Learning About Connectors

I've started to accumulate a pile of E-Bike "stuff" including two new 250W controllers with female 9-pin connectors. I was a supporter of the UrbanX/UrbaNext KickStarter debacle and was provided them to "repair" what I later determined was a broken hall sensor. Among the things I've accumulated is a Workman tricycle with a 250W front hub motor. As best I can tell it is a 3 phase, 3 hall sensor motor. So the task is to marry up a controller with the hub motor.

Is there a "smart" way to find the male side of the connector, or do most just cut them out and splice in connector(s) appropriate for the circuit? I've seen on the site the recommendations for the power circuits, is there a general conscious on connectors for the control circuits?
