Felt like I was living in Seattle for the past couple of weeks in "the OC". Hope the farmers are happy. Bike riding opportunities have been few and far between (non-existent off road).

Forecast 021219.JPG (35.53 KiB) Viewed 677 times
The remnants of the huge storm that just hit Hawaii with 191mph winds, 60' waves and record snow on Maui is going to combine with a cold system coming from Alaska and produce heavy rain and high winds starting tonight. Computer models seem to be changing day to day, so not sure how accurate the forecast is, but we'll see some rain for sure.

Supposed to rain here next day or two, potentially up to half an inch (which is a fair bit for here). Can see the storms on the way on the radar; probably be here in a few hours.

Holy atmospheric river, Batman! It was too dark to accurately read the rain gauge this morning, but at least another 3" in there, so something like 7" for the storm so far. And now the wind is kicking in. Walking to work, I passed a block where it was garbage day. All the cans were blown over and there was garbage that blew downwind for over a block. Uphill. Tree debris was thick on the sidewalk.

Last night, there was one of those orange spots on the radar that passed over my house and I got over an inch in just about an hour. The street gutters looked like rivers.

And I guess the cold front hasn't even arrived yet. It was around 60F this morning and feeling like Hawaii.

Officials in Riverside County closed State Route 74 between Lake Hemet and Valle Vista after streams of mud washed across the roadway. It is not clear when the road will reopen.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued an El Niño advisory on Thursday, indicating the climate pattern has taken effect and is likely to continue through the spring. Forecasters say there is about a 55% chance that El Niño conditions will continue through the spring.

However, the slow formation of the El Niño weather conditions are not what has caused the state’s recent storms, said Michelle L’Heureux, a meteorologist with the weather service’s Climate Prediction Center. She added that the El Niño would be weak through April.

A much more random phenomenon taking place in the central tropical Pacific — the Madden Julian Oscillation — is what has been causing the on-and-off rainfall since its formation in October. The Madden Julian Oscillation is a fast-moving weather pattern that creates a jet stream extending to the northern Pacific Ocean.
And closer to home:
A woman was taken to a hospital early Thursday after rescuers pulled her from the wreckage of a home in Sausalito following a mudslide. Southern Marin fire officials said her duplex collapsed and slid down a hill into another home as rain pounded the neighborhood shortly before 3 a.m.

Rescuers located the woman after they saw her hand sticking out from the wreckage. She was covered in mud as officials wheeled her on a stretcher into an ambulance. The slide prompted officials to evacuate 50 homes in the area.

Over 8" now for the storm. And still showering. Trail riding is going to be soggy for a while.
