My lowrider mobility scooter ev build - advice!

Postby Stupidnoob » Wed Oct 23, 2013 10:40 pm

Hey y'all

Stumbled across your awesome site while on my quest for knowledge for my build. I am starting simple but would love some advice.
What I have here is a real cool old mobility scooter trike on 20" wheels. It is a 24v system with an old shunt mount motor that just busted a bushing. I have driven it and it's fun!
I want to upgrade this motor for more speed and quieter motor.. This thing was loud and clangy.

The system is real simple you can see the motor mounted on the outside of the housing. The shaft off the motor connects to a belt and that's what drives to scooter. Beside the belt, there is the chain around the sprocket which I'm guessing is the gearing?? And that's it!

What do you guys think? I'm going to do this as a cool lowrider style chopper ev trike. I want to be running smoothe and peppy!! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

I'm going to browse these forums while I wait to see what y'all have to say about this thing lol

Thanks In advance!

Couple of silly clips... All I had was a switch so I wired it up , that's full speed!

Totally helps

Confirms I was looking at the right motors all day today lol

750watts = approx 1hp?

What do you think that kind of setup could achieve for speed?
I've been leaning towards 36v

746 w = 1hp

36 v motor just check what it uses for motor gear ie its size then calc the ratios

with the space you have get a 48v controller I am using a 36 v motor on 48 v controller with a 10 tooth on motor 72 tooth intermediate then 25 to the back derailer of my bike

Makes sense

Except one problem ... This old thing is belt driven off the motor lol!

remove the cover of the drive train and take some pics you might be Able to convert to chain drive or to a cogged / toothed belt drive for better efficiency

I guess I can just take the tooth off the motor slide my belt adapter over the motor shaft and screw it down with the Allen key.

As far as gearing goes, I'll have to figure that one out.

Appreciate the info and links...awesome site!

Ya I'll upload some pics tomorrow of it I took the motor out but I'll hold it in there so you guys can see what I'm talking about

Awesome!'

Here are the pics

There's the old motor with the belt housing that slides over the motor shaft, that gets held Down by a set screw

Then the belt wraps around that and goes to the bigger flywheel

Then we have the chain /sprocket setup beside it.

The whole "axle housing is welded to the frame of the scooter.

Not too sure where to go from here, I'm hoping I can still use that motor type setup

Got a bit more work done while I'm trying to figure out the motor situation... Stripped all that hideous purple paint off and brushed the aluminum... Whole new attitude now!! Love it

check out princessauto they should have cogged pulleys and toothed belts for your direct drive from the motor to your intermediary drive

I was thinking the same thing!!

Or I could just switch out the sprocket to chain.

Then I'm guessing the chain part on the right is the gearing? I was talking to a guy who runs 13 tooth chain off the motor and a 65 rear sprocket off the motor which he said has worked great.

Just confused if I should remove that belt setup off the motor and go straight chain, since I'm planning on going at least 1000w

If I run a setup like that

ie - off motor 13t to 65 t
Do I need to have the same setup (13+65) on the other side? Trying to understand gearing and I think it's starting to come clearer now... That would be a 5:1 ratio I believe

Thanks for your help, I'm slowly understanding it, I'm going to remove the current setup today

looks like you have about 5:1 from motor and about the same to the chain drive so if I am right about a 10 to 1 to the axle

Hey Jim

So I took the chain off etc today and it's 15 on the small sprocket and 60 on the big, so 4:1 is that correct?

I ordered my 36v motor already (chain drive).

The belt setup that currently comes off the motor , when I change it to chain, should I be running the same 4:1 or can I run differently coming off the motor? Or do the 2 have to be the same? Or do I even need to change it? I'm guessing chain is more efficient?

Thanks!
This has been a fun project so far!!

And just curious if anyone else is reading this thread

I have no idea how to get these rims off??!? I removed the set screw which I thought held the rim to the hub but no dice.

There is no nut on the end of the hubs, looks like the axle was pounded in?? Wtf?
I took out every set screw along the axle , no dice... Even loosened off and opened that trippy ring gear box.

Should the rims just wiggle off? I don't want to pry too hard and bend the wheel... I don't think they are threaded on either?!?

look inside that hole in the hub that you can see in your pic there might be some thing there if in the worst case you may have to go to a bike shop to see if they can help

I would not try to disassemble the grey device on your chain drive as that is your differential to allow turning if there is any marking on it I would look up the markings on the grey cylinder
