Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

@rider119 you'll need a power supply or battery to power it with at least the minimum operating voltage, and basic wiring harness to connect your serial cable canbus and B+/B- leads pins to a couple of the harness pins to simulate key voltage. I've never tried to hook up one with ONLY those connecti...

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

There is a controller hardware specific requirement to make the gen 4 controller compatible with sin-cos encoders. So that's one place where there's a hardware specific requirement. I assume that's probably a similar requirement for both size 4 and 6 models.

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

@riwi77 haha yea that's a creepy feeling when she takes off. Honestly not sure what the differences are behind the scenes between the two DCF files, if there is one. I've only ever worked with my size 6, but there is a dcf compare tool in the software, which outputs a CSV file listing the difference...

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

Noise?

Check that not only are encoder, main battery leads and phase leads shielded, but absolutely all B- wires are shielded as well. (I assume your pack and controller are floating in comparison to frame)

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

@samv76 ... The true short answer is yes, the firmware can be reflashes to give you access to everything. The honest truth however is that if you have things to learn about the Sevcon and also weren't at a point to truly know if you can use a two channel scope, then my advice is that you honestly do...

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

Yes a 2 channel works fine, that's all I had. Just takes some thought and good note taking to keep organized. The 4 channels let you see everything on one screen, but every measurement in that app note can be done just two channels at a time.

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

@jamo96 you might not get away from the low speed whine completely, but I'm thinking it'll have to do with oscillation in the Id/Iq circuit. When you say you got rid of the hesitation, was that from changes in ramp rates or PI gains? You might need to tighten up the PI control a bit more to get rid ...

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

As someone who's fought with a gen4 for two years off and on evenings and weekends to get a single prototype running, I assure you I understand the frustrations with not having technical support from Sevcon. But that's exactly why we should continue supporting the product on this forum in my opinion...

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

Sorry I edited this post a couple times as I was remembering how thing went down for me in the end. @2xhp, try spinning the motor in the other direction, or swapping the M2 and M3 leads at the controller and trying again. Ingo's comment about flipping sin/cos suggests the motor's turning direction w...

Motorcycle Conversion Kit Survey (4 Qs)

Hey folks! I've developed a complete motorcycle conversion kit, fully isolating the pack and housing all needed components in enclosures with simple mounts and simple connections. My first prototype is built and street legal to prove the technology works, but now I want to reach out and find out how...

Re: Sevcon Gen 4 Errors and Solutions thread

You mean that you have a Gen4 size 4 available instead of a size 6? Yea, you'll have less torque available because the controller will have a lower peak amperage available, holding all other things constant. Do you have the ability to increase your pack voltage? The gen4 size 4 can come in a higher ...

Re: Sevcon Gen 4 Errors and Solutions thread

Voltage is the throttle assembly's output voltage that the controller is reading, and the value is the corresponding throttle value as a percentage of full throttle (applicable torque/speed setpoint depending on your application) from 0 to 1. Also worth applying a little safety factor on your low en...

Re: Sevcon Gen 4 Errors and Solutions thread

Just thought I'd step in again since I last commented about the noise issues I was having and how it was finally diagnosed. 1. Contactor coil noise at 24v, running a 100v pack. Just like so many comments earlier, the PWM'ing is sending a lot of noise through the system. For me, it looked like it was...

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

The speed outputs would be easily done via canbus by setting your TPDO's. There's a google-able sevcon app note on how to program TPDO's. If you need an analog output, I'm not sure what options you have, I haven't looked into that. Maybe an alternate component on the canbus can output analog signals...

Re: how to program a sevcon gen4

You'll have a much easier time with an oscilloscope, but it sounds like your encoder is something like 180 degrees out of alignment. Read this: https://www.e-kart.fr/images/stories/technique/SEVCON/sevcon-app-note-pmac.pdf If the link doesn't work, google for "sevcon app note". It explains...

Re: Sevcon Gen 4 Errors and Solutions thread

Hey Mark! Well hopefully you're making progress at least. I'm sure it'll come out alright in the end of the tech is at least familiar with the sevcon Gen 4. In the last couple days, I found that my D-axis proportional gain was way too low. As soon as I brought that up, I was able to extract a ton mo...

Re: Sevcon Gen 4 Errors and Solutions thread

Hey Mark, I'm sure there are many things that could cause your error, but I have been dealing with similar symptoms on a Parker GVM motor (3ph PMAC, sin/cos encoder) and gen4 size 6 controller combo that I've 90% narrowed down to EMI to the motor encoder. While any of the experts can jump in to make...
