It took Silicon Valley to motivate the lazy, stupid car industry enough to do it. That's no real surprise, considering that cars are the transportation choice of lazy, stupid people the world over. So we have an industry that can't be bothered to do the right thing, serving a market of buyers who can't be bothered to do the right thing.
For what it's worth, I'm guessing that the Model 3 is going to be a way more desirable car to drive. Those who can afford it will probably prefer it to the Bolt.
Fortunately for us, self-driving taxis will soon be the primary focus of automotive development, and values like durability, comfort, safety, and lifetime costs will outweigh desirability and excitement in car design. We don't need to excite drivers. People die needlessly when drivers become excited.
