I tried this today and it works and could easily be scaled up.
1 x 55watt 12v nominal solar panel, open circuit 21v.
1 x 24v to 12v switch mode voltage reducer, my charger has a maximum 18v input. If you have a charger with higher input specs you won't need this.
1x icharger 1010B+

I set the charge for 0.1 amps so as not to overload the panel. A larger array would allow higher charge rate.
When a shadow fell across the panel the charger shut down and needed a manual restart so not very practical on a cloudy day. A second battery to iron out the clouds would be better or possibly hacking the charger to auto start.
The panel is one of those semi flexible jobs so not very heavy and several could be carried with you on a long trip for charging in the bush.

Cool idea. Others may also take a look at this solar charging bike. Not balancing, but looks like it's working well. http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=62700&hilit=solar+trike

The lighter panels at a somewhat reasonable price are making all the difference.
