Why Donate??

I completely disagree with Will Newton in Fechters call to donate thread. All of our fearless leaders on this forum have exhibited selflessness and graciousness at every turn. If Richard deems the BMS project advantageous to the whole community, that's all I need to hear. Even though I don't plan on needing it, when I do make the move to Lipo, it will be there. In the coming years, every ebike will have this feature. Also, try going to any other forum and you will be inundated with advertisement at the top, bottom and in the damn middle of the page!! So let's keep the powers that be happy before they start considering advertising space, which I'm sure most would pay to go without.

What do you guys think?

If it wasnt for endless sphere I would not have a working ebike yet! And now I NEED a bms bad! SO I will try to donate for sure!

I probably would have an e-bike if it wasn't for this site. I'd give it a 25% chance that I'd be happy with it but it would be there :)

If you dont want to donate, dont donate.

If you would like to, then do so.

If you want to ask questions, then do it.

If you dont want to be involved in this, then ignore it.

same as most every thing else here.

my two watts worth

http://visforvoltage.org/ seems to be doing fine without "donations". I am here to share my experiences "free" of charge and that is the way it should be. If you are truely selfless then seek advertisers to fund your love for this hobby. Why does a hobby have to mean making lots of money? This will really be my last contribution to this forum. good luck!

nobody has to donate, nothing forced here.. but some do want to and the question has been asked many times before " Where can i send a few dollars in apreciation... " .. so there it is !

I personally prefer an idle thread over google adds in the middle of postings and banner adds etc..

Alot of very intelligent people on this forum, retired EE's and so forth, what if someone has a great idea but no money to make it happen ? we can/may all benefit from some unique ebike related gizmo's .. !

it would be neat to have a fund raising thread on a per project basis where a fixed donation "price" is paid up front and exchanged for 1 unit of product later.

it would be fairly easy to budget the "unit costs" by getting an initial headcount of interested parties (to break even with just the "donations")

kind of like the astro group buy but more streamlined and systematic.

I guess I'm not a of my word  corrections, this will be my last day posting here
Hmmm...intelligent people with cleaver, original ideas??? There are many, but I choose to contribute to the ones that actually put their money where their mouth is and devote their time and money to turn their idea into reality.

No product in hand=no contribution by me!

Well, I know that the only things that come free in life are scams and troubles, ain't nothin worthwhile come freely. $50/yr doesn't cover the expenses and it's either ads or donations, you guys pick. When i do crazy google searches, somehow visforvoltage never pops up, but often endlessphere is right there at the top.

Ypedal,
It would be nice to have a say in how things are run to keep it democratic though. Maybe a donation of $20 /yr allows you a say in how project funds are doled out. I also think that a counter or graphic that spun, like a wheel or electric motor, everytime a donation is made would be cool. Sorta like a bell you ring. A cowbell!! We need more cowbell.

I don't have much money, but I have a little and I'm going to make a small donation toward the cause. And to be frank, I don't really give a damn what Fetcher does with it. It is well worth it for the knowledge I've gained here in the last couple of years.

I know Fetcher isn't the only one who has contributed content to this forum, but he is the administrator so I suppose it does make sense for for him to to administrate our donations.

Remember, You don't have to donate, so no reason to be rude about it.

Now where did that come from. did you also see that Saturday Night Live? Cristopher Walken and will farrell

In my opinion asking for donations to keep the site up and running is OK but asking for donations for personal projects is NOT. My preference however would be for the owners of this site to simply sell advertising like every other site does to generate income, just no pop-up ads please. To show my support I clicked on the three links at the bottom of the main page (for the first time ever) to hopefully boost the ad revenue by a few pennies

A business model you may like to look at is at www.bobistheoilguy.com That board specializes in motor oil information.

He has sponsors: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=60&Itemid=68

And accepts donations from board members. Those that donate get an icon below their names that show a US Greenback in the amount they contributed to his board.

Just some info that I hope might help.

Ad rates unless you click on _and_ buy stuff are pretty thin, almost non-existent, on sites I have been involved with. Someone posting some pics on a for sale thread saved me lots of frustration and some $$ sooo I made a little donation to keep their post up :D

So what your saying is that you dont see anyone here developing things on thier own dime and time ?

really?

If you cant recognize the work it takes to keep this site as it is then personally i do believe your stuff is a "complete farse"

hes not demanding money for extra privileges
its a private site he can do what he wants
dont like were the money goes ? contact your interest and donate directly

Yea Gad, Can't we just settle down a little. I have no problem to donate to the cost of the forum but do if a portion goes to a personal project. dennis, your a "Tuff Shit" old fart, but, you have made some real contributions to this forum. I for one would hate to see you go. We all have a choice on this, either you do or you dont. Please, lets keep it cool. M2c

I'd like to see a reduction in bitching and an increase in donating.

Especially from the forty or more regular 1000+ post members.

I've dropped in AU$55 (US$50).

Who's next?

Donate money to spite Dennis and support E-S at the same time. I feel better about my donation already.

if i had money i would totally donate. it sucks being a poor college student because of lack of funds. but i did have money, i would fork over what i have. this site has thought me a lot on the topic of e-bikes and other similar vehicles. without discovering this site, i would not have thought twice about powering my bike by electricity. i just have a whole new appreciation for electricity. so in time ill make my donation when im saving tons of money riding my e-bike to school and not taking public transportation.

a hobby is a hobby is a hobby...if you expect to get paid, go get a job like every other working grunt out there in the real world. All my rants make no sense I knoz. :D

You seem quite worked up over a suggestion of donation, with full disclosure of where the funds go no less!! Fetcher is part owner of the site, so he can do as he pleases. The site is still free to everybody, so it just seems that you are mad because Fetcher is going to gain some project cash here.

And who defined this as only a hobby? Even further, who says you can't make money from your hobbies? I have been self employed for 5 years now, with nothing but a hobby is a hobby is a hobby to pay my bills. I grunt 60 hours a week in my "fake world", and still manage to have fun and get paid. Sounds kinda like a rapper or porn star's job, maybe you should go tell them to get real jobs too.

incoherent is right.. geeez...

Seriously folks, there is absolutely no need to be negative about this. No hidden agendas and no selfish money grabs either.. I have faith in fechter to make the right decisions and spend any potential money wisely.

To the original Question " Why Donate ? "

Why Not ?

When we opted to get together and buy Knightmb a CA meter , i donated, when alot of us chipped for Doctorbass's battery tester thing i donated, when fechter needed an HV controller to iron out the bugs in the throttle box , again i put in my share.. etc etc etc.. i'm not rich, but i'm not poor either.. I DO however take pleasure in helping others when and how ever i can. so i do.

I refresh this forum 100's of times a day, slow loading pages filled with banners and what not are not my idea of a good thing. This donation method is one option, there are others i suppose but hey.. whatever.

I have a hard time understanding the reluctance and negative attitude towards a good thing. I've been part of this forum pretty much from the start and love this place. Except when i read crap like the nay sayers are posting above... like mamma always said. if you can't say something nice.. :|
