It does look slick.

Pity they don't let you charge at home.

Awesome idea and a cool scooter too.

One thing nice about this idea is, if you run out of juice short of a charging station, depending on how far you fall short, you could push the bike the rest of the way there, or carry the battery there and back.

Gogoro scooter

You might have seen reports of this from CES, I'm not too fussed about the battery swap + infrastucture (seems a bit far off), but the engineering of the scoot looks good, have a look at the graphic of the drive train on their site:

http://www.gogoro.com/#/faster

Water cooled motor, monocoque frame - they were doing burn outs at CES so it must have some poke...

I only caught parts of what was going on at CES from tv shows and the web. Technology is moving so fast forward it leaves my head spinning right now. I can't believe how close we are getting to forms of transportation that will be driven by computers and GPS. Punch in your destination and sit back or have a nap while it takes you there.

That scooter is very cool. It's nice to see a company working hard to bring an e-scooter with the engineering and quality levels on par with ICE scooters like Vespas. Love the aluminum frame, I wish I had that on my China produced scooter. The fight against rust is an ongoing battle on my scooter with its low grade steel frame with welds done by a five year old. I don't mind the battery swap system, this is a good solution to peeps like me living in colder climates. Being able to bring the batts inside is a plus for me but only if the batteries are made of good powerful cells. Seeing how they put a lot of thought in all aspects of their scooter, I'm thinking the batteries will be top quality. I also like that they went out to make an e-scooter with lots of grunt and speed, making a real city commuter that can even go out on excursions in neighboring cities, as long as you stay off high speed highways.
Now they need to show us some accessories to go with it for storage and stuff like windscreens and color matching helmets. I subscribed to their site, if they end up making a top of the line e-scooter, I might be interested in becoming a Canadian distributor.

In 2011 Horace Luke and Matt Taylor, former executives at HTC, came together and secured $50 million in funding to start the project from a “variety of influential Asian investors, including Dr. Samuel Yin of Ruentex Group and Cher Wang of HTC.” Gogoro has secured an additional $100 million to aid in its 2015 Smartscooter rollout.

Luke and Taylor have extensive experience in mobile phone technology and both spent multiple years working for Microsoft prior to HTC as well. For the Smartscooter/GoStation project Gogoro has also partnered with Panasonic “to deliver on the smart cities vision through a variety of innovations and industry firsts.” One of the first items to come from the Panasonic partnership is the Gogoro-designed battery, which utilizes Panasonic’s cylindrical 18650-size automotive-grade lithium-ion energy cells.

I didn't look at the specs before. I'm a bit surprised at the weight. probably big batteries for the range they claim, although they don't seem that big in the video. Cells are Panasonic they say, 18650? Also for a scooter that does burnouts, why does the top speed drop so much when climbing hills. it should have enough torque to climb a 15% hill without slowing down. It still looks really nice but I'm beginning to be a lot less impressed with its performance.

They may have dialled up the power limits for the expo :D

I think thew battery swap would work great for the pizza delivery outfits and postal services, that's where it would make a big difference, the sooner they get all those 2 stroke engines out of towns and cities the easier we can breathe.

That steering fork angle though... I wonder how it feels to ride. Seems like in low-speed turns the wheel would want to flop into the turn?

I think it might be an visual illusion with the shape of the fork.
I doubt they would have the head angle and offset be that different from the norm.

What's the advantage of variating an electric motor? I thought running it through a secondary gearbox (especially a CVT) would be a big drag?

Gogoro suicide ride reveals range potential.

Post by 4LivesPerGallon » Jul 02 2015 5:56pm

This is a death-defying ride on a small-wheel scooter. You can hear at least one road-scrape when the rider tilts down too far. The top speed seems to be 90KPH. The ride appears to be going down a mountain, and he ends up in a city at the end of a 35-minute run.

