New 24" rim and spokes for HS3540

Hello ES,

I recently bought rear HS3540 spoked to a narrow Crystalyte 24" rim, but I am not too happy of it. I took the wheel to a local bike shop, but they were not able to source new 12G spokes for it, or they would have been ridiculosly expensive. Can anyone help me find a new 24" 36h DH wheel and correct size spokes for it? Preferrably EU area. I really have no experience whatsoever of wheel building.

I have a BigHit project underway, but the project is badly stalled because of this annoyance. I wish I get my bike running this season.

Hi, I would suggest 12g spokes are not the right choice, the rim wont be strong enough to get them tensioned enough and you will have a troublesome wheel that suffers with loosening spokes followed by broken ones. !3g or even 14g would be a better choice. Graham at Tiller cycles in the uk is a very good source of spokes.
 
calculate the spoke length that rim it should say erd ,effective rim diameter on it some place i think it should go radial mounting to
 
ive always gone with 14 ga or 2.0 mm spoke with my 3540 and now my cromotor plus im at 250 lbs .with my cromotor bike alone at 80 lbs with the skinny tires and 98 lbs with the fat tires and bigger battery pack ,the wheels have been fine both on 26 in wheels. go with it youll be fine

Better to avoid radial lacing due to the torque from the hub motor and the disc brake. Also need to prevent the spokes to be crooked, otherwise there can be many problems (as I had).
You can try 0-cross with paired hole spacing, as shown in the calculator here:

For paired holes you need to drill new spoke holes the hub flange. The other option is to drill the spoke holes on the rim in angle, so that the spokes are not crooked with 1-cross pattern. I guess the crystalyte rim is drilled so. With this motor and rim size combination you definitely have to drill one of these for a good wheel.

The Spoke Length Calculator http://www.ebikes.ca/tools/spoke-calc.html calculates 138mm long spokes for the rim and your hub motor at 1cross lacing.

I used a 1cross lacing and the wheel is pretty strong with my MXUS 1307 (like 9Continent 2807).
