I was pleasantly surprised by a substantial incursion of Honey Bees today. First time they made up the major percentage of pollinators! While High Tunnel was fairly well buttoned up, only access was the slight space where the roll up sides had a bit of slack space against the end walls.
The Honey Bees swarmed the flowering Stevia plant!?
Still plenty of flowering Tomatoes, Peppers and Eggplants!Being, pretty much, November, am considering trimming flowers to prevent new fruits, so plants will concentrate growth to existing fruitage.

Greenhouse Progress - Week 11

End of October! Implemented reduced watering for Tomatoes to address cracking-splitting problem, 1st week. Tomatoes a bit wilted, so will adjust slightly. May move Basil-mato Monster into Pantry to host Halloween?

Freeze-snow forecasted for this weekend so will button things up.
Next 2 weeks with most nights below freezing!

Basil-mato Monster suffering from Basil flowering, so will trim him back , some more, will likely try rooting some cuttings.

Cherry Tomato growing out of single block hole (2 deep). Let grow wild, so has many sucker-stems pushing into the rafters. Doing well due to additional fertilizer. It is heavily fruited with several ripe Tomatoes harvested. Will not prune flowers on this plant in as a "produce till frozen" test item. There have been Winters mild enough that High Tunnel might have protected crops till Spring? Wait and hope and see for this year?

This bed prepped for Pepper transplants before the weekend.

Switch, next to door turns on 3 18w LED strip lights along peak. Each 18w LED puts out near the same light as a 150w Halogen. While output is at ideal 6500K color for growing, light is not intense-concentrated enough for effective growth. If weather is moderate enough that plants survive into Winter may add additional Solar panel, battery and lights, on timer to provide additional hours of "daylight". 18w LED = 3.6w light 14.4w heat

LED = 20% efficient 10w light 40w heat
CFL = 10% efficient 10w light 90w heat
Halogen = 3% efficient 10w light 323w heat
Incandescent = 2% efficient 10w light 490w heat

Saturday - Tuesday watering was too long a period, Tomatoes appear somewhat wilted. Will adjust with light sprinkle on Sundays or Mondays. Watering scheduled regulated to Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday as daily watering blamed for Tomato splittings.

Had Ice on the birdbaths in the garden this morning.
Only the hardiest still growing. Swiss Chard, Onions, Beets ...

Was 35ºF at 10am ... 70ºF in the greenhouse(with morning Sun).
Buttoned down the greenhouse:
Taped plastic over the vents in the peaks
sealed the roll up sides by screwing 1/2" hose through ends of roll up to clamp them tight
adjusted sweep on storm door

Not supposed to reach 50ºF, in the foreseeable future, so cooling not a concern.
Forecast has down near the teens this weekend so will test my charcoal idea. long thin charcoal fire for extended warmth.

Have Chicken feed trough but thinking charcoal fire inside a heavy steel pipe might work better, easier to regulate air for prolonged gentler warmth?
Target will be a burn from midnight till 9am~

Running 3 - 12V 40w heating elements from solar panel into 250gallon water tank to store solar energy against nightly cold. Might resort to grid electric heat assist for the forecasted 19ºF Friday night.
Time to empty and upturn the outside rain barrels, try to save the goldfish.
Garden has Peas still growing and flowering, not sure anything left for pollination though. Highs expected to stay in the 30s or low 40s for the next 2 weeks!

Running 1750w of electric heat and a fan to distribute it. Hoping to keep everything alive through the night, tomorrow colder, not getting above freezing and into the teens at night.

Will be harvesting out for tomorrows distribution including Green Tomatoes (fried green Tomatoes is a hick delicacy)
Tomatoes with some color to be harvested and stored in brown paper bags with an apple each. Ripe Apples exude a ripening hormone that induces quick ripening.

Harvested out about 120lb of Tomatoes this morning (mostly green but many with some color for "ripening trials") and several pounds of Peppers.
Barely got started on ripe Tomatoes harvesting from August 3 plantings of sets and rooted suckers, will be planning on early July Tomato starting for next year. Not to be wasteful, will have 1st High Tunnel plantings of Green Onions, Lettuce, Beets etc in ~March,
Then transplants of Peppers in early May. Early transplant into rich, warm raised beds should provide strong growth and extended growing season for a bountiful harvest.
Plan on making extensive use of block holes for early crops and herbs etc.
Might also try an early crop of determinate Tomatoes. (ripen all at once allowing prompt removal and 2nd season planting.)

