hello es members! i need some help finalising the parts for my build, i was looking at the tc80 kit from ebikes.ca but there 72v controller only does 40amps max, i was thinking about running this then upgrading the controller to an adaptto at a later date when funds permit, can those infinion controllers be modified?, i know lyen sells controllers on here and im not quite sure the difference, they are both infinion based controllers, the ebikes controllers seem to have nicer wiring connectors and state they are not programmable, whilst the lyen controllers seem to be rated at higher amperage and are programmable.

would it be wise for me to get a tc80 kit from ebikes.ca or just grab the motor from them and a controller from lyen to get me up and running for the mean time until i get the adaptto, i want the smallest controller possible but obviously that doesn't go hand in hand with high power output.

the reason i was looking at the crown is due to the fact i can squeeze a cassette onto the crown and make it fit whereas the cromotor would require a single speed and im not sure if i want to go down that route especially due to the single front chain ring on the bike (giant glory 1) , but i am scared the crown will be crap compared to the cromotor and they weight basicly the same , there is alot of positive feedback on the cromotor and not much info on the crown especially at higher voltages where some seem to have found issues with them.

battery setup will be 72v 2x Turnigy nano-tech A-SPEC 5000mah 10S 65~130C in a camelbak, i may run another pair unconnected as a reserve. any ideas would be greatly appreciated, i am trying to build more of a trail weapon that will keep up with my mates stealth bomber than a commuter , something very similar to this, which gave me some good ideas http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=48207&start=75#p831410
but i want something with a little bit more gusto than a 3kw setup. i will use drbass torque arms if i can attain a set or i will have some machined up locally, regarding milage i would be happy with anything over 10miles on flat ground but am open to ideas on extending range whilst keeping weight as low as possible,

any ideas would be much appreciated! thanks :D

if I wanted such a beast, this is what I'd buy.

The Cromotor is a road racer. Its too fast and light to be good off road. The TC80 isn't a bad choice off road, it's a good solid motor but it has it's flaws.

The crown isn't a match for the 5404 used on the Bomber, but it's about the best available. You'll have to push the motor hard to get the same level of performance as the 5404 on the bomber. Its a heavy beast that reaches saturation at lower voltages and uses a special spoke that isn't something your local bike shop will stock, so wheel building and repair will be a challenge. Another option would be to run a HS4065 with cooling mods and higher voltage.

As for the battery, it would be best to run all the cells at the same time. that way they share the load and suffer less voltage sag and degradation through use. they'll also stay balanced better.

wesnewell thanks for the link but that controller is huge and there is no information listed about the motor it looks to be a cromotor clone?, im looking to go down a road of something a little more proven and perhaps solid, but i know nothing about that motor it may be fantastic. i would like the most reliable build possible. maybe you have some more info on that kit? i cannot find any build threads of someone having used that setup

drunkskunk thanks for the info re the cro, i thought the bomber used the 5403? http://www.crystalyte.com/xlyteupgrade.htm. not that it matters much as i cannot purchase one, has anyone tried to buy another from stealth for a replacement i wonder, maybe i will ask the dealer in my state :)

i was looking at this guys build and videos and it made the cromotor seem very appealing...

i knew the crown was not as good as the old 5xxx series motors which i believe are discontinued, is stealth having these custom made for them or have they just stockpiled them i wonder. how would a hs4065 perform at higher voltage vs a crown, im happy to take something with less thermal mass and keep my eyes on the motor temp. less weight is defiantly appealing, also is the 4065 still in production as im having trouble finding stock of it also! any thoughts on controllers for this project?

Cheers!

Though not up to 4-5kw continuous, Oatnet was selling a 5305 crystalyte on the for sale used board.

Perfect for slower (than 40 mph) riding up hills at 3000w continous. Ought to be plenty. Run it on 72v 40 amps. or maybe 50 amps. You could start with a cheapo ebay 72v 40amps.

It would have been bought in two seconds if I had any cash at all.

Not same as a 5400, but a damn robust motor, and in the slower wind, perfect for off road.

3000W hub motor thread.

The 5305 is still there, http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=25732

wes i read that thread but that 3000watt hub motor seems to have all kinds of issues and the re-sellers seem to be using cromotor pics in their ads! if what your are seeing in photos is not what your getting you are essentially ordering blind, reading that thread, zombiess seems to have had issues with his motor to the point of it sounding like a real gamble, small phase wires, dodgy magnets etc, not a path i would like to take i dont think. it also seems that motor has a higher kv than the cromotor so would be more suited to higher speeds?

dogman that 5305 sounds very temping but i am not sure it will have the speed required, alot of riding i do is in open fields rather than tight trails, so i am prepared to sacrifice some torque for top end if required, however i am not sure how this motor performs if you feed it 100v or more? i was watching this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjH_gJpu-JI this is more the style of riding i would be doing, i would like to retain a little bit of speed so the bike can still be used for small commutes( to the shops etc) and for longer trails, he is using a hs3540, but i believe he has now gone to a cromotor. the performance of that seems fantastic, but i don't really want to go to a 20" wheel for geometry and aesthetics reasons  .

so i am still at
second hand 5305 which would be a torque monster, but heavy and relatively slow top speed due to the winding?
Crown motor laced to a crystalyte rim. still a relative unknown?
a cromotor from greyborgusa laced in a 24 or 26" seems like a perfect motor for my use especially after watching this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSbb1MyRX8A if i could get that kind of performance i would be more than happy so i really should have said what hub+ controller for 4-5kw+ . but at 24s and high amps i would need a rather large controller like the 24fet lyen he is running another reason the cro+adaptto seems like a good combo
hs3540 seems to light duty even vented and not enough thermal mass?
hs4065 i cannot find for sale ? hyena seems to have had luck with these motors i will send him an email

He has indeed :p
I've got a few H4065s, H4080s crowns headed my way now. They're prefitted with good quality bearings, halls and a NTC10k thermistors for plug and play use with CAV3s so you can safely shove big power into them. The kits are running matching 18 fet 4110 controllers @ 60A or more at your own risk. Good for 4-5kw out of the box.
Shoot me a PM or better still keep an eye on my facebook page and I'll post updates when the stock arrives.

edit: I've also got a brand new 5403 (bomber motor) laced to a fat 3" rim with a fat 3" cruiser tyre fitted (imported from the US). I was going to use this for a high powered cruiser project but never got around to it so I'm happy to part with that if needs be.

Hi, I am thinking to upgrade my DH ebike also (at this time Magic Pie 2 motor, Kelly 35A max. 100A controller and 72V 15Ah LiFePo4 battery - discharge current 3C, max 5C only :( ).
Thinking about Crown TC80, bigger controller and Headway 40152S 15Ah LiFePo4 or some LiPo Turnigy battery with higher C!
But what do you say to try some 2400W Cyclone middrive kit?

Lighter solution than hub motor and maybe better for off road ride?? But maintenance more exacting?
