Subtropical Depression One Forms in the Central Atlantic
The Atlantic hurricane season gets off to an early start...again
By Kurt Korte
Published:April 19, 2017
Official forecast for Subtropical Depression One from the National Hurricane Center
For the sixth time in the past ten years we have a tropical system in the Atlantic prior to the official start of the season on June 1st.
Subtropical Depression One formed this morning from a non-tropical low we've been monitoring in the central Atlantic the past several days. The system is significantly removed from the US East Coast -- around 1700nm from the Outer Banks -- so that is going to really limit the amount of surf we see directly from the system.
The outlook for the Caribbean is a bit more favorable and we've already seen swell generated by the non-tropical low over the past several days. Swell generated by Subtropical Depression One will continue over the next several days as the system is expected to drift generally towards the north before becoming absorbed by a larger extratropical system in around the next day or two.
While Subtropical Depression One isn't expected to send any appreciable surf towards the US East Coast we do expect the extratropical low that absorbs the system to interact with high pressure over the north Atlantic and produce swell in the coming days. For exactly how this will impact the surf outlook later this week, over the weekend and into early next week check out the local forecasts for your area. In general, here are the positives and negatives when it comes to Subtropical Depression One:
Positives
•Swell generated by the system will set up continued surf for the Caribbean
•Some swell for the US East Coast but mainly after the system becomes absorbed by a larger extratropical system later this week
•No landfall expected
Negatives
•Weak system which will limit the size of the surf across the Atlantic basin
•Located well offshore from the US East Coast which will limit surf size
•Expected to dissipate in the next 36hrs
Unless there are significant changes to the strength and projected track of Subtropical Depression One this will be the last update on the system.

Around 80 here today. Perfect biking weather. The place finally dried out, but the back roads are in bad condition from all the rain. Now the dang pollen is getting me. And when all this vegetation dries out, were in for a bad fire season.

Pretty odd forecast for this late in the season this far south. We'll take some as it has dried out and the fire season has begun. Ten to twenty percent chance. Likely usually means at least 50%, but they're not saying.

Is still 92F outside right now at 1020pm.

Expected to be about 77f for a low, which will happen around dawn.

Saturday's supposed to get to 94F, which probably means 100F. But it's also going to be windy, 20-25mph, 35mph+ gusts. Is already breezy with gusts.

Sunday's supposed to only be 74F, and might get to raininess by Monday.

A 20 percent chance of rain before 11am. Partly sunny, with a high near 69. South wind 5 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Saturday did indeed get to 100F, though it was supposed to be nearly 10 degrees cooler than that according to that morning's prediction.

Sunday started out with a prediction of 73F, and eventually got to almost 78F.

Today was supposed to be about 79F, and it's peaked around 84, then dropped a few degrees once it started getting a bit cloudy.

The rain predictions for this morning evaporated sometime last night, and moved to at best a 10% chance for sometime this afternoon. Then tonite there's a 60% chance, with 50 for Tuesday, 30 that night, and 20 for Wed.

The last of the rain chances? :? New precipitation season starts July first.
Thursday Night
A slight chance of showers after 11pm. Increasing clouds, with a low around 57.
Friday
A slight chance of showers before 11am. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 67.

Is in the 100's here now, probably to stay, with nighttime lows in the 70s, and going up, probalby be in the 80s at night in the next couple weeks or less, when those had been the *daytime* temperatures just weeks (or less) ago.

Yuck.

It's been in the mid-high 100's F last couple days; today it was almost 107F, and it was still 96F when I got home at 10pm. :( It's still 92F out there an hour and a half later. :(

OTOH, I can now make really good dark suntea. :/

Cooler today and tomorrow, warming up next week. 8) LNEMLCAF (Late Night/Early Morning Low Clouds And Fog) May Gray through June Gloom, typical weather for this time of year. A little cooler than average temperatures.
