it doesnt matter .... spark a revolution
So endless sphere has had a problem recently with spambot infiltrating its registration system...and they are spamming the hell out of us with porn sites etc.

So it has been proposed that ES change its registration system to a custom q@a...

Can you guys think of any good questions which will foil a spambot or even a human spammer with limited english from setting up an account...but will be pretty easy for a new user wanting to sign up for es?

Here is an example of some...but the more we have the better...

A: Electric

How about, a few questions that mean they have to have a building-block concept gained from lurking before they can post.

What 2 factors determine the amount of voltage drop across any conductor (including batteries).

If everyone had to lurk until they could answer those basic core concepts, we would be bogged down with a hell of a lot less pointless newb threads, and people would be posting a lot less completely wrong info to people.

Actually the idea is to fool a computer, but not a human. The answers need to be very obvious to a human.

Humans also register as spammers, so no system will be perfect.

I like Luke's questions. No dummies allowed

Ask the questions in German, it will help to make us in the USA more educated and multi lingual!

its not like anyone has to know the answers...all they gotta do is know how to google...

I agree there should be some kind of "buy-in" to post on ES..and it would have an added benefit of obliterating all spammers....human and computer.

And lurkers could still lurk.

I'd prefer Liveforphysics' questions and method. ;) If we're a democracy I vote for that.

But failing that, Q&A like the others would work.

Some of the questions below would be answerable incorrectly even by experienced people, because there are multiple correct answers.

What is the third letter in the word " Bicycle "?
If you intended to include the space in the quotes, then the third letter in the quote is actually "i", not the expected "c".

A big 2 wheeled machine with a motor on it is called a _____cycle?
Bi or Motor fit equally well, for a single-word answer.

How many hand grips come on a bicycle?
Some don't have any, though the usual answer would be two. Some comfort handlebars might have four (or more), for different riding positions.

What do you sit on top of when you ride your bicycle?
Saddle, seat, chair, bench, etc. All valid answers, and there are others.

What is a 2 person bike called?
Tandem is typically used, but doesn't really apply when it's a sociable (side-by-side) two-seater (as tandem is one-in-front-of-the-other). Some do still call those tandems, but not everyone does. (I wouldn't)

What goes on the outside of a rim?
Rim tape. Inner tube? Tube? No, wait, I know this... Tire? ;)

What material is a bicycle tire made of?
Rubber, nylon, and I wont' go into the ones of multiple materials.

Protects your hands from falling and keeps them warm.
I'm afraid I don't know what this is; as the only thing I have seen to keep hands from falling is a sling. :?

If you want to go faster twist the _____________. (rhymes with bottle)
My first thought was gearshift, though the latter part implies you want "throttle".

the little silver thing that you open a lock with.
Mmm...most of mine aren't silver, but rather brass (both in color and in content). I'd change that to "metal", since very few are plastic. Though I guess most of my lock-cutting tools are silvery. :p

powers a bicycle (rhymes with rotor)...
My first thought was "legs" but obviously you mean motor...

bicyclists #1 enemy...3 letters...(rhymes with star).
I would have said "traffic", though I think you are expecting "car".

A sphere is the same shape as a bicycle _________(rhymes with steal)
I am pretty sure you are expecting "wheel" here, but I would have been wanting to use "bearing", because a wheel is not the same shape. It took me several minutes to figure out the likely expected answer.

The eastern country where most ebikes and electronic devices are made...home to the last summer olympics...
You'd want to name the year, as that question wouldn't be good for much longer otherwise. ;)

First part of body that should hit ground in bike crash...(rhymes with sand)....also it twists your throttle.
I would never answer this the way you're expecting, because I would never want to put my hands out for a crash; great way to break things I need. ;) Although it *is* often the part that does hit first.

"What colour comes after yellow in the spectrum?"
From which direction? ;) I tend to think Amber or Orange when asked like that, and so would probably get that wrong. Some thought makes me figure you are thinking of green, though.

I just wanted to make the point that because people think differently (yes, I am much more different than most), we'd need to pick questions with unambiguous answers, or use multiple-choice answers, or be able to recognize a number of answers as correct. ;)

Amberwolf, You are lucky you are a ebiker and not crosswordpuzzler  I can imagine you the type sending an angry letter into the puzzle creator every week....but your point is well taken...and i agree that we should go with lukes approach....maybe a little lighter handed...but with google any question is answerable to the determined wanna be ESer.

I was thinking about the multiple possible answers when i threw in the rhyme hints...makes it simple.

Oh and y-pedal gets credit for the 3rd letter in bicycle...2 guys have called that one out already....and knightmb liked that one!

what this thread needs by the way is crossword puzzle guy... definitely not me...any crossword puzzle guys out there?

