2 new HIGH POWER 18650 cells coming soon- Sony and Panasonic

Post by migueralliart » Sep 26 2013 11:29pm

This is good news for all of us. I've been informed of this new type of cell from PANASONIC AND SONY.

THe PANASONIC is supposed to be a replacement model of the 18650PD now called the 18650PF. It is unclear of the specs but similar capacity and better discharge could be news.

The SONY 18650VTC4 30A 2200mah are the ones that probably doc has on those newer makita packs.

Stay tuned for more updates :D

Hi, the test data of the sony VTC4 is very interesting. thx.

I have build a 22s9p pack of these cells. They almost dont get warmer than my hands with my controller set to 60A and no need for balancing or BMS! (drift over my 22s pack is <10mV by now).

here my build: http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewto ... =6&t=53867

I believe the sony can be bought from some scarce vendors. The panasonic I have not been able to find.

So far I didn't get any prices but supowerbattery is working on getting these cells in large stock to make battery packs.

Exciting times for those of us who like using 18650 cells!

I ordered a couple of ncr18650PF from fasttech a week ago. Will let you guys know how it is when they arrive.

Very impressive datasheet for the sony cell!

You should go with the 14500s for e-cigs. Makes them slimmer and they already last a long freaking time in e-cig duty.

I'm going to be building a pack soon with these cells. Thanks for keeping us posted on these developments Orlando!

I've been using the VTC-4 cells for quite some time. They're indeed very nice.

2.1Ah and 30A per cell at only 43g of weight. They look just like the V3, just a different print on them.

You can buy them in from any regular dealer for battery cells here in Germany.
If you need some sourced, I have some here. Send me a pm, if you need any.
They're not the cheapest, but well worth the money, for what they do.

I use a 13s2p VTC4 pack on my folding bike with a 3kg Xofo motor and the performance is spectacular.
Not even 1.2kg for a maximum output of 2.8kW, if you needed it.

Wow! Do they "self balance" like the old V and VT Sonys?

Yep, drift free.

They make for some nice high power or miniature packs.
Or if the sag of the V3 is too much for you, those are the way to go.

Any update on these? SuPowerBattery doesn't seem to have them in stock.

Is there a graph for NCR18650PF's?

I saw the new Makita BL1840 that have the 2Ah Konion cells.

These pack are too expensive right now but as they become availlable price will drop fast and the old BL1830 shold become less popular

Do you know if these new ones will self-balance as well? If they self-balance, there wouldn't have to be any balance leads required, correct?

The only thing i could find was the internal resistance change, and the chemistry change,
*
the PD is 22mΩ with a Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminium core,
*
the PF is 35mΩ with a Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide core.
*
From what i can tell, the new PF chemisty will be better for longer high drain applications and should be less prone to damage over time.
Seems like the main difference is longer life and higher heat tolerance maybe, going off posts i've googled...
Efficiency is everything :bolt:

My first major build: 1.6kW 8T MAC motor on a Trek 4500.
The new all-arounder: Leafmotor 1500w @ 4kW on a Turner O2 full suspension.
The monster scooter: 20" eZee on a Cannondale Semi Recumbent.
Whipper-snapper: ? on a lightweight BikeE Semi Recumbent

Thats only a wild guess based on the manganese in this cells.

Has anyone got original NCR18650PF datasheet? I've try on the forum, and google but can't find it. For Sony US18650VTC4 it doesn't seems to be available too.

Cheers, actually I've seen this one but I'm not sure it's genuine. It looks completely different than for example US18650NC1 datasheet, also it's inconsistent - on the first page "Cycle performance" is specified as 60% Min. of Initial capacity at 500 cycles (10A discharge), but graph on the page 8 show it as 1800mAh (90%) - it's quite big difference.
