E-Bike Expo rides on the Pier
By Marina Andalon
A traveling roadshow focusing on electric bikes will be hosting a weekend event on the Santa Monica Pier from Dec. 2 – 4.
Santa Monica has earned a reputation as a hub for the emerging e-bike industry. The motorized bicycles function like a traditional bike but can legally go up to 20 miles per hour in California. Several stores have opened on Main Street specializing in e-bikes and the weekend event builds on the existing momentum.
The Electric Bike Expo is a way to promote the electric bike industry in the U.S., the expo is touring all over the country and hitting various cities. The expo teaches people about the technology behind the e-bikes and allows them to test various brands.
California has jumped to the 8th most bike friendly state, assessed annually by the League of American Bicyclist and they designated Santa Monica as a bike friendly community.
“The state’s bike-friendly advocacy efforts have driven this region to become the base for so many electric bike manufacturing/distributors,” said Ray Verhelst, Director of the Electric Bike Association. “Santa Monica offers a perfect location during this holiday season to reach thousands of locals and tourist from around the globe.”
People are invited to join various cycling groups like Santa Monica Spoke, California Bicycle Coalition, Bosch, the Electric Bike Expo and the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition during this event and gather information and tips on safe riding.
“For Santa Monica, biking is in the cities DNA. Currently Santa Monica is one of only three communities in LA County ranked as Silver by the League of American Bicyclist. The city and community advocates are committed to reaching gold and beyond,” said Cynthia Rose, Director of Santa Monica Spoke, and Board Member of the California Bicycle Coalition
Santa Monica has achieved a 356% growth in biking and counting which seems to be the reason why Rose will lead a group ride. There will also be a presentation by the California Bicycle Coalition and the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition.
After the presentation attendees can learn more about the specific e-bike brands being represented at the expo, like Blix, BMW, Bulls, Raleigh, Yuba, and the latest electric drive systems from Bosch and plenty more. Many of these brands are new to the U.S. and are here to be tested out on the track.
Participants are asked to come at least a half an hour early so they can get you set up with the right bike. The test track is a fully fenced track with variety and terrain to that will enable you to get a feel for each bike. The terrain offers a hill like structure, straight away, and corners to help determine the perfect e-bike for the attendees.
Tempo Bicycles will be raffling off one of their Carmel or Santa Barbara hybrid electric bicycles worth $4,000 to a lucky winner. All proceeds from the raffle will go to the local bike advocacy group, Santa Monica Spoke.
“With the improved bike specific infrastructure that’s been rapidly put into place here in Santa Monica, and is now connected to the Expo Line, and you’ve got a recipe to create the kind of mode share for bicycling in Santa Monica we see in cities like Amsterdam and Copenhagen. Add electric bicycles to the mix and choosing a bike over a car for short trips becomes the easy and fun solution,” said Charlie Gandy, Vice Chair or the California Bicycle Coalition Board of Directors.
The Electric Bike Expo will be at the Santa Monica Pier parking lot. Hours are 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

good time to die! (in)

December 7, 2016 § 18 Comments
Because the Palos Verdes Estates City Council thinks that policing the Lunada Bay Boys on Mom’s Couch to the tune of $65,000 a year is more important than sticking up five lousy BMUFL signs, and because the Palos Verdes Estates City Council thinks that the best way to handle cycling deaths is to ignore them, there is going to be a special die-in on December 13 to ring in the holidays just the way that the council apparently wants: With lots of dead bodies.

Die-in location: Malaga Cove Plaza in Palos Verdes Estates, CA.
Die-in time: 4:00 PM to 4:45 PM.

Dead riders will show up with their bikes and create a “die-in” protest on the lawn in front of Malaga Cove from 4:00pm – 4:45 pm. Following this demonstration, corpses and protesters will meet inside Malaga Ranch Market for dinner and to brief everyone on the city council agenda items. The city council meeting starts at 7:30 PM. At the council meeting attendees will submit speaker cards and discuss agenda items so that the city council can see that we’re vitally interested in the workings of city government. Since the council has adopted a policy of putting “open public comment” at the end of the meeting, in conclusion attendees will also submit speaker cards to talk about the importance of bike safety and the immediate installation of BMUFL signage. The goal is to make the city council as interested in cyclists’ desire to stay alive as cyclists are interested in the council’s discussions of tree trimming and PVE being contaminated with yucky Torrance dirt (true item of past council discussion).

