My Chinese Ebay Build

Postby kneedeep » Thu Jan 26, 2017 12:55 am

I have been driving cheap escooters for about 4 years now, the last one my charger shorted burnt the bike to the ground. Now I plan to build a real EV bike. To start I have ordered a frame from Ebay from China. I then bought a Norco Atomic for parts to make the build faster. The Atomic has a 888 Bomber front fork and will donate crank and arms along with Brakes and front spindle. I then went to Ebay for a 25ah 48volt lifepo4 various lights and switches. I ordered so far a 19x1.85 36h rim to do the moto 19 inch conversion and a set of SHINKO 2.75-19 SR244. I will be using a 1500watt gearless hub motor high torque so top speed will be only about 55km/h. I came across this site researching the 19 moto conversion.

I am overwhelmed with the site and will read every night till all my parcels arrive. Chinese new year is slowing things a bit. When I figure how to load pictures I will add to this thread and keep thread going throughout the build. I need this bike for work so I am keeping it low powered to keep from being hassled.

I have one question from the moto conversion though, Why not use milling machine to bore the holes to fit the heavy gage spoke of the motocross rim? If a milling machine was used you could keep full amount of material on outside of hub for strength.

My frame came today. I am very happy with the build quality. The welds look strong with good penetration well thought out battery box inside the frame and good supply of hardware. Side panels are good solid gauge steel along with the frame. Crank is complete with hardware to mount crank arms. Charging port with matching end to install to the charger. All hardware is included to install for including seals bearings dust covers and bolt with star nut to install threadless stem. There is a video on YouTube they put up with full assembly I will post link in another post.

The Atomic showed up and I installed the forks and bars. I have to wait for more parts in the mail before any more gets done. Feel free to give me pointers and criticism as this is my first build.

Thanks. The Frame was from ebay just searched ebike frame and there was 2 people selling same frame one from USA one from China. China one was cheaper by $200 I paid $350 US plus shipping for the frame. It cam with sealed crank bearings installed stem bearings installed swing arm bushings installed and various bolts and hardware. Cannot do links as everything was off of Ebay except for the Norco atomic donor parts (forks front wheel stem and bars). All the small ebay parts under $20 each.

I am having a hiccup with the Chinese supplier of my wheel kit. They still have not sent the wheel out and say not it will not work with the frame I bought from them. There is a communication breakdown right now. I will start looking at other kits and open to suggestions. I am looking for more torque then speed as there are a few hills on my commute to work. This bike will be for road use only and looking for 500-1500 watt 48 volt kits. Suggestions please.

If you haven't bought a controller yet Golden Motor Canada based (controller built into hub motor wheel)
http://www.goldenmotor.ca/

Grin (makers of Cycle Analyst) Canada based
http://www.ebikes.ca/

There's also Lunacycle
https://lunacycle.com/motors/conversion-kits/

And EM3EV
http://em3ev.com/store/index.php?route= ... path=50_40

Then there is always Aliexpress if you dont mind waiting
https://goo.gl/v2FHcM
https://goo.gl/3q07Nd

With regards to frame compatibility, make sure you measure your dropouts (space available at rear for motor)

I have a 155mm drop out and spacers to go down to 135mm if needed. Golden motor Canada is close to me so I will go with them once I have communications sorted with Chinese supplier. Thank you.

QS motors are really good so I hear. Shame you dont have 200mm dropout you could go crazy get 8000w motor!
http://www.qs-motor.com/product/8000w-s ... otorcycle/

They have ones for 135mm dropouts too

Kellycontrollers are good also
http://kellycontroller.com/48v-brushles ... 23_45.html

I got motor and controller from QS store on Aliexpress for my new project
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=85164

Robert Chen answering all my questions (100 reply email thread) was really helpful and items arrived very quickly to Canada via Fedex with very low import fees

Wish I found this site before I bought a the motor kit. Turns out the person that sold me the frame was not really a part of the site I ordered the motor from. They also claimed that they could not mail the motor till after Feb 6 due to Chinese holidays. If all goes well I can just cancel the order and I will then go with goldenmotor.com as they are close and I like the looks of there product. Thanks smeagol222 for the links. I might still go with the Magic Pie and sell the Chinese kit if it does still come.

