My a123 pack

Nice Job Slayer!

Just pay apttention to not short two negative balancer RCA plug together! :wink:

Doc

Ha ha ha doc, if you noticed that just by looking at the pic your pretty smart, yesterday i just barely touch two of the neg post of the rca and noticed it was live there when touched ...oh well it is just making a little sparks.

My first day with electric bike, I hooked up the leads to the sla pack bacwards. That was the end of the rca charger plug, as the negative, now positive, was touching the frame. I use the radio shack molex plugs now, a cheap option for a polarized plug with all the contacts shrouded to avoid accidental contact on both sides of the plug.

you mean you plugged the positive on the outside of the rca plug ? and that caused a short on the frame ? i dont really understand.

Doc

i decided to sabotage this a/v selector and make my pack a little safer

Sorry about the slow reply, and the vague comment. What I did was connect the positive and negative backwards on an sla pack. It had an rca charger plug, with it's hot terminal normaly in the middle, and harder to short on something. When I reversed the polarity, It was hot on the outer part, and when it touched the frame It vaporized the plug. Fortunately I got a clue something was wrong, and didn't get as far as connecting the controller.

I did my first ride today, i finished my dual a123 pack and i am very please with the results, i did a 4 .56 ah ride , 1870 watts peaks, all batteries stayed balance within 3.34 for 14 of them and 2 at 3.36 at the end...now it took 1 hour to recharge with the soneil and at the end they are still pretty close to each other 3.48 to 3.51 they went a little higher at some point like some were at 3,62 and 3,58 but as soon as the light turned green i unplugged them cause the float mode is 55,4 and i did not want them to go lower i don t know if they will but anyway i ll probably know later ...but for balancing i guess i will only need to do it once a week .

So i did two other ride both of them was 10,20 ah at the end ...after a recharge by soneil only and the pack at 55.4 volts and the other i topped them with the voltphreaks and 57.9 volts...

ride one soneil charge only 55.4 volts start.... end 51.8 volts --- 10.20 ah used ...takes 2 hour 45 min to recharge
pack1 3.23 3.24 .. pack 2 3.24 3.25
...... 3.24 3.24 ...... 3.23 3.23
..... 3.19 3.23 ...... 3.21 3.24
...... 3.19 3.21 ...... 3.25 3.25

ride two soneil charge and topped with voltphreaks charger to bring each cells to 3.7 volts each
at the start of the ride 57.9 volts ....51.8 volts at the end --10.20 ah used

pack1 .. 3.23 3.24 .. pack2 3.24 3.24
...... 3.24 3.24 ...... 3.23 3.23
...... 3.20 3.23 ...... 3.21 3.24
...... 3.19 3.20 ...... 3.24 3.24

i would like to say what the voltage of my pack is in % and i will tweak it as i learn more

approx
55 volts and up = 100 %
54 volts = 99 %
53.8 volts =98 %
53.6 volts =96%
53.58 -94%
53.50 =85%
53.48 =75%
53.45volts =60%
53.2volts =50%
52.8volts =40%
52.4 volts =30%
51.8volts =14%
51 volts =10%
48 volts = 2%

at the end it is hard to say but from looking at the discharged curves i have seen here the voltage drop faster in the end

new another comparaison
new edit on may 17 2011 is this info for my new ca dp that i have to adjust the shunt
55.3 volts start charged with soneil only
ride 51.02 volts at end after resting more than 3 hours 11.19 ah used on cycle analyst with shunt at 1.630 mOhm ( shunt is prob inaccurate new c a i bought, i will adjust next ride to 1.700 )

pack 1
3.225 3.238
3.246 3.213
3.012 3.231
3.142 3.213

pack 2
3.245 3.254
3.239 3.099
3.071 3.247
3.235 3.253

shunt at 1.700 is 10.22 ah = 51.0 volts
next is 1.670

Hi everyone,

just a little update on my packs, everything is well i did not get a chance to ride that much i did around 20 ride since last post (april 05)
and they are just great i don t even need to use the voltphreaks charger just the soneil does the job just fine. I just keep a close monitoring to make sure

here is a pic

why i did not get a chance to ride that much is because i painted my car i took all month in my spare time to do it

Hi everyone i just reposted my pics in case anyone is interested in seeing them plus i added today some shrink wrap ...the wrap was too small so i had to cut them and wrap what was missing with duck tape loll

Ha.. good to see they still work .. teh balance plug gelped for that right?

the shring wrap will make the pack a better look!

On ebay you can find some larger size if you wish

Doc

Yes Doc they work very well ...and the balance plug helped a lot too at first especially when you don t know them ...now i use them less ... yes it looks less scary with the shrink wrap ...thanks again Doc

good useful pack slayer.im thinkin of building one of these next.so im glad to see you detail the build.are you noticing big power drop at the bottom end of the pack voltage?

no at the end it is still discharging 52 amps the same as when it is full ...that s why i made it a rule to not go too close to 11.5 ah and when i am close to that i pedal a lot ...so i don t discharge fully
