Pikes Peak Bicycle Ride Aug 29, 2010 (Sunday)

No mention of ebikes, entry fee is rather steep, I actually hiked up that mountain with a snowboard. Road was closed in the winter so hiking was the only way up. My friend did it with skies, tougher hike with ski boots on. I was out of breath when I got to the top so the ride down wasn't as enjoyable. Still cool to be able to say I did it. It took all morning to climb just to get one run down.

Would somebody be able to predict the watt hours needed to do this climb?

I have a 36v 20 ah set up on a BMC motor and am thinking about climbing this hill!

Thanks, Josh K.

That wont be enough unless the weight is reeeal low; However I am in Colo springs and have a 48v 20ah headway screw top you can borrow. might even be part of you pit crew.

email me

PS: I ALSO HAVE A SINCLAIR C5 TO LOAN FOR YOUR SHOW

Hey, well, thanks for the offer, I may just have to take you up on that!

Well, We now Know, Optibike, Pete's electric bikes, Small Planet E vehicles, and RunAbout Cycles will be at this event.

Should be fun, for sure. Anybody else want to come and climb with us?

I would love to see the Sinclair, but not sure that we would show it, as we are trying to show handbuilt bikes from Fort Collins.
But, I would love to check it out, and possibly show it at our shop for a while. I would like to study it a little bit, as we are
interested in possibly doing a velomobile soon.

Thanks, looking forward to seeing you again. We met at Barona a couple of years back, Right?

Peace, Josh K.

Yes we met at Barona. I wont be entering in the Pikes Peak race, unless they have a "Senior Clydesdale Handicap" class. (Some Big Ironman TriAthalon events do). But being local, there are ways i hope I can be of help to the Ebike community.

I do think a young lightweight power rider would have a good time with my 360w 24v20ah cyclone RALEIGH GRUV.

Al Brody is the local senior cycling jock here, I think he might be riding either an Optibike or a DAY 6 up the Mtn.

stay in touch.

just for the climb-

7700 foot rise averaging 6.7% for 20.5 miles?

180 lb rider 75 lb bike?

628 watts for 74 minutes to average 15mph

do all your pedalling at the bottom, you wont be much help above 12,000 feet unless a good athlete.
Above 12,000, thankfully for the e-motor, the air gets cooler .
with the rider contributing enough to make up for efficiency losses? 1.25 hours at 628 watts looks like ~.8 kwh just for the climb?
(dropping the rider weight to 130 lbs drops motor wattage over 100 watts. Know any good horse jockeys or female bike riders)

So what size pack ... considering pedal input ???

At these numbers, at least 750wh, a good ah meter, maybe a heart rate meter, A thermometer on the motor, and no LVC's

This is about getting to the top, not about your time.

You will be ~14,000 feet for the summit, your thinking wont be the clearest, and your ability to help pedaling ... not very much.

If you run out of battery before the summit, put it in granny, pedal 100 feet, rest , pedal, rest, pedal. If it was me, I would disconnect the LVC's, and push the pack to near zero volts just to finish. Then sell the pack

d

Or pack a bigger pack(1200W?).... eventually you could have a pack that required no pedaling. Pack size is unlimited

http://www.ultimatemotorcycling.com/2010/pikes-peak-electrocat-motorcycle-sets-record

but when is it not a bicycle ?? ..... no pedals

WE also have a great FREE mountain music festival that weekend, walking distance to event start.

Book lodging early, big weekend its peak season. Some $55 dollar rooms still available. some limited camping.

**Error **Total 9150 rise in altitude; ** looks like a full 1KWH of battery pack?

**total elevation gain for the event is 7700 feet.

Depending on the pedal input. Like if Lance was pedaling

If it was elec. motor alone at 15mph ave. ... how many watt hours ??

Snow, rain/ hail on the peak yesterday. Can see the snow on Pikes Peak from almost anyhwere in the Springs.

Bring everything from tights to rain jacket.

We hope for a nice day, odds are 55F at the base at 8am, decreasing to 45F at the summit.

Spent several hours over at the event start area (Manitou Memorial Park by Manitou town hall)

There is about 30 live outlets scatered; the Parks supervisor says they are always live, and will be for our event.

There is a Non profit bike shop behind the park, his shop will be open Saturday before the hill climb, and will be open at 6am Sunday; he has tools, parts and outlets. He is supportive of e-bikes... he sent me home with one to fix.

The climb out of the park to the Toll gate is ... relentless. then the hill climb.

But it will be enjoyable, A NICE TOWN THAT WANTS THIS EVENT.

Wrote to eco-speed .... they are putting it out to their owners/members

Hey, thanks for the great info.

Yes, I think we will have 6 E bikes climbing the hill...

Runabout Cycles will climb with the Cargo Cruiser, with 1200 watt hours of go go juice.
John Bidwell is bringing a mountain climber, with 2 kw, and E tek equiped...
Chuck from Pete's is riding a Kalkahf.
Steve for small planet will be riding a I zip.
and Jim and Kyle from Optibike will be riding 850R bikes up as well.

Should be a good event, for Sure.

Still got to hook up my amp meter, but am almost ready to go now.

Peace, Josh K.

I think this will be really interesting in regards to hub motor to front drive type gear. I hope we end up with some good stats from race. Oh coarse, I hate to say it but I think the cyclone setups and opti's are going to put the beatdown to anything else. Just my opinion but the best thing is hopefully this type of race will end that type of discussion.

We expect Optibike to do well, but you never know till the race is done...

The E tek equiped mountain bike will most likely get to the top first, with 2kw.

But, then we start to get into, is it a E bike again...

Perhaps we will have some limits at some point.

I will try to get everyone to share stats, the best we can.

Peace, Josh K.

good luck big guy.

everyone who has the time to visit boulder should enter the guessing contest jim set up on the optibike website.

closest guess on the optibike time to the top gets you a free trip to the boulder plant and an opti ride in the woods, indian peak wilderness area west of where josh is in ft collins. did i say free?

RUMORED Reports from Pikes Peak base:
(I spoke with several dozen riders at the event end point)

Optibikes were the first Ebikes to the summit and down to the bottom

Peter also completed the event summit to bottom

at least One ebike for sure did not make the Summit

Two ebikes status (including Joshua) unknown but I did see him at the event

Human powered:

Two Cat 1 RACERS MADE THE SUMMIT IN UNDER 2:20

A few minority of human powered entrants were in a snit over the ebikes (the ebikes had better times than them and they are very competitive riders) and wanted to ENSURE the ebikes were a separate category.

Vast majority of riders saw the ebikes and did not give a hoot about anybody or anything other than their own ride.

At least one accident and one high altitude sickness problem

About 15% of riders attempting the summit did not make it due to exhaustion
I spoke with several of them, they were not prepared for oxygen deprivations impact on their head.

Many wore everything they could find on the way down for the first 10 miles.

A few riders were stopped for excessive speed coming down.

A few riders WALKED their bikes the last mile to the summit (I presume mechanical failure?)
Majority of riders just wanted to make the summit. Some riders entered to ride as far as they could, hoped to "make it further next year".

It is very much hoped by almost all riders to do/try this again next year.

Sponsors and city happy with turn out. The one sponsor Rep I spoke with had no issue with the ebikes.

local story, but no mention of ebikes,
