E-Bike Expo, Portland May 20-22

I went Sunday and it was fun to ride so many bikes in the two hours I was there. My favorite rides were on:

"Big Bud":

the E-stream EVO-FS-3-29:

and the Panther PS1:

Sorry to have missed some (most, all) of you that attended. Myself and a friend went on Saturday, where we spent 4 hours talking to vendors and trying out several ebikes. I was surprised by the sheer number of models of ebikes there and that were available to test. I honestly can't say I was disappointed by any one bike or that I had a true favorite, as I am so prejudiced by my firm conviction (of 3 decades) in believing that human/assist bikes were going to come to fruition someday as a viable transportation option. And here they are! So in my case, riding all the different bikes was truly a pleasure. :D

I was happily surprised at the amount of uumph I felt with the 250 watt motors, thinking that they would be totally anemic ( according to a lot of the conversation here on the Sphere). Many of the vendors touted their motors as being 350 watts, but neglected to mention that was peak power, not the continuous power of 250 in which they were actually "rated at". But still, plenty of assist for getting from here to there under most circumstances and certainly more than enough to work well within the 20 mph speed limits we are "supposed to" adhere to here in Oregon. I was also pleased with the onboard electronic displays and controls that abound on all the bikes now. Very impressive! Clear and concise displays and very simple easy to use control buttons for selecting options of assist and power (lighting controls too!).

I would say that my only disappointment would be that I didn't get to catch up with you etrike and suncoaster (and any other ES'ers) at the event. Bummer. What is the next event for local Sphere types to get together for? The one in July at Pioneer Square sponsored by the Oregon Electric Vehicle Association?

Cheers,

Tomas
