliminate a substantial amount of noise, as it's the main drawback to planetary setups - aside from taking up space and weighing more! My Vectrix sounds like a banshee, and lots of people have tried to fix that with their VX-1s, and failed.

I'll just try to find a picture of my handlebar area, later. Hmm, no, that's harder. * One GREAT diamond-shaped mirror below the left side - it gives me a view of both sides of the road behind the bike. * Electric 'angry squirrel' horn. Imagine a 200lb squirrel yelling at you. * AA powered three mod...

About VisForVoltage: I participated there for years, and still stop in occasionally. I didn't get seriously into e-bikes until 2013, but I had both an e-bike and Oxygen Lepton in 2001. I somehow missed, though, both the site destruction and split. I've never known the site as anything other than wha...

Some hubmotors actually come with a second, backup set of phase wires and sensors, in case one of them fails. That was the setup on my old, crappy ZEV. In that case you only connect one set of them.

Re: Is Generic Lithium Charger overcharging LiFePO4 Battery?

Maybe. If it stops charging when they reach that voltage, and they then drop back to the safer range, then no. If it keeps them up there with a float charge, or if they don't drop back a little while after charging ends, then yes - get a charger with an adjustable finish voltage.

I guess what I'm asking is to confirm I understand correctly what "Standby Use" and "Cycle Use" means. I'm guessing that means the voltage reading while it's not on the charger (standby use) and while it is on the charger (cycle use), but I could be completely wrong. I just don'...

Thanks for chiming in. Can you talk more about your recommendation about "high enough charging voltage"? I've been doing this stuff for awhile but still don't know what I'm really doing half the time. I'm charging the 36v 9ah battery with a 36v 1.8amp charger. How would I increase the cha...

Re: How to read SLA battery label

The voltages vary by SLA battery type. IIRC, a starting battery has a significantly lower rest voltage than an AGM (absorbed glass matt), with a gel type falling between the two. Doesn't your charger have an auto shutoff, and switch to float mode, with a battery type switch? If not, and you need/wan...

Yes, cheap and rough, works fine until it doesn't.
Lithium batteries tend to fail after a few years, too. Expensive and rough. You did see that I got 10 years from 4 AGM batteries wired and charged in series in the Lepton, right...?

Re: How to charge (3) 12v SLA batteries in series

(Re: higher charging voltage) That's a definite no-no on sealed lead acid. Though less prone to burst into flames, overcharge can pop the vents. I'm talking about bulk charging, not finish charging. I guess I should have noted that. Anyway, this is the most common setup for Chinese and even higher s...