No worries. Keep in mind that http://www.goldenmotor.com is different to http://www.goldenmotor.ca

I think the .com is based in China, but they have way more/better stuff (I dont think any magic pies tho)

Just a suggestion though, not sure what your use case is, but I thought since you want slightly lower power (1000w to 1500w) have you considered a MID drive system?

I have 1000w BBSHD on a fatbike and BBS02 on hybrid bike they both are awesome!, you can climb hills really well since it uses the gears you already have! Pretty stealthy too, since the motor is near the pedals. Also makes changing the rear tube/tire easy- if you get a flat tire with hub motor its way more of a pain in the ass. Then you can keep you existing wheel as-is. You wouldn't have to re-spoke a hub motor etc. Mid drives are a lot lighter also.

If you want even more power "cyclone" type ones 3000w to 7500w
http://www.cyclone-tw.com/

Luna sell the cyclones, but the BBSHD/BBS02 (750w) are much quieter I've heard
https://lunacycle.com/mid-drive-kits/

Also a place in Canada called Biktrix (where I got my BBSHD), but the cheapest is still Aliexpress
http://www.biktrix.com/collections/conv ... motor-kits
If you wanna check out the BBSHD or BBS02

no I am stuck on the rear gearless hub its plenty of power. A 250 watt cheap motor has climbed any hill around me on my buddies bike. I like the less moving parts the better. I know these kits get better every day but my comfort is still with the hub. I like being able to replace bearings easy on them as well. I put 10 000 to 15 000 km on a year.

Ah nice one! With the controller built in you can have more room for battery inside the frame box. You grabbed a torque arm right?
Also later if you want you could get a second on of these for the front wheel 2WD heh

So the hub motor has M6 bolts for the disc not the usual M5. I went to hardware for some screws to mock up the setup and the M6 screws do not fit through the rotor. I have 203MM Hayes disc. This might be a challenge no luck so far on Ebay. I don't like drilling out a rotor for a larger hole but might have to. The video installs of this motor show M5 bolts so not sure why they would change.

Update. I ordered new m6 hardware for the rear disc, and LCD display will be shipped Monday (they said they forgot). The shock turned out to be too long by 30mm I am going to make a motocross seat anyway and planed to ad a support to the seat and will incorporate a new shock mounting location in this support. I have lots of strut braces from e-scooters so I will ad 2 of those to the hub motor.

I received my LCD display today it is badly scratched up almost used condition. I would say the communication from goldenmotor.ca is poor. He does not return emails I was talking with him on the phone and he made me go online make a profile fill out a Support Ticket in order to get my LCD. I went on last night to check the status of the ticket and it did not work then checked the status of delivery and it said delivered last Friday but it was not. He did not return my email about the disc hardware being different so I ordered that from ebay. The quality of the motor plug and play harness look very good but I would not use this vender ever again.

Ah that sucks man. Sorry they seemed to have pretty popular products but I didn't know they had such bad customer service.

A quick thing though with LCD displays. They've tricked me before when they arrive especially bafang ones they have a really hard to see bit of plastic film stuck on the front that picks up scratches like a magnet. They are pretty hard to find where to pull them off so perhaps yours might still have the plastic on? Just thought I'd give it a shot

My 7/8 I.D. mounts came today. If I use these it would be to mount the mirrors or lights or anything to the handlebars. 4 pairs were less then $20 delivered so extra will be in the hardware bin for future uses. I have larger ones in the mail that will fit the forks for mounting lights.

Well its been slow waiting on parts in the mail and seeing recent dead battery threads I figured I should grab an old LiFePo4 48v 20ah pack I gave up on 3 years ago and investigate it.
Well I tested the BMS leads and found a dead pack this is a 16S set up. I was not planning on looking to deep into this but after 3 years outside in the tool shed with a dead pack in it, the rest of the cells tested 3.25V to 3.31V so I figured I should test further. I bought this balance charger for another set up but it is so handy. I put 1.0A for 2 min in each cell and they went to 3.41V to 3.58V. So over the next week I will do a 3 cycle balance charge on each pack and see what AH each one shows.
If they show good results I will ad this to my build I have a 25ah on the way from china and with this I will have another 20 for 45AH total. If all packs test reasonable I will order 6 new cells to bring back to 16S. I removed the bad pack and will dispose of it properly. Here are some pictures.
