BBSHD powers up, doesn't run; no error code

BBSHD powers up. No error code. But doesn't run. The speedometer works, the battery meter works. I opened up the controller cover, with wires dangling. It ran. I put it back together, and it ran for 6 minutes to the store. But on the way home would not run, though again it did power up. Ideas? Plenty of power in the battery.

I opened up the controller. Found broken insulation on the phase wires and melted anderson connectors. I repaired these, put it on the bike, it ran unloaded. Turned it off, neatened and tightened. Now, again, it powers up, no error codes but doesn't run. Any ideas?

Considering an external controller as this will be the third burned controller. Suggestions for pug and play ease?
