(CLOSED) Passing the Hat to Thank Doctor Bass !

Post by oatnet » Mar 21 2009 1:14am

Most of us have seen and learned from the standardized battery tests Doc has run and shared for us. Many of us have benefitted by his advice and ideas. Lots of us have benefitted from cheap a123 packs he has had up for sale. Whenever a vendor posts a new cell on E:S, we say 'send it to Doc for an impartial test.'

I had an idea of how we could thank Doc for all his hard work, by giving him the ability to take his battery testing to the next level. So far, Doc's testing has been limited by the capabilities of his CBA-II. You may have seen elsewhere on E:S mention of CamLight System's CC-400, a Programmable Electronic Load that would allow Doc to use his CBA-II to discharge-test batteries at up to 400w:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=938266

The CC-400 costs $389+shipping, so I'll throw $50 into the hat towards one of these for Doc, anyone else want to pitch in?

-JD

Edit - this has been funded and Doc has his CC-400, so I am adding (CLOSED) to the title.
PS - Doc sorry to embarass you with the Public Display, but THANKS for all your hard work!

If it means 1-10C tests of Headway cells can be accomplished, put me down for $US25 :D
Paypal can be arranged when an adequate level of donation pledges have been made.

I think JD has a great idea here and CamLight would like to help out. I'll make a CC-400 available for $339+shipping. This is $50 off the regular price. Doc has some some great testing for E-S and we'd like to see him be able to do more testing as cells evolve and power levels go up!

Using our CC-400 load with Doc's CBA-II will bring his total discharge power capability to 500W continuous and over 650W intermittent, at current levels up to 150A for single Li cells. In addition, the CC-400 will allow him to set the CBA to a very low discharge current level (leaving the rest for the CC-400). This will significantly increase the accuracy of the CBA's measurement of the cell/pack voltage because of the reduced voltage drop in the CBA's leads.

We urge everyone to chip in whatever you can, Doc deserves it!

I'll go in for $50 as well. As the cells get better, they will need to be tested at higher and higher levels, to really document true capabilities and discount the hype. One question I know I'd like answers for is just how much better, if at all, are PSI/BMI cells over the Headway 10Ah cells JD is using? This higher limit will let Doc get the answer, I think. From my own tests with early "green" PSI/LiBeBatt cells, although they claim that these are 10C continuous, what I've found is they really aren't usuable above about 7-8C, and that is peak. Above that and the voltage drop is just too much. I'm guessing what Doc will find is that the Headways are closer to their 4-5C rating than the PSI/BMI are to their 10C ratings. In any case, hard to justify the pretty significant price difference. I'm also curious to find out if the newer "grey" cells have better performance over the original green ones.

One thing I've found with pretty much all LiFePO4 cells, from the lower C Ping/duct tape variety, upto and including a123s, is that in an EV application, the cell's C rating for continuous, is closer to a peak load you can expect to get, and not not have the voltage sag so much that it won't deliver the watts. I think Doc's continued tests will see if my general observations are valid.

Here are the totals so far:

oatnet 50.00
voicecoils 25.00
Camlight 50.00
Deepkimchi 20.00
flip_normal 20.00
docnjoj 25.00
GGoodrum 50.00
wanders 20.00
nicobie 20.00
======
Total 280.00

Wow, thanks everyone! Half a day, and we are already within $109 of the $389 we need for the unit, not including shipping. Camlight, how much additional will shipping to Doc up in Canada be?

docnjoj, once we have enough pledges to fund the gift, I guess we should send our pledges direct to Camlight, if he is OK with piecemealing it like that.

If you are thinking of contributing, please don't be intimidated by the pledges so far - the goal is just in reach, and $5 still says 'Thanks'!

I don't even pretend to understand what Doc does.
But it is thanks to members on this forum that led to the purchase of duct tape LiFePO4 last year, which is doing great so far, but will need replacement some day. And that is when I expect work like this will help in making a good choice.

Put me in for $20.00 USD.

I'm currently assembling two 2,000W loads (five CC-400's each) for other clients but as soon as they're done, I can get your unit assembled, burned-in, tested and out to you. Perhaps by next weekend but most likely early the following week. I'm sorry Doc, I know the wait will be tough. :( :(

Doc, you deserve this, thank YOU!

I don't think we should let you shut it down just yet though (and cut into Doc's electric car fund  ). I let Doc know he missed slayer's post so we'll add that in, liveforphysics let us know how much to put you down for on top of that LiCo (I am guessing <grin>) care package you are sending.

If there is anyone else who wants in, now is the time...

Put me down for $40. I was planning to send him some giant resistors just for battery testing (along with some wicked LiPo cells), but I think with this sweet testing setup, he wont need the resistors.

I'm looking forward to seeing LiPo discharge graphs overlapped with LiFePO4 cells at high currents :)

JD, thanks for all this, Let me please pay my part of that tool!

Thanks Slayer and Liveforphysics and Markcycles too!!!

Now, let give Camlight enough time to build units

I'll do my work and prior read the entire online user manual

My CBA is now 100% fully operational and have the best mosfet upgrade availlable (thanks Camlight!) and is ready to meet this new companion !.... for the coming HIGH AMP TESTS !

I keep some wire size AWG 0, 1, 4 and 6 for that