The energy-gauge shows 3/4 full at the start, then only a small amount left at the end. So, I'm guessing that the range is an amazing 45 minutes x 65 kph. That is excellent performance from the Taiwan-made Gogoro scooter, and would probably give the BMW Evolution-C owners, who paid $25K for the BMW electric scooter, a reason to have Buyer's Remorse.

GOGORO電動車5月上市 遭轟揩「油」

SNIP ...

As an incentive to pre-order customers, Gogoro is offering reusable batteries, maintenance and roadside service, all free for a period of two years.

Peng Ming-yi(彭明義), Gogoro vice president of marketing, said there are 18 service shops and 70 battery swap stations for the scooter in Taipei and New Taipei. The company expects to increase the number of battery swap stations to 150 by the end of the year, he said.

Gogoro will extend the pre-order period until the end of July, Peng said Friday at a pre-launch press conference.

The scooters are also available on hire purchase plans, which require a down payment of NT$10,000, and the balance paid in 12, 18, 24 or 36 monthly installments, he said.

More news re the Gogoro. (G takes on the Dutch):
https://www.techinasia.com/gogoro-elect ... amsterdam/
Gogoro announced today that it will launch its funky electric scooters in Amsterdam in the first half of 2016. That means the startup must also build a charging network for its e-bikes where owners can swap packs to get a fully-charged battery. The smart scooters will hit additional European cities later in 2016.

The startup last week secured US$130 million in series B funding, with investors including battery cell supplier Panasonic.

"Gogoro, Bosch Join to Bring Electric Scooter Sharing to Berlin"
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/ ... -to-berlin
Gogoro Inc., an electric scooter-maker backed by Panasonic Corp., is joining with Robert Bosch GmbH to bring a vehicle-sharing program to Europe as the company seeks to expand beyond its home market of Taiwan.

Starting Wednesday, Berliners will be able to use a smartphone app to locate, book and pay for a battery-powered moped to zip through the city. The program is similar to public bicycle-renting programs such as City Bike in New York, but users can drop the scooter off directly at their destination without parking it at a central docking station. The startup is working with Coup, a subsidiary of German industrial technology firm Bosch, and Boston Consulting Group Digital Ventures to build the scooter-sharing software.

"5 startups to watch in greater China in 2016" ... from last December.

Image
https://www.techinasia.com/5-startups-watch-china-2016

... and Number Two on their list?
Gogoro: because Taiwan missed the memo on electric scooters

We’ll count Taiwan’s Gogoro scooter company as belonging to the greater China area for the purposes of this list, because the company is too interesting to ignore.

It wouldn’t be quite correct to call Gogoro a moped startup. It’s more like a hybrid between an electrical infrastructure firm and a scooter company. That’s because Gogoro is one of the first companies to try and take on Taiwan’s obsession with gas-powered scooters, and it’s doing so by building its own island-wide network of battery charging stations.

The Gogoro moped – read our review here https://www.techinasia.com/gogoro-ebike-scooter-taiwan– went on sale in Taipei this summer, the culmination of the startup’s bike and battery building spree since it was formed in 2011. Its launch was followed by a November series B fundraising round of US$130 million and, just a few weeks later, news that the company would be making its first moves outside of Taiwan.

Asia’s ebike enthusiasts will have to wait a bit longer, though. The company’s first international foray will be in Amsterdam, with plans to roll out in the first half of 2016. Gogoro says other European cities are in the pipeline for later next year.

We’ll be keeping an eye on how the company brings both its bikes and its proprietary charging stations to Europe. This is one startup that’s definitely worth keeping an eye on – lest, with its bikes’ top speed of 95kph, it zips right by.
"proprietary charging stations"? Oooops

Hehe... ESB "Search found 55 matches: Gogoro"...

Amusing maybe to see they note on their site right now:
Smart Power

Clean, intelligent, instantly accessible energy available at more than 516 locations.

... and:
The Future Of Energy.

Welcome to a new era of energy. Smart Energy is the world’s first network of swappable batteries. It’s the fastest, cleanest, most powerful way to refuel.

It's the fastest "recharge" I know of. Just to swap batteries.
