I already have a robust potted DC/DC that takes 36V-60V and converts that to 12V for ebike lights, radio, etc...(search ebay for "golf cart DC/DC").
I have wanted a variable input/output DC/DC converter for a while (for a variety of projects). The push right now for me is that the kCap uses 6V-8V DC input to run. It is possible to use two kCaps to use a common 12V power supply, but I am exploring several alternatives. I have the part number for buying a used 6V supply, and that may eventually prove to be the best option for the kCap.
I could buy a half dozen cheap step-down DC/DC's to try out, but I don't know what to look for. It's not really the cost (these are all pretty cheap), but I hate waiting a long time for delivery, just to find out I bought the wrong thing.
The three possible inputs are a 12V car battery, 18V cordless tool battery, or a 48V/52V ebike battery, so that's the input range. I want a useful device for several reasons (my NiCD radio uses 4.8V, kCap uses 6V-8V, etc). I know that the narrower the performance profile, and the lower the amps needed, the smaller and cheaper the converter. Since this will be more of a "work-bench power supply" I don't need small size or max efficiency. A digital readout for the output is a plus, and CC/CV is useful if available.
12V-24V input = good
12V-60V input = best
