Hi
Im trying to build a large escooter featuring a 2000w 48v brushless motor. I cant understand the battery power and capacity needed for it. None of the leadacid batteries say wattage output on them. Would 4 12ah bateries be enough to run the motor at full capacity? How would I do it?

thanks

if there's an amp discharge rating for the batteries you're looking at, multiply it by 12 volts to get the wattage rating.

Lead acid batteries are a waste of time and money. It's too late to make any case for them. They'll support your power load, but not for long, and only with heavy voltage sag. They will wear out quickly and weigh down your scooter all the time. They are cheaper only if you don't use them much.

If cost and power output are your main criteria, look into lithium polymer pouch cells as used for radio controlled airplanes. Hobbyking.com is the usual place to get them. Keep in mind that you need at least 50 amps and that the label current capacity of such batteries is exaggerated by about a factor of 4. So if a battery's amp-hour capacity times its C rating equals or exceeds 200, that will do. Putting batteries in series multiplies their voltage, and putting them in parallel multiplies their amp-hour capacity.

Note that these lithium polymer batteries are more likely to catch fire than other batteries, and store them accordingly (especially when charging).

If ya at all bothered by the the thought of FIRE. Do not even think of building your own battery from HobbyFireKing or any other type of lithium battery pouch or cells without spending a few years reading and learning what not to do when building a scooter battery. Good place to start learning is here:
Sticky thread index for "Battery Technology"

Better idea is to buy a 48V battery all done with a charger.

Look here:
ebikes.ca Battery Kits
or
lunacycle.com 18650 Ebike Battery Pack

Lots more place to buy scooter batteries. Pay attention to the shipping rules. If a battery passes all the shipping regulations, good chance that it is a safe battery.
