Quite an interesting read: https://ec.europa.eu/jrc/sites/jrcsh/files/eric-darcy-nasa-lessons-learned-passive-thermal-runaway-propagation-resistant-designs-spacecraft-batteries.pdf

That's awesome and their ideal design they worked out really validates Tesla's choice of spacing the cells so far apart like they do.

Also, i didn't know that the Samsung 35E was the current energy density winner. 273whrs/kg is pretty impressive.

Also, notice they operate the batteries at less than 1C. The opposite of what ebikers do  that's also a safety feature, a longevity factor, and an efficiency factor all in one. I wish more people would listen to NASA. :)

If useful, some other NASA battery stuff posted here over the years:

Well this is pretty cool!

Im wondering if there's a benefit to some type of material between each cell to prevent propogation to other cells if one fails...like super thick 5 layer aluminum foil between each cell and cell holder....
It's quite surpring though that they haven't tapped Tesla yet...shoot the people at what's inside on YouTube took an ax to Tesla cells and the only thing they did was sizzle....no fire or nothing. I believe Tesla is working on battery formulas to increase range but also increase safety...the holy grail of any battery essentially

First link not working. Otherwise: thanks a lot!
My favorites are the many pics they put in which clearly show what happens in case of failure. Always impressive and a good reminder of safety measures.
