ES Site Maintenance and Upgrades, Oct 22nd - 30th

Post by justin_le » Oct 20 2012 7:45am

This is a heads up that we are planning to tackle some overdue upgrades and minor changes to the Endless-Sphere board in the coming week. This includes updating the back end bulletin board software, improving the functionality in areas like search and attachments, adding a better mobile interface, reorganizing the structure of a few forum categories etc. As part of this process, there will be some scheduled downtime where the active ES site will not be accessible. MrVass will post the exact times but the expectation is that they would last for 1-2 hours with the first happening this coming Tuesday Oct 23rd at 12am PST.

One of the items on our agenda is a new landing page for endless-sphere.com. What we would love to have is a collage of images and build pics from the many inspiring projects that have transpired over the years on this forum. So if YOU happen to have a great collection of pictures in your name which you would like to see included on the new ES homepage, then post a link here with the related build threads so we can consider them for inclusion. If you are not comfortable having images you've posted to ES show up on the homepage, then no need to do anything. We'll only work from those with explicit consent.

Hey guys, this is going to be great. We hope in the end to keep the list dynamic so that at people can have an easy link for submitting new pictures for inclusion into the homepage collage and that way it will always stay current too. However, until then the more submissions the merrier, so keep it coming folks.

If you want a chance for your projects to show up on the ES homepage then simply let us know here and include links to your best project/build threads.

i would like for the top of the front page to feature a number of pictures from your across Canada trip. i don't think there is anything that grabbed our attention and interest more than your trip then.

we argue about motors and cheap chinese suppliers and how fast and who has the best build but more of us followed your thread then than any other thread since. except for Xyster's. maybe.

i also would like for you take responsibility for our freedom from external ads here by having a small note somewhere attached to the title page mentioning how this place is "sponsored by Grin Technology, ebikes.ca" or something similar.

thanks a lot for your sacrifice, but it needs to be acknowledged in a simple manner rather than all the suck up notes from your fans in their signature line.

Okee, we will put some of those in the mix too. Actually, it brings up a good point that very few of the build pics suggested to date have any actual people in them, so playing around with these seems a bit lifeless and dry as a homepage collage, you don't get the sense of the awesome community that's here.

So maybe I'll refine the request a little bit and ask for links to threads that have pictures of people building / hacking / and most importantly _riding_ their ebikes! EVGrins not required, but certainly preferred ;-) That would help give the thing a more personal touch, and also give something of a face to the community.

Summary of Upgrades from recent server update

Post by justin_le » Oct 26 2012 3:45am

Hey guys, forum is back online and MRVass has successfully rolled in some of the things that are on our agenda. The 4 apparent on the front-end are:
  1. Google Search: You will notice now with all styles that there is a small checkbox under the search field allowing you to use the google search engine rather than the default search for the site. The results are returned as though you searched from google in the first place, but at least it makes this option more convenient to pull up when the phpBB search isn't working for you. We do still plan to improve the internal phpBB search functionality (by allowing 2 and 3 letter words for instance) but have not done that yet.
    Google Search.gif
    Google Search.gif (4.34 KiB) Viewed 12169 times
  2. Post Revisions: You will notice too that any time a post has been edited now, you will be able to click and view the full edit history. Everyone will still be able to edit and control how their final posts appear in the thread, but it won't be possible to play revisionist history and modify the intent or tone of an original post without that being apparent.
    Post History.gif
    Post History.gif (2.04 KiB) Viewed 12169 times
  3. Tapatalk: At the request of a handful of users, we have enabled the Endless-Sphere forum with the tapatalk mobile app for those who need to frequently access the forum from a portable device. Tapatalk is a paid ($2.99) download, and we had to go to some length to prevent pop-up messages from appearing when you visited ES on a mobile browser without it installed. But other than that it seems pretty solid.
  4. Mobile Skin: For those who don't want to download and install a paid application, we have also enabled a mobile friendly style to the board called "Artodia". So if you change your board style preference to this in the user control panel, it will render much more tidily on a small screen device. We will soon have it so that it is easy to switch between the mobile and regular style from a single button without going into the control panel, but just ran into a few glitches while testing that and weren't comfortable going live at this time.
    Artodia.gif
    Artodia.gif (5.36 KiB) Viewed 12169 times
The next planned server downtime is midnight on Sunday, PDT, which would be between 2-3am for most of north america and early monday morning in Europe. Prior to that next update, we will be giving access to a copy of ES on a test sever that will enable you to try out, field test, and comment on some of the planned changes before we roll them into the official site.

You should all thank MRVass for putting in long hours and late nights to this, and everyone on the mod team who have been contributing a lot of input to this process behind the scenes.

You can use anything I've posted. My only request would be you make the user location field mandatory for all users. Country minimum.
Need Advice? https://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewt ... =3&t=66302
Mongoose 26" Ledge 2.1 mtb bike $99, yescomusa.com 48V 1000W rear hub kit $200, Hua Tong 72V 40A controller $35, 10ah 24s lipo $217=~43mph, range=45 miles @ 20mph. 25K miles and still going strong.
Huffy Fortress 3.0 with MXUS 3000 4T motor, 24s lipo, 96V 60A controller. Total cost with extras <$700. Top speed ~50mph

That's not a bad idea, but it might not be possible. If it is, it would make the forum a better place. Would make it easier answering questions too.

Make registration Country-minimum. Or - if not given, sniffed and resolved auto-magically. Not difficult to do; there are sites and services that will give you country code for IP address. I dunno how it's done in php but in .NET - features like that are built into the lib.
