So I have an over 30 year old matchbox car, actually an ambulance, whose battery that powers the emergency lights & siren that still functions. After my son outgrew toys the car was stored in a box in the basement for 20 years and then in an unheated barn for 5 years. My grandsons now play with it, and it still works. So what kind of battery lasts this long? Lithium ion did not exit back then, to my knowledge anyway.

If it's like this one:

then it's basically like three watch / hearing aid batteries, which are a lithium battery, but a nonrechargeable type, that's been around a very long time.

Well I guess that makes sense then, although I'm still amazed at the shelf life.
