Looking at doing a yamaha v50 conversion to hub drive as a city runabout!
I currently have an old Honda postie I use as city runabout and this winter I'm looking to convert an old rundown v50 I have.

Would like to do a similar build to what the Deus guys did with a honda cub 90...one of the builder works for stealth bikes so I think the drive and battery's are based off one of the h-52s

Due to this I'm thinking of using the crystalyte 5kw hub drives. Which I'll either lace to the original wheel.

Not looking for massive power but cruising speed of 60km/hr would be good.
I live in Wellington so fairly strong winds and some steep hills around the city so want to be able to get around sufficiently with this build.

Range wise doesn't have to be huge...generally I use the bike to run around town probably no more than 15km but I do have a nice little circuit I do around the bays from time to time which is about 35km so I'd like a 50km range if practicable.

Based on this fact I'm thinking battery with 48V x 40amps would be pretty good (1.9kw)...quick acceleration and torque for hills- downside would be costly?
Could I use 36v and achieve decent speed? Would I be better raising voltage and lowering amperage?? Basically little lost on what I could expect at this stage!!

Like the deus cub build I'd like to hide all the electronics in the old fuel tank and frame once engine has been removed.

Will fit torque braces to rear axle for the hub drive and remove the rear springs from the v50

Looking for some help on power considerations and components suggestions that have been used successfully for small commuters.

Ideally want to do this on a tight budget <1000 dollars would be amazing but I'm imagining 2000 is more realistic!!

Trying to keep it fairly compact also to house everything under the seat and old frame area.

Any help on battery calcs and suggestions on key components would be great! Or if anyone has more info on the deus electric build for inspiration that would be awesome also!!

Cheers!

Ok so update on this... I'm considering LiPo multi star battery's 6S 16Ah...combining 4 to give 48V 32Amps from the battery's...or use 6 for 72V 32amp?
Considering a Kelly 48V controller as they seem to be able to handle large amperage and have lots of features.
Still looking at the cyrystalyte crown rear hub.

Anyone have experience with a similar setup...in your experience could this produce a cruising speed of 50km/hr and approximate 50km range??

If you want to keep close to your budget you might want to consider the 3kW MXUS or QS205 hub motors. They would be more than enough for your goals and probably cheaper than a Crystalyte 5kW.

Cheers Slowco for the info. Started reading through these threads! Still getting my head around the battery calculations/configurations which will allow me the range and speed I need!
Also thanks for some links on currently for sale! If I can get battery figured out I'll be keen to get this project moving forward quickly!

With some confusion on charging of battery's especially LiPo onboard ebikes I'm thinking adaptto controller may be the best/easiest option to get a good quality controller, BMS setup.
Been reading through NZ LVV certification as will have to look at registering this as a motorcycle on completion and think a professional looking control setup with integrated charging and battery monitoring will give me a more usable system in the long run...looks like budget is blowing up quite quickly!!

Any updates? I'm considering a similar build and would love to hear how the project is progressing.

Hey mate,
Actually ended up selling donor bike which was a ct110 and have relocated to the UK...still very keen to get a project underway but it was the wrong time 😪

Seen one completed in Oz but didn’t get any details on it and also following the Shanghai customs builds! Believe they should be releasing pricing infor on their 1000W setup this week!