Informational banners, signs and flyers instructing on the three deaths in PV, the effectiveness of BMUFL signage, the effects of Lunada Bay /PVE localism in politics, and locations where collisions have occurred will all be part of the protest, along with graphic visual demonstrations and reenactments of cyclist/car collisions using live volunteers.
Everyone who shows up will get extra bloody tee-shirts to die in.
The city council meeting begins at 7:30 PM and will run for as long as people show up to speak. Hopefully the city council will continue to see that their policy of outwaiting, outlasting, and outsitting cyclists isn’t going to work. Cyclists want those five BMUFL signs and want them now.
If you’re curious about die-ins and how they work, here are some links to die-ins used in other places to bring attention to the casual killing of people on bicycles.

There will be free pizza at the city council meeting, although the council has now kicked hungry cycliss out of the city offices and required them to eat outside. If you’ve been promising yourself that you will show up and get involved, this is a great time to do it. The more corpses, the better.

Electric Bike Expo Chooses Long Beach to Kick Off National Tour

byAriana Gastelum  on February 16 2017 14:26 in Life

The Electric Bike Expo 2017 US tour begins in the parking lot of the Convention Center in Downtown Long Beach on February 24, where 140 different pedal-assisted or “eBike” models will be available for the public to test ride on a 25,000-square-foot loop track.

The Electric Bike Association hosts the travelling series of Electric Bike Expos across the country. Its mission is to serve and build a knowledge base among the retail community on how to reach the buying public and share best business practices to remain competitive and profitable.

The 2017 tour will start in Long Beach and continue to San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Chicago, Minneapolis, Portland, Miami and Philadelphia.

Charlie Gandy, former mobility coordinator for the City of Long Beach and Vice Chair of the California Bicycle Coalition rides next to Claudia Wasko, Leader of Bosch eBike Systems in North America.

EBike Expo Director Ray Verhelst was inspired to launch the upcoming tour in Long Beach after meeting Charlie Gandy, vice chair of the California Bicycle Coalition Board, and Melissa Balmer, host of Pedal Love, an advocacy organization that works to elevate the voice and impact of active, mindful mobility through storytelling tools, trainings and media outreach.

“After meeting both Charlie and Melissa during our first expo in San Diego, February of 2016, and hearing about Long Beach’s bike-friendliness and dynamic bike culture, I knew, not only would it be a great place to host an expo, but that I needed to recruit these two storytellers to our team,” Verhelst said in a statement. “We couldn’t be more delighted with the location and the assistance we’re getting locally to get the word out about the Expo.”

Long Beach City Council has been making recent progress in bikeway improvements. Separated bikeways and bollards are being installed throughout the city to safely allow cyclists to ride without being interrupted by traffic.

Dave Hanson, owner of Long Beach retailer Jax Bicycles, will be attending the event.

“We began carrying eBikes in 2002 and look forward to the Expo in Long Beach, not only to connect with new consumers, but to also learn more about new brands to the US market,” Hanson said in a statement. “No matter what kind of riding you want to do, there’s an eBike just right for you––whether you’re a casual bicyclist or have a daily commute. No longer are hills, wide intersections or distances a challenge.”

EBikes, which originated in the 1890s, were originally designed to assist people riding in different types of terrain or to carry large loads, according to Electric Bike Association. By 2010, 120 million electric bicycles were being used in China and 700,000 were sold in Europe.

In addition to terrain, large load and transportation assistance, Ebikes also help those riding for exercising purposes. In June 2016, the European Journal of Applied Physiology published a recent study from the University of Colorado Boulder, which proved that eBikes are an effective form of active transportation that can improve some cardiometabolic risk factors within only four weeks.

Electric Bike Expo is a free event and open to the public. To register online, visit the link here. For more information about Ebike Expo and the Electric Bike Association, visit its website here.https://electricbikeassociation.org/
The Long Beach Convention Center parking lot is located at 368 East Shoreline Drive.

