(This post was for my website but I cant get the login up)

Problem Statement:
Hybrid and EV cars wont come out of gear in the event of system failure. With a standard transmission gasser you can throw it into neutral and get a car out of a tight spot. With an automatic they have an override, put er into neutral.

With something like a 1st Gen Prius... or an 04 Prius... or many of the EV's on the maket...
No dice

So (enter 4 pages here) Towing is NOT A SOLUTION to EV's which have run flat someplace where there is no charger.
(Jumping ahead)

I have towed 2pcs Prius
The first was a 1st gen, maybe 2nd gen.
It was stuck in a steep driveway in Washington
Good guy named Doug sent me on an exercise to get this vehicle off the property with nothing but a tow dolly.

Kimberly and I got the vehicle off the property but it took us the better half of a day and we were sore and sunburnt

Fast forward....
Yesterday I left an 04 Prius in down town Campbell. Parked parallel to the street, other cars in front of and behind it. The Vehicle was "locked up" - fubar - plumes of white smoke had billowed from under the hood and the transmission (by my tries) would not go into Netural

... (2 pages) Turns out this is a real bitch for tow companies
Blah blah... you have to use slipper plates under the wheels... do a bunch of shit... as you cant go dragging a car on a single steel cable in a highly populated area. Causes too much ruckus, to much perceived risk etc. If the vehicle in front of your vehicle can not be moved... it is a real problem getting the car on the truck

I.E.
If you have an EV
And you are enjoying down town campbell
And your kid runs the battery flat sitting in the car with the AC blowing...

... A day and a half of Schindler Engineering time + an Uber Ride + 3 more trips over the hill prove this. In the past 24hrs ...

* Lost half a day ENG hours yesterday
* Lost half a day CPA hours + half a day ENG hrs today
* Paid an Uber trip
* Blew out a bunch of AAA tow miles

...

Trust me
I am a trucking expert in this particular subject right now (will expand later)

TO MY POINT

The only CURRENT solution to a dead EV is a Tow
I have proven, on multiple occasions, that this is NOT A SOLUTION

... Yesterday the Tow company (AAA - who failed Schindler Engineering MISERABLY) told me that they could not get me a tow at 2PM in the middle of the bay area. They told me to wait SIX HOURS until a truck was ready

Schindler is going to wait 6hrs in Campbell until your local truck is ready.... since you shaved all your services down to the bone to maximize profits and ... now I am going to pay that price?

Anyway (pissed - I am going to light up AAA big time on this... but that will be later)

Anyway :)

What we are going to need for EV's is the following

* Truck, Van, or other heavy duty vehicle
* 100KWH of onboard lithium
* Means to trickle charge onboard lithium - so special alternator likely, otherwise onboard generator
* NO - WE WONT BE ABLE TO JUST SLOW CHARGE IT THE NIGHT BEFORE>>>>> WE ARE JUMPING EV's ALL DAY

On that note... Saw no less than 40 Tesla's on the road today. FU Oil and GAS!!!!

* Means to convert this 100KW onboard DC power to voltage match the vehicle which needs a jump.
* A jump shall be some nominal amount - 10KWh? ...
* A jump shall happen in no longer than it took to move my Prius out of the main drag in Campbell
* A jump shall not come in the form of J1772 (Obviously)
* A jump shall come in the form of CCS1, CHAdeMO, Tesla, and TBD-OTHER Possibly 480VAC

A jump will be a "common occurrence"
A jump will be no different than booking an Uber Ride

This service will not be offered by Uncle Sam, Uncle AAA, or Uncle Fester. This service will be offered by Amazon, Google, Uber, or the first pack of girls with the balls to do it.

You ... are... going to need to partner with a Charge Company
Do not waste your time trying to finger out all these charge protocols and all this shit... Super complicated.

ChargePoint is who I would partner with - only because I know they could do it in a snap. Guy named Scott, if presented a viable business plan, would slam you into shape

I have not worked for "other company" so I can not say if "Other company" can handle the job.

I can say that company named ChargePoint could handle the job - proof being that I hammered their ish for 2 years as a Sr Test Engineer and their ish works.

Why a battery pack and not a huge generator?

Throw a DC fast charger on the back of a flat bed
Throw a 480V 3-phase generator on the back of the truck

So...
We are looking at pushing 10KWh quick...

So...
10Kw charge means an hour
20Kw means half an hour
40Kw means 15 min... getting there

So we are looking at a 50KW DC fast charge minimum
It has to run CCS1 and CHAdeMO for starters

After efficiency.... and fudging a bit... 60KW generator

Looks like these generators are only $20K bucks eh?
No doubt you can get any head on them... 120V, 240V, 480V... right?

No doubt you can tune charge profiles to be "Generator Friendly" - so running power with no regard to starting power

Forget the onboard battery and inverter...

Forget the fussy-butt's in non-reality who are appauled by the thought of running a generator to quick charge an EV. There is nothing more natural and wholesome than quick charging a stuck EV with a 60KW generator on the back of a truck

I dont know... $20k sure shoudl be able to get you something? Adding in all the charge support, divide by two, carry the remainder... say... $35k shoudl do it

So you are in for the truck - any truck will do - call it $20k
You are in for a $20k generator
You are in for a $35k charge solution
Now... To system integrate that... sigh... you are going to be looking at a PRETTY BIG BILL

You could do it in the Burning Man parking Lot... but what we are looking for here is DOT approval and shit like that.... so...

You just do it. You explain the alternatives to the cops.

We have generators on trucks all the time in farming. Standard.

I ride your jump bikes on the rail road tracks so as to not DIE in traffic. 2 people have already been killed this year on my route and I am not super stoked on that. Start working on suspension bikes. Suspension makes bikes much more safe

BUT.. most of the “professional” tow companies in my town dont use single cable hoists, they have tow/lift trucks with a hydraulic arm that lifts a stranded car by the drive wheels using a adjustable “wheel support” mechanism.
I guess they realise there are cars with busted transmissions or seized brakes to remove ?
Imagine a fork truck , but with “forks that only touch the wheel rubber.
They then secure the wheels to the lift rig,.. and tow away.
I have seen then recover stranded or illegally parked cars from lines of nose/tail parked vehicles...no problem.

2013 Nissan Leaf S, no neutral just park, forward and reverse. I don't even carry my trickle charger have it in the storage somewhere. Ran 40amps to driveway enclosure, level 2 7kw charger in car. I watched videos of tow trucks trying to move dead Leafs in the middle of the road, not tucked in-between two cars. Have no idea how I would jump it out side of trickle charge.

Just trying to open this page on ES automatically opens that image in the same tab, without being able to view the ES page first (or at all).

I had to force stop loading the page with the ESC key, then specifically exclude the ability of the browser to do anything with stuff from "images.app.goo.gl" so I could actually see the ES page itself. :shock:

FWIW, I have scripts and stuff "whitelisted", so only places I specifically enable can even run scripts (which doesn't include anything from google in any URL form)...so I wonder how it managed to do this?

I didn't say the link didn't work. ;)

Only that the ES page itself couldn't be viewed because the browser automatically went to that link, without me clicking on it, until I specifically disabled anything from the linked site completely.

I don't know why it did that, as it doesn't normally just open anything on a page (I actually have it very restricted in what it can do unless I specifically allow it to), but I expect it is something about that specific site. If I had somewhere else I could post a link to that site, and test loading the page with the link I'd do that, cuz I've actually had this kind of thing happen at least once before, maybe twice, here on ES, where a link on the page loads, instead of the ES page itself. I don't recall where those links pointed to....
