electric trial bike

Compared to other ebikes and what is acheivable. Our bikes with similar or bigger motor and 1,5x more battery weights in at 38kg and we can save another 2kg easy. 12 kg difference for moto tires and rims seems a whole lot to me.

oset seems a fairly conservative company.. building on what works well for them in competition and what can be made available at reasonable prices for the market.. nothing really dramatic in product development, just scaling up with their riders in bike size and power.. but the frame looks pretty heavy duty with the top tube reinforcements, etc.. of course it could be made lighter but perhaps then not as strong.. do you have any back-flip footage of your bike yet?? what type of frame warranty do you offer???

 It's beautiful.
I would love to see near pictures of the construction. Looks so slim. A clutch in an electric trials bike makes a lot of sense to provide the instant power required for climbs.

Electric Motion trial bike also has a clutch lever but it is electronic instead of mechanical.. their test riders requested a clutch lever early on in the product development..

and the new GasGas electric trial bike takes it a step further beyond the Dragonfly, with liquid cooling, multi speed gear box, flywheel and clutch..

the future of electric trial bikes looks very bright.. 8)

Interesting to hear that Electric Motion has an electronic clutch. How does it work? It is like another hall sensor or pot mixing negatively with the throttle signal? It is a servo actioning a mechanic clutch? How does it feel in contrast to a old school clutch?

I'm not certain how the electric motion clutch lever functions but it is not mechanical at all, its like an electronic anti-throttle lever.. electric motion has some videos on YouTube describing the clutch lever function (in french) but unfortunately, although I can read in a few different languages, my ear is not that great to translate the video.. but the Dragonfly using the flywheel probably has more punch from standstill..

I'd like to have a mechanical clutch, but I see no need for a flywheel. You guys are too accustomed to low power.

I see no need for a flywheel

Certainly not if the rotor has a major amount of mass, you would have one already built in. Something with a rotor skeletonized like a Joby would possibly improve with the addition of some rotational mass when bumping the clutch. It may be best when attempting vertical launches to opt for lower bike weight overall however. Will be interesting to see how this develops.

Once you forget about batteries, everything a gas motor can do an electric motor can do much better, because it's torque curve is so much wider with max torque from zero. Feel and precise control over torque delivery is where I'd like a clutch. Of course that's coming from someone yet to try an expensive good FOC controller with torque throttle. Put half of flywheel mass into more motor and I'm sure you'd be better off unless you're still way under-powered.

Saw this in the comment section of an article about the Proto Yamaha Electric Trials bike, it would be interesting to see photos of these historic electric trials bikes and hear more info:

"Back in (IIRC) 1963 at the motorcycle show in Blackpool UK there was a simulated trials section on the Lucas stall with a BSA C15T and a Greeves Scottish trials bike fitted with electric motors instead of the IC engines. I gave the BSA a try, it definitely needed a clutch as the throttle was basically an on/off switch. It's interesting to see the concept has taken over half a century before any other manufacturer has tried the concept."

design report 1/4 (IMA power train) get to know the concept behind the Dragonfly ..
at Mecatecno we have designed the Dragonfly with a clear idea in mind: to bring together the capabilities of a [petrol] bike and the benefits of a green technology by building the lightest, easiest and less demanding trials motorbike we could imagine. To achieve it, we have put into practice a number of innovations, developed 100% by our engineering team. These design and innovation concepts have been developed and tested according to our idea of Electric Trial practice. We invite you to know more about it in four design report issues. This is he first one.

> CONCEPT: IMA (independent motor assembly)

> SPECS:
Motor: BLDC 15Kw, 48V, oil cooled.
Gearbox: 5 speed.
Clutch: Multidisc hydraulic spring system.
Housing: Combined 6082 T6 / 7075 T6 Aluminium CNC milled block.

> DESCRIPTION:
IMA is a system that divides the power train in two differentiated blocks: the electric motor, and the gear/clutch box.

> GENERAL BENEFITS
*INDEPENDENT MOTOR: This architecture allows a clean and more convenient motor maintenance, better electric isolation, and a very fast "in-race" motor replacement in case of failure.
*SPRING MULTIDISC CLUTCH vs DIAPHRAGM: Although it is three times heavier, we have shifted from the former diaphragm clutch to a spring one because it provides a better control, higher precision, higher inertial properties and more setting possibilities. This turns into a more sensible control in classic riding style or a faster response in modern riding style, depending upon the chosen setting.
*5 SPEED GEARBOX vs SINGLE SPEED: Including 5 speed allows a higher control in sections and a more comfortable ride in intersections. It has also a direct impact on energy savings.