The city’s fourth open streets event is taking over some neighborhoods around Cal State Long Beach this Saturday, offering attendees live music performances and activities for the entire family.
The public is invited to walk, bike, skate or roll along the vehicle-free roadways between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. for the Beach Streets University event, which will kick off in front of CSULB’s Walter Pyramid.
“Beach Streets is a terrific local event that brings our neighbors, businesses, and community groups together,” 5th District Councilwoman Stacy Mungo said in a statement. “We’re excited for this wonderful celebration full of outdoor activities, music, food, and family fun, to captivate the east side of town.”
Thousands came out for the city’s first three open streets events, held in downtown, uptown and midtown over the past two years. There was also a mini beach streets event last month during the 2017 Toyota Grand Prix, which took riders around the downtown race track.
Live performances by local bands include Knyght Ryder, Forest of Tongue, and Big Sun. Participants can also watch BMX Freestyle Team Demonstrations at the “Extreme Hub” while crusing the route near Spring Street and Palo Verde Avenue.
Whaley Park will be home to the “Kids Hub,” where children can engage in fun activities like decorating bikes and rock climbing. There will also be a public skate park at the “Extreme Hub,” where kids can take skateboard lessons.
The event route includes Atherton Street in front of CSULB, sections of Bellflower Boulevard and the Los Coyotes Diagonal, and Spring Street, between Bellflower Boulevard and Studebaker Road.
Acceptable modes of transportation are: bicycles, skates, rollerblades, skateboards and walking. The only motorized vehicles allowed are ones officially marked as a means for transportation for those with disabilities.
Bring your extra placard, should have received the new one by now so; one for the car, one for the ebike.
Parking is available for $7 at the Palo Verde entrance to the CSULB campus. For more information, including a schedule of activities at various “hubs,” visit www.beachstreets.com or email beachstreets@longbeach.gov.

Interbike talks up new show features, cans consumer day
Published June 21, 2017
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. (BRAIN) — Interbike has a number of new initiatives on tap for this year’s show, including a new crowd-funding area called The Incubator, and a New Product Showcase area.
Show organizers are also doing away with a dedicated consumer day. The show will now close at 2 p.m. PDT on Friday. The show traditionally closed at 4 p.m.
The Incubator will feature the latest cycling-related innovations from creators on crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter. It will be placed in a high-traffic location on the Interbike show floor where attendees can flow through, touch and feel the products and speak with the creators about their innovations.

“Just about every company in our industry started out as an idea at some point, and it grew from there,” said Justin Gottlieb, PR and communications director for Interbike. “Our goal with The Incubator is to get these products and their creators in front of our audience and hopefully help launch their products and brands. Brands like Revolights and Lumos, which were both Kickstarter products, have now gone to the next level and I’d like to think we played a part in those success stories. We want to do that for more creators and their products.”

Interbike is working with Kickstarter to promote the area to its creators, which will feature a simple, turnkey booth solution to make the investment economical.
The New Product Showcase area in the front of the hall will give companies the opportunity to showcase one new product innovation in the highest traffic area at the show. Exhibitors can use this area to drive attendees to their booths for more details and to see other products.

Interbike also announced that it is eliminating its Customer Appreciation (consumer-access) Day on the final day of the show, which was started three years ago and netted moderate attendance.
“We now realize that getting significant turnout to fly to Las Vegas during the week is extremely difficult and that we’re better served going back to the old format and making it a trade-only event,” said Pat Hus, vice president of Interbike. “If we can come up with another way to do it in our new home, we’ll re-visit the concept.”
Companies interested in The Incubator at Interbike should contact Andria Klinger at andria.klinger@interbike.com or (949) 226-5745 for more.

http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/Free-Open-Streets-Fest-in-Santa-Monica-447791553.html
If you've called upon Ocean Avenue or Main Street in Santa Monica on pretty much any Sunday, even the chillier/foggier ones, you know that a lot of people are out, hoping to go to brunch, looking to go to the beach, or planning on doing a bit of both.
Many of those people, and maybe even you, happen to be in their cars, and strolling along, Sunday-style, is an activity that belongs solely to the sidewalk.
Except when an open streets event comes along. That's when people looking to leg it for an hour, or ride a bike, or push a stroller, or walk the dog take to the middle of the road, and not just the pedestrian-only areas to the each side.
And there's a big open streets gathering coming up on Ocean Avenue, from Wilshire Boulevard to Tongva Park, and Main Street, from Colorado Avenue to Marine Street, on the first of October.
The two central thoroughfares of the festival are mighty close, distance-wise, so you can cycle both, if that's your goal, or you can just visit one end of the map and soak it the unusual sight of a bunch of non-car'd humans ruling the street.
The Colorado Esplanade, by the by, serves as the car-free connector between Ocean and Main.