Let me take some more swings:

What geometric shape is bicycle frame traditionally?

Car batteries in USA are usually 12_______? (rhymes with moats)

Bicycles that are not belt driven are driven with a _________. (rhymes with pain)

To lubricate your chain you should apply _________ (think middle east)

Turn signals on a bicycle should be ______________ (think: sick bird) :D (did you get it ill Eagle?)

This is fun you guys should try some....

If it's just aimed at humans the questions should be simple, just prove they can read like:

What color was the green firetruck? _____________

A computer would guess red since red is the predominate color of firetrucks in the USA.

I have seen websites that ask: Are you a human type yes if you are?

Simple and they get the job done with no weird guessing.

OK, tell me how either "hub motor," or "great deal of exertion" rhymes with "pain".

Posting advertising here unrelated to electric vehicles is called ____________, and the people who do it are called __________.

Spammers should have their __________ cut off.

GeoTracking is the process where spammers are located and __________.

Websites that pay spammers sometimes experience ____________.

I'm with Luke and Amberwolf.

I think it should be pretty difficult to have the ability to post. A test with related info is a great idea. I wonder how much time and bandwidth is wasted by people that need to do some searching and reading instead of posting? If I remember right (lots of forums!), I lurked here and read for a loong time before I ever posted. It's a sign of respect to the community to get caught up as much as possible before asking questions. Once we have good FAQ's in place, there should be no reason noobs shouldn't be able to pass the basic test. Until then, searching works fine......unless you're against sorting through all of the useless and duplicated threads posted by folks that didn't care to search first or learn on their own  . Testing potential contributors for basic knowledge about electronics will greatly reduce the amount of pointless threads and save the bandwidth for those with something to offer. All of the noob stuff has been covered to death here. The new development stuff is what's most important and I have a feeling that those able to contribute substantially to new development will have no problem passing the test.

IMHO, questions should be easy. we want the uneducated masses to be able to ask their questions, and most of them won't have a clue what a throttle, volt, or spoke wrench are. and most won't know that a tire isn't sphere shaped, either :D Basicly, we've become the default place for noobs to come and ask their questions about Ebikes. We therefor represent Ebikes to the world. Making it hard to post here won't do anything for helping to spread understanding and acceptance of Ebikes to the world.

We've got to keep in mind that half the world's population is below average inteligance.

So simple questions, like:

Please type The Answer in the space provided.

What punctuation symbol ends this sentance?

Is their a picture of a horse riding a dolphin on this page?

How many letters are in the mail box?

A truck leaves Denver going west at 60mph, and at the same time a bicycle leaves Florida going north at 12mph, And makes 23 stops for beef jerky and Slurpiees. Don't you hate questions like this?

You just lurk a bit until you can pass the entry exam to post. It's not like you can't suck every bit of knowledge from the site still, you just won't have as many people posting up the same basic concept-fail threads that we currently have.

A spelling test would've blocked some of our best contributors.

The basic electrical concepts as a filter are tempting, tho... maybe a watered-down version of Luke's suggestions:

The formula [ V * A = W ] represents: _________ * ________ = ___________.

The basic unit of electromotive force (or electrical potential) is the ______________.

The basic unit of resistance is the __________.

The basic unit of current is the ________.

Watts are a measure of _________.

Watt-Hours are a measure of ________.

The formula [ I = V / R ] represents: _________ = _________ /__________.

etc.

too complicated imo..

There is alot of diversity on the sphere, this is good, we have some really intelligent people who know lots about various thing, like wood-working or the 1000's of other areas of interest imaginable, but have no clue what a watt or an ohm is, the Q&A stuff should be really easy and simple stuff anyone can figure out without too much head scratching or stuff that has too many possible ways to write as an answer.. we want to keep the autobots out, not the humans .. 8)

I wouldn't make em answer all the Qs, just one randomly selected from the list.

Most the infiltration is from humans... prisoners etc. forced to spam by keepers.

The real problem to consider is modern human spammers of way below average intelligence and limited English, will get through any basic captcha stop system, and then set the bots loose after they have successfully registered.

There are three levels of protection:

1. Captcha system that stop robots...

2. q@a that stops human spammers of limited english and intelligence.

3. q@a that will stop almost every new user without some kind of reading and google searching....

I would vote for 2 1/2.

Any person who really wants to use the sphere should be able to google the answers pretty easily...

I think there should be a sphere "buy in"....or we should atleast try some harder questions and see if we get less new users/spam....

I think just slightly tricky questions would do the trick...and an email now box in case the noob is not capable of passing the quiz, he can email fechter for help... :D :D Depending how slammed fechter gets with emails will decide if the system stays or not....but how do we know if dont try?

Fechter himself says a single test is worth a thousand opinions? Why not put to the test some tricky captcha questions?
