^^ Nice fund... :) (ESB "Search found 0 matches: Superdielectrics")... as in:
Dr Donald Highgate, the director of research at Superdielectrics – a company that worked with the universities on the research, said: “It could have a seismic effect on energy, but it’s not a done deal.”

Hopefully this leads to readily available 18650s with both high energy density AND good cycle life. Although it might just benefit proprietary automotive pouch cells that can't be sourced...

^^ OH. Possible new term/phrase for the `Sphere. Not "NMC" lithium of course, but NMC "111"? Where the "111" refers to equal "parts of nickel, manganese, and cobalt". The relative amounts of those elements determines the characteristics of the battery.

... and notes:
The effect is noted in the triangle diagram above. Researchers are targeting 250 Wh/kg and beyond for long-range electric vehicles using nickel-rich cathodes to increase energy density, while reduction in cobalt is also helpful since it lowers costs. Companies have switched from NMC 111 to NMC 442 to NMC 622, and now NMC 811 is slated for introduction in the next two years.

^^ They say:
Our new research suggests that “proton batteries” – rechargeable batteries that store protons from water in a porous carbon material – could make a valuable contribution.
... wonder how this compared to the "proton conductive membrane" (PCM) seen in early 2016...:

Thats a good article.
But I am dubious on all these claims about lowered Cobalt usage with no performance degradation because I think it would of been done long ago if it was possible. Lithium Cobalt was pretty much the first rechargeable lithium cell chemistry invented and it crushes all the others in performance.
Seems just like Elon Musks promise of 20,000 Model 3's per month which he never got even close to.

I seen the increased price of Cobalt doubling charts but I am surprised to see even Lithium also increasing in price as well, but Lithium is rising at a much slower pace.
https://c1cleantechnicacom-wpengine.net ... Prices.png

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-mini ... SKBN1GV0C2
Looking at this article above, it seems clear there is no near-term plan to replace Cobalt, instead, the aim is just to fight harder to secure supplies.
https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2018 ... batteries/

To me the whole claim of "theres nothing to see here folks, it will all go away and be fine" sounds way too much like Elon Musk and Tesla production problems.

Cobalt which is synonymous with the color blue is easily visible as shown in this jehugarcia video, as he deconstructs a genuine Tesla 18650 cell. Looks like they use a fair bit of it.

Eliminating dendrites -Specifically for lithium metal batteries- by pulsing electrically at 15 ma/cm2. Anyone here know how to do this?

That is interesting but would place a phenomenal amount of pressure on the charging system to keep your battery from exploding.

I'm guessing these are expensive. Maybe run a string of these in a pack of cheaper cells to add cooling?

The discharge reaction is endothermic. With most cells, the heating from internal resistance more than overcomes this.

How fast would a fairly normal ebike go on a 1s pack? Assuming no voltage sag? Would it even move? Guess the controller couldn't have a lvc. I'm assuming this is a April first gag and a really well done one pretty hilarious but man those cells would be cool. Pun not intended but keeping it lol.

He put alot of effort into it. I'm guessing he pulled the cell out of the fridge, did the discharge test with thermal imaging, and played it backwards, plus custom cell wrap, packaging, and spot welding. I hope he got enough enjoyment to justify the effort.

Hehe... "Search found 51 matches: Lithium-Metal" (in this thread). Again:

Self-Healing Lithium-Metal Anodes for Higher Energy Density Batteries:
https://cleantechnica.com/2018/04/06/se ... batteries/

Starts:
As part of the ever-evolving improvement of battery technology, there’s a lot of anode research going on around the world. One idea is to replace commonly used graphite with lithium metal for the anode, and that may have just gotten a notable boost thanks to some research out of New York State’s Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Here's some info's about many lithium battery factories being built in Europe, including a 4 billion euros factory called Northvolt, which is only a theoretical investment group, and some that are already running since 2017. It's pretty good view of the availability of technologies from the press cryptolithography stories. http://www.climatechangenews.com/2018/0 ... om-mapped/