The Sunday, Oct. 1 cycle-tacular is free to join, and the entertainment and art that'll pop up over the 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. schedule? That's a pay-nothing kind of situation, too. DJs, group karaoke, and collaborate drawing are just three of the many "look there!" moments due at the Oct. 1 event.

In the pay-something category, there's food, in the plentiful restaurants around the area and from food trucks, too. (And by "pay-something" we do mean pay the price on the menu, of course.)
And if your bike needs stowing? There's a free bike valet at Civic Auditorium, and bike repair, too, if some doohickey comes loose, due to all of your jubiliant, middle-of-the-road riding.
The City of Santa Monica is behind the sunbeam-laden, everyone-smile affair. How to get there? Two good recs: Expo Line and the Big Blue Bus.
And if you don't have a bike, you can check out a Breeze bike from a nearby station (there are 85 places to do so in the city, so yeah). Other bike renters'll be out, around Main and Ocean, so there are options.
Not biking is an option, too, so if you plan to be fully wheel-free, well, cool that. Stop on by either way and see a scene not often seen around the busy area come a bright Sunday afternoon.

eBikes please email to apply to race with your ebike specs.

Thanks for the update on this upcoming race MotorBicycleRacing, and the detail provided.

Question - are there awards given to ebikes?

The one time I went to this race the ebikes were allowed to run but ignored even when they won. Some ebike riders decided to never return. Clear policies should be indicated on how this works.

How do the classes work on ebikes? I see no detail there. Ebikes vary a lot in acceleration and top speed capability. What specific information regarding ebikes is to be provided? How is this handled?

Thanks for your reply.

I thought I was clear how it worked,
eBikes please email to apply to race with your ebike specs.

Alan Chinito Hu has been OKed to race his 11kw eMotorcycle with Moped tires in
our 200cc - 212cc Unlimited class.
A Stealth with bicycle tires has been OKed in race in our Midrange class.
Maybe another ebike there?

We are a gas motor event with no ebikes for a few races.
eBikes above are racing for Fun and will not or be scored or a get a trophy if they win or place.

eBikes like #62 David Twomeys juicer are what we like to see at the races.

Ryan Biffard won it overall on a 3kW ebike through out handing the rest, another ebike took 3rd? I think my own bike burned up a perm or agni.

Good information.

So ebikes can run but they are not considered to be competing in the race for recognition or prizes.

I still don't see a list of what "specs" are required about an ebike.

Thanks.

I have a funny old phone recording of the "motorbicycle" guy calling to try to badger and intimidate electric bikes and myself. That event myself and Farfle and I think PaulD swept the event for ebikes, then never raced again at another of his events after they heard this guy's insecure school yard bully style pointless phone harassment that suddenly all went silent standing face to face at the track.

Deathbike is in SoCal and available to any competent rider who can tell me in no more than two sentences that loaning it to them to ride in this race is a good idea.

Stevil won a race also, that's where I met him in person, and later he helped me build my CroBorg. He was very disappointed at the lack of recognition there and said he would not attend again. He's even farther away than I am from this SoCal event.

I didn't race in the one event I attended, it was a long, long drive from here so I haven't gone again.

There was also a local guy that had PaulD's race-winning bike there, but he had controller problems. I haven't heard from him in awhile, he went off to Engineering college and disappeared into the working masses.

I understand the prize donors wanting their prizes to go to the combustion bikes (many would have been inappropriate for ebikers anyway), but if the organizers want ebikes to attend they should at least acknowledge their standings and try to have appropriate classes one way or another for recognition. Perhaps even find some ebike related donors for ebike prizes. It looked like fun (I took and posted a huge number of photos of the event).

I recall Luke filling his motor with water, and Farfle overheated (perhaps burned) his. Stevil's Xlyte powered Borg seemed to survive. Somebody's girlfriend (Farfle?) did very well in a race also, perhaps won. But then to be totally ignored was a let-down and discouraged almost everyone from returning.