We have longer growing seasons around here, but shorter days in mid summer then you. However, early growing is a + in my book. I do the same thing. Let the rains start the first plants, and the follow up later with a second crop.

As stated, Paper bags work well for green tomatoes. Might even want to stick a banana in there to help with the ripening.

Sounds like you pulled in a fine harvest this year.

Good growing!

Tried to distribute the ripe and, as much as possible, the Green Tomatoes.
Everything with some color was matched and placed in separate bags with an Apple, or 2.
Variety was from nearly ripe to the leftovers at green, with no color.
Will report on degree of success and time required from each degree of initial ripeness.
Some green were at 2lb weight! Definitely need to start them earlier!

Bananas supposed to work better than Apples?

Did leave a dozen or so Cherry Tomato plants, with full crop, in case they can survive the next cold week.

Greenhouse Progress - Season 1

Down in the teens, too much cold! High Tunnel not designed for prolonged freezing, effective for frosts and brief cold ...
Basil all frozen and many of the Tomatoes and Peppers were killed, everything except some Herbs took damage.

High Tunnel provided a 5-6 week extended Fall growing season. If we can combine with a similar Spring enhancement ...
Should be able to plant frost resistant crops in March, add Tomatoes, Peppers, Eggplant etc in April, harvest Radishes, Green Onions, Lettuce as other crops start taking up space.
Peppers will benefit most, if I keep intensive watch on Tomato diseases, should have a wonderful harvest. Though I do believe Tomato splitting was due to heat-cold fluctuations, rather than excessive water. Early Spring not a concern as no fruit, Summer will allow full opening of sides with occasional night closings, but will implement 2 peak thermostatically controlled vent fans, 1st set to 85ºF and the 2nd at 90ºF ? Will use arrays of low power 120mm 12V computer fans, powered by solar panels, of course. Fans only needed when Sun is shining. Will likely modify settings for hot Summer nights.

Also toying with the idea of solar heat storage to moderate temperature fluctuations. Methods might vary from painted black milk jugs filled with water to fluid transferred accumulation into storage barrels?

Not too hot, tomato flowers don't set well over 85°. Too hot, and tomatoes don't ripen.

"Pollen "dies" quickly at 80ºF+". 85ºF and 90ºF Thermostats for fans will be set near roof, leaving temp at plants noticeably lower, with natural (unpowered) convection for milder temps.

Having suffered multiple nights in the single digits Fahrenheit, everything except perennial herbs should be dead, will allow a few days for plants to desiccate before removing to "rough compost" heap. Saturday forecasted to be up near freezing with full Sun anticipated, nice trial for Winter "Spa day". Will need to pull all plants, and intend on refilling beds with 2018 leaves composted with this years vegetables. Hoping that continuing composting matter, combined with Sun on sheltered beds can preserve their Earthworm populations. At the least, composted leaves are a viable source of Earthworm eggs for a new Springtime repopulation. Might carefully try to find the monster worms I recently moved inside with the additional compost matter and preserve in my basement?

Warehouse located "grow tower" being put into use to produce a crop of Stevia and Basil plants for Winter distribution. Natural, unprocessed, sweetener for hot Winter beverages and Basil for aromatherapy. Also trying to keep my growth Spirit alive. Did save a nice collection of small ornamental Marigolds into pots for Winter delight, will have to investigate if additional light required for continuous blooming.

Also, upgrading Food Pantries computer systems from old Win 7 to Business grade Dells with Win 10, SSD HDs and 16gb DDR4 ram. Overkill(?), but they have been suffering along with Win 7 (obsolete), 4gb ram (pitiful) and Norton Internet Security (ram and processor hog) with Verizon DSL for 6 computers and free guest wifi. Already upgraded Verizon DSL (3mb/s) to Spectrum (100mb/s) internet. Will buffer Guest wifi with separate router through a "child safe" DNS server. Keeping busy and involved till Spring?
