[EDIT] After reading the article, it seems they use a double reduction.

Due to its high output, the BMW Motorrad development study has no hub motor with direct drive or planetary gearbox. Instead, the high-performance electric machine is mounted behind the battery casing. The secondary drive consists of a toothed belt from the electric machine to the belt pulley mounted coaxially on the swinging fork pivot with drive pinion. From here, power transmission occurs via roller chain to the rear wheel.

I think this is very interesting.

One key element is that BMW is one of the few brands that can pretty easily demand a high price just because of the brand. That gives them room to build a scooter with some pretty high-end components, and still be a money-maker. For example, I'd be more willing to drop $12k for a BMW than I would for a brand like Vectrix. And BMW has a strong pool of engineering talent, so they easily have the resources to do this right.

Yes Mike your right and when they say you pay for the name ...well exactly they will still be there in a couple of years to serve you. And in that name like you say it will reflect the quality they have already

From this latest video looks like the target market is folks with anorexia nervosa so this will help make the bike more aerodynamic and reduce Wh/km...

The very first scooter posted with the funky black and white body panels is very appealing to me. It looks very comfortable and practical. The other concepts linked after are either too small or they are gas. The last one with the skinny girl is a beautiful work of design but not practical. No rear fender and not much for expansion for more storage like saddle bags or a bubble. I wish they'd stop making concepts and come out with an e-scooter people can buy and use.

BMW’s first electric scooter rolled off the production in Berlin last week with first deliveries expected in May.

The BMW C evolution is based on BMW’s current C 650GT bike, but gone is two-cylinder two-stroke engine and any trace of fossil fuel. In its place is a 47hp electric motor supplied by a 8kWh lithium-ion battery using the same cells as the new BMW i3 megacity car.

The zero emissions moped has a top speed of 75mph and can cover up to 62 miles on a single charge. It will also be comfortably faster that its gasoline-powered sibling, boasting a 0-62mph time of 6.2 seconds and increased torque.

A full charge from a domestic socket – without a wallbox station – takes around four hours, although a charge to 80 percent takes two hours 15 minutes. BMW says the C evolution’s energy recuperation feature – used while braking and coasting – can also extend range by 10-20 percent if used effectively.

Along with the BMW i3 and i8 plug-in hybrid sportscar, the C evolution is a part of a 100 million euro investment in electromobility up until 2015 from the German automaker. It wants to see a proliferation of electric motorcycles and scooters in urban areas and will offer three versions of the C evolution including a police-spec model that’s sure to boost exposure.

It’s now possible to by electric versions of everything from a retro-styled Italian scooter to an all-out carbon fiber superbike. Riders in all segments have be impressed by the instant torque and smooth acceleration that electric motors provide. As journeys on two-wheeled machines tend to be shorter than those undertaken in cars, the limited range of electric motorcycles is also less of a problem.

When it goes on sale the C evolution will cost £13,500 ($22,450) in the UK. By way of comparison, the C 650 GT costs £9,795 in the UK but $9,990 in the US, which suggests that the C Evolution would cost less than $20,000 were it to reach North America. BMW is yet to give a release date for the US.