Yep, I remember that race too, it was a girl named Adian who raced Farfles race bike if I remember right, and she was very light body mass and very ballsy and skilled rider despite being high-school age, and I think she beat all the gas bikes and possibly myself as well (way too many races in the last decade to remember). I hope she is still racing, serious natural talent.

I like your honesty in this post Luke, and a solid offer.

Not the West coast, more like Aus but we have been knocked back heaps of times trying to enter the Joby powered bike in Gasser races and for dubious reasons.

One time we were allowed to run, had to begin in a postie bike and scooter class, then 250cc, then open category and the event director said he would let us do the final in open, but we had to pull off the track before the finish if in front cos they wanted photos of their guys and not us crossing the line first.
And that was after paying the full entry fee and we also had to forfeit prizes/trophies and appearing in official results, etc.
The rider was your usual capable and cocky motocross dude and won without pulling over, but we obviously jeopardized our chances of racing with that club again.

Apparently this is all very disruptive behavior, and its been interesting to see how those in the traditional motorsport world are attempting to deal with the rise of these problematic machines, i think this may be my favorite thing. :D

Johnny Cash Trail grand opening this SaturdayBy: Rachel Zirin, Reporter

Join the City of Folsom for the grand opening all-day celebration of the Johnny Cash Art Trail this Saturday, Oct. 14. The day-long event will be to celebrate the completion of the two-and-a-half-mile trail that honors one of the world’s most famous country musicians and his influence on Folsom.

Phase two of the trail includes 1.25 miles of Class I paved trail, an undercrossing that tunnels beneath Prison Road at Natoma Street, and a 190-foot wooden arched bridge that will provide views of the American River Canyon, Lake Natoma and beyond.

“January 13, 2018 will be the 50th anniversary of Johnny Cash’s performances at the prison,” said Robert Goss, director of the Folsom Parks and Recreation Department. “The album that came from those concerts, Folsom Prison Blues, is why Folsom is known around the world. When you make the investment in a $7.5 million public infrastructure, it’s time to celebrate.”

And celebrate is what the City of Folsom plans to do.

Festivities include a ribbon-cutting and grand opening ceremony, followed by a 4.2- and 6.2-mile timed run; a community bike ride that starts on the trail; and an outdoor festival in Folsom City Lions Park. That same evening, the new bridge will provide the unique setting for “Out Among the Stars” – an exclusive outdoor dining experience featuring a menu created by Michelin star Chef de Cuisine Duncan Holmes with support from Karen’s Bakery Café.

Goss said he looking forward to number of things during the day-long celebration.

“On behalf of the community, what I am most proud of is making some of the city’s most beautiful spaces accessible to the public,” Goss said. “Phase two goes through some beautiful territory. It hasn’t been see by very many people. The public doesn’t know the treat they are in for.”

The Johnny Cash Art Trail will set the stage for a world-class public art experience to celebrate and honor one of the world’s most famous country musicians and his influence on Folsom. The project includes eight larger-than-life public art pieces and a three-acre park honoring the man in black.

A Johnny Cash Trail Art Experience fundraising effort is underway, and the Folsom Arts Association is accepting contributions in order to complete the park and art installations.

All of the Oct. 14 events will benefit the Art Experience, with proceeds earmarked for “Cash’s Pick” – two seven-foot-tall bronze guitar picks that will anchor each end of the Johnny Cash Trail.

Only makes sense to me that a race called DeathRace should have a DeathBike entrant. This even simply needs more coverage via go pros and possibly a drone, once uploaded to Youtube, you have single handedly accelerated the transition to sustainable transportation.

Only makes sense me... .

Do you sir find yourself in a surplus of blood and intact skin and whole bones and unseperated joints?

Im currently enjoying recovery from exactly the right amount of spinal injury after the right amount of weeks immobilized in pain, and feel incredibly grateful to still be able to lift my feet on the pegs again to ride and walk, but the bike just needs its battery mounted and it's rideable.

Also, if my gear fits you and you don't mind that my leathers are skidded up a bit and Kevlar and D3O body armor hoody you can wear over it for additional protection.

I'm too tall for them, they are made perfect for 6ft, I have them only because of crashing in them borrowed from a friend who is 6ft. Ride motocross or superbikes or race supermoto?
