There aren’t a ton of posts on mid-drives on an EEB frame, so I figured I’d share my project while it’s in progress.

Currently my setup consists of:
- EEB Frame
- Rockshox Domain RC Front Fork 27.5”
- 72v 20ah, 150amp continuous, custom battery build, using 18650 Samsung R25,
- Kelly KEB72601 controller

Previously I had a rear hub Crystalyte TC100, but the axle snapped, so I decided to go with a mid-drive next to avoid that kind of situation again, as it was pretty terrifying.

So far this is what I’m thinking of getting. I’d appreciate any feedback or comments based on others experiences.

20” BMX Rim - Stranger XXL (42mm) - not sure if 20” is a bit too small given the 27.5” in the front. I was struggling to find a 24” with everything else I was looking for. I was thinking worst case I can fit the front with a 26er. My thinking of going with the 20” was for better acceleration and the options available for beefy bmx rims, as well as that I’ve read they pair well with 16” moto tires.

Hope Pro Boost hub - this was the only 36H disc hub I could find that was the width I was looking for (greater than 135), so it would fit solidly in my EEB frame dropouts (though I’ll need to do some work on widening them since they’re only 9mm at the moment)

16” Pirelli moped/motorcycle tire - My ride is filled with plenty of pot-holes, and I’m aiming for a nice feeling ride at higher speeds, so I was thinking of getting a moped tire.

Chains
BMX TBD

Spokes
Calculations gave 180.6 Left, 178.5 right, so I'm going with 180 and 178.

Update - I pulled the trigger with the Stranger XXL wheel and Hope Pro 4 hub and started building it. It's just about trued up, just need some final touches.

I'm starting to reconsider the Cyclone 3000. I ordered it, but then there was an issue with shipping, which lead me to continue researching. I was on the fence about buying the Cyclone 3000 kit and doing it on my own, and so I'm starting to lean towards doing it on my own, mainly b/c I want a very powerful motor, i.e. 8-10 kw. I was only going with the Cyclone kit to make it easy on myself, but I think I'm going to go the longer more painful route of doing this all myself.

So far I'm looking at the Mars motor (etek). I'm talking with the Kelly company to narrow down my choices - http://kellycontroller.com/brushless-disc-motors-c-21_63.html

I'll post an update when I have more info.

I made some progress with the tire/wheel. I got it pretty true, or as close as I'm gonna make it, probably within 1mm. The space between the tire and wheel however is super insanely tight. I tried getting a tube in there but as I was pumping it up it popped, which didn't surprise me because i really had to stuff it in. Not sure what I'm going to do. I may try it one more time, I might also stop by a local moto shop and see if they can do it for me. In any case, I'm enjoying the looks of it.

On the motor front, I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the MARS/Motenergy 0907 and bought from Kelly Controllers, where I also got my KEB controller. These guys are insanely fast, they ship basically within a day or two of every order I've ever made. I've been pretty busy with work/life so I haven't had a chance to give it a test yet, I'm hoping to do so this weekend.

I knew it would be big, and it's pretty big. I'm going to have to get creative to get it to fit within/around my current frame as my battery is pretty big and takes up the majority of the frame. I included a few photo with measurements as there is not a ton of documentation on the motor.
