2017 Giant Glory 1 with BBSHD

Post by AmpedDH » Aug 18 2017 9:40pm

I'm about to pull the trigger on a new build using a new 2017 Giant Glory 1 and fitting a BBSHD with Shark Pack under the down tube. It's all a little experimental as I have not found a BBSHD on a Glory anywhere and I this is my first build. I have seen BBSHDs go a Stance, Trance, Reign, and Anthem - not sure why anyone has not done a Glory...

I've selected the Glory because with a BBSHD everything will seem like downhill and fast - precisely what the Glory is build for.

If anyone knows why I shouldn't attempt this build, please speak up now (PLEASE!).

Many thanks Amped Downhill.

Will you need a bottom bracket adapter in order to install the BBSHD's square taper arrangement?
Yuba Mundo w/BBSHD
Specialized Hard Rock w/9c clone, statoraid, hubsink
Trek Fuel 90 w/BBSHD
Above all run on 14s4p 52v li-ion
Ecobike folder 36v
Currie Flyer scooter 24v on 24ah of SLA

Every trip made with electric bike is one less car trip, saves money, no toxic fumes, less noise, less impact on roads.

Did you check that there's enough space in the triangle to fit the shark pack? You need extra space to get the battery in and out of its holder so that you can install it. I don't see enough space unless you have an extra large frame. I have a Giant NRS that has a relatively large triangle, but the shark pack doesn't fit. Mine is the same as this:

Have you done a mock up of that battery, put it on the frame and gone over some drops to simulate fork dive , to see if when the fork dives / goes through its travel , that it does not hit the battery ?
Also
With a heavy battery hanging underneath the downtube , you will want some very strong strapping to keep it on the bike.

It's 2018 already, lets get some real , improved e-bike / e-velomobile / e-motorcycle designs .

Gents, thanks for your steerage!

I did a little more design work and have decided to build my own battery pack as the Shark will not fit in the triangle and will only be problematic under the triangle in front of the down tube. I'm up for fabricating this and it allows me to go down the path of a non BMS pack so I can balance and custom monitor the batteries.

I've looked up the BB adaptor issue and I'll get (or make) an adaptor.

Considering fabricating a crash guard under the frame to add protection for the motor and may even add some batteries in it. Risky but lowers weight and there is plenty of room. Could be cool if I get the design right. I'm assuming that I can split batteries into various areas as stout cable will bridge the distance and allows me to stick batteries appropriate to the bike design.

Please keep the steerage coming!

Many thanks and regards.

I've had the bike finished now for 6 months. It's amazing! Everything I wanted - fast, reliable and very very powerful. I can go up anything with no worries. The only downside is the peddle assist being a little eager and for this reason it's a handful of twisty trails so I avoid them. Too often it has taken me round a corner too fast so I don't get a good line for the next corner and it's caused an off. On every other terrain it's just fine. I rode the Specialised Turbo Levo the other day and it's peddle assist is fantastic, it's torque assist so perfect for controlling your pace in the twisty stuff. Would I swap... nope - the power of the BBS HD on a Giant Glory is way too much fun to drop down from 1000watts to 550watts. If Brose motor comes out with 1000watts I'd swap instantly.

Very sweet bike! I was looking for a deal on a used Glory when I found a decent deal on my Kodiak. I would have loved to go with the BBSHD motor too but I am concerned that we will have issues riding on the streets in the EU with 1000w motor after we move there (since they are restricted to 250w max there). At least our 750w motor has the same casing as a 250w EU legal motor.

We are definitely jealous!

Do you have photos of your bike? To see the battery arrangement.

For single track is better to put pas0 and use throtle only

Hi was wondering if you could give some details of anything that needed to be done on this? I was looking at a 2008 glory 0 to put on a bbshd (will be my second build). First was an easy bolt on to an old cannondale of mine. Dont have much machining abilities and wondering if this is easy to pull off? I was really looking at putting the pack on the low side of the down tube. Did it not work for you/what did you end up doing? Any input you can provide would be appreciated.

Have you tried programming your BBSHD? I bought a kit for my Trek Dual Sport from Luna with the configuration pretty "opened up", but decided it was a little too "exciting" for me. So I toned it down some and it rides great for me now.

If you haven't tried programming it before, it's really a no-risk exercise. You can save your current configuration and then change anything and everything, from each PAS level (including ramp up/down) to throttle response. Also, the PAS progression does not need to linear, so the first few levels could be mild, followed by big steps in the next few. It's fun to play with.

Slipped in easy. Made a spacer vs using shims supplied (went to local aluminium supplier who sliced off a piece of pipe - free! Painted it black - see picture) easy install!
I'll post pic of battery in a few weeks when I get time.

Hi,

Can you send me more information and photos about this bike conversion?

I am going to do the same with my Giant Glory 00 2010 (Same frame model) and want to have as more information that I can, to start this new project.

Do you buy BBSHD 100mm for a 83mm Botom Bracket? Are you using special parts to adapt de electric motor?

Regards!

NO. It's NOT 250W MAX, it's 250W RATED at the rear wheel. Those are two completely different numbers. The EU law says nothing about MAX power, that's why those street legal Bosch and Yamaha drives output between 500-700W max. You could not master any mountain that fast with 250W max measured at the controller input.
